4. What’s next for Chip Kelly?"

An interesting news nugget came up when calling around about SEC jobs this week. He appears unlikely to end up at an SEC school. People who know Kelly say the SEC would be an awkward fit, as he prefers anonymity outside the football facility.
The Ducks killed it when Chip was there, but the program was second banana to XC/Track as far as history and institutional prestige are concerned. Hard to be the mad scientist behind the scenes in Lincoln.

Its UCLA or Nebraska. If he brings UCLA to where he brought Oregon. He'll be a celebrity which he would hate. At Nebraska he can have Bill Moos do a lot of the hob nobbing for him and its much easier to fly under the radar in a house out in Waverly than it is in Pasadena.

I doubt he comes to nebraska

So he wants to coach in the AAC or the MAC then? He isn't going to be an under the radar coach anywhere he picks... I also agree it is UCLA or Nebraska for him

I heard he doesn't like to recruit, which is not good in a state with a population of Nebraska.

Also, isnt he still under some kind of NCAA penalty if the school hires him?

What happened to Mora at UCLA? I remember some on here wanting him as coach here not too long ago.

no and no

do you think Frost would come in as Chip's offensive coordinator and head coach in waiting ???

No and no. No one likes to recruit, they just don’t talk about it until they get to the NFL. Truth is CK recruited well and won big at Oregon, a place tougher to do both than Nebraska. His NCAA issues were over years ago, he can be hired by anyone with no issues. CK is the biggest hire this offseason, as I don’t think Stoops will come out of retirement and Satan, Myer, Dabo aren’t going anywhere.

UCLA is the perfect fit for Chip. Doesn't have to leave the state to recruit, and the fans and boosters there care more about basketball than football.

One mic'd up video vs. a consistent pattern of being at odds with players in Philadelphia. Pelini was very charismatic at times, too.

Didn't hear as much about issues with players in San Fran but they are also a bottom-tier team that didn't get as much attention. I'd probably rather have Frost than Kelly, particularly based on age. If Frost hits, he's got a long career ahead of him.

One of my best friends, from Maine, son is a good friend of Kelly’s. They go back to Kelly’s days at New Hampshire I talked to him last month while visiting Maine and unless something really changes Kelly will not come to N. He would like another shot in the NFL first and as another poster said does not like recruiting and boosters.

A couple things:

1) I live in Eugene, Oregon and while I never met Chip I know multiple people who have and he ... um, he knows exactly what he wants. My buddy installed the audio/visual system in his house, and while Chip wasn’t necessarily rude to him he was just an extreme micro manager as to how everything would be set up. Now I think that works okay in college. When you start telling Desean Jackson that he shouldn’t have Chick Fil-A (or whatever) on Thursday’s b/c it’s too close to game day.

2) Chip would do well here. His style would play particularly well in the West. I think turning Wisconsin games into a track meat is a great approach.

3) UCLA won’t pay top dollar and their boosters are unable to pony up. If we want Chip we will no doubt be able to outbid them

4) Chip definitely wants back in the NFL IMO. His ego is huge and he wants to prove he can stand out on that level. BUT he’s a smart enough guy to know that he needs to rehab his reputation at the college level.

5) I think the recruiting aspect is overstated. He can win big with top 25-30 classes. A couple stud recruiting assistants and the Nebraska brand can reach those levels without the head coach having to be constantly on the road.

My position is that if we can get Chip, he’s the easy choice. There is no other possibility that would make me feel as certain about short term success in between the lines. Frankly out of realistic possibilities it’s not even close

Is he a realistic choice? It seems like most people didn't think we had a chance with Kelly until we hired Moos.

Mora will be owed $11 million if he is fired during or after the 2017 season. Considering he is the highest paid coach in UCLA history at $3.5 million. The Pac 12 network is not as lucrative as Commissioner Larry Scott believed it would be, and the University of California system is nearly bankrupt. I don't think Mora goes anywhere.

During previous, all too frequent coaching changes, lots of people mentioned hearing about cable installs in Lincoln. Bob Davie comes to mind as one past example. While your friend isn’t a tv installer, he’s close enough to it for our needs. Thanks!

While I agree with everything you said, the same could be said about Nebraska. It may not be on the same level, but we had to pay out Bo Pelini $7.65 Million. We also had to pay the rest of the staff $1.9 Million, and that won't be done until next year. When you add in what we would have to pay Riley it would start evening out and it gets close to the same. So do we get rid of Riley? The reasoning for not getting rid of Riley is eerily the same as your theory behind UCLA not getting rid of Mora

Except that the Big 10 network and revenue is exceeding expectations, Riley's buyout is $8 million and the University of Nebraska system is not nearly bankrupt. Additionally, I didn't mention this, but someone else did, the boosters at UCLA don't care enough to pony up the money, Nebraska doesn't have those issues.

I would agree that Kelly might be a reach. I think of him as realistic in the sense that he is not under contract and that he will need a stepping stone job to get back to where he truly wants to be. If we were to get Chip it would only likely be for a handful of seasons.

Chip has one more chance to prove he can coach, if he falls flat at his next stop he's just another guy. He'll get one more legit opportunity, and I'm betting he's going to put himself in the best position possible, and that isn't Lincoln Nebraska, sorry to say.

He's already proven that he not only CAN coach but can excel at it. If you're talking about the NFL, that is a different story.

If he fails for the third time in a row, his star isn't nearly as bright, and he won' have his pick of jobs in the NFL or college. Right now, he could still probably get any job he wants in college, not so much in the NFL. Tack on a third straight failure, and he's just another guy who had a Heisman QB that made him look good.

He has yet to fail on the college level though. Of course "fail" is subjective.

On top of his total fails at his two previous jobs, he's also considered a racist now. Not saying I agree with that (I don't), but he has to get his next move right.
