First Husker in portal

O
I said the 2 frosh AAs were good players to add to the list of those who’d be missed if they left, making it 4 players long (all on the DL)

whichever 10-15 centers are in the portal today could replace Scott and we wouldn’t notice. He’s perfectly average, slightly above on his best days (there weren’t many)

The consensus here is our team lost more games than it won because we have very little talent (not because of the coaching staff).

If that’s true, we should be upgrading everywhere.

What 10-15 Centers are out there?

Why would you make a change that “no one would notice”.

I am assuming you would make a personnel move to IMPROVE our talent. So back to my question….

Which one would you bring in? Give me a name.

It’s a simple example, Bill. Throw a dart at the available centers and it’s likely you don’t notice a difference between him and Scott, which was a player you named, not me.

Same goes for the lions’ share of our regular contributors. We won 3 league games in arguably the worst year in recent memory of an already weak conference.

Scott is replaceable. Just like all but maybe 4 guys on the team right now.

You’re your knee jerk comment about “everyone is replaceable” when checked is followed by another generic (and wrong) answer.

When you admit that Ben Scott is the better than the portal choices we would land, I can then move on to another current Husker. I can go about 25 deep with our current roster that you’d have a hard time refuting.

So the “throw a dart” comment means that you believe that EVERY center in the portal is as good as Ben Scott.

Good Lord.

Ben Scott is a damn fine Big 10 center. Blocking is on point. Great attitude. Line calls on blitzes were solid. We have come a long way from the terrible snaps of his predecessor. And that guy is playing in the league.

Just try to find me ONE center in the portal that we would even consider.

Or admit that Scott is not replacement either and we can move on to the next guy.

I get it you like our guys because the they’re our guys. Nothing wrong with overvaluing players simply because they wear your favorite color.

Reality is, after 4 (5?) years of college football Scott has peaked as an average player

So has benhart

I am not talking shit about these players or the rest of our roster. It just is what it is.

We have plenty that need to go. I don’t like our guys because they are our guys. Far from it.

Let’s stay on topic. You’re trying to change it.

So what if Scott has peaked? He’s a solid Big 10 center. All conference in a league of tough IOL.

You said he’s replaceable. Im refuting it.

I asked you to provide just ONE center in the portal you’d rather have than our All Conference center.

Then you decide to bring up our other All Conference RT as another guy that’s replaceable. Ha!

I’m not saying Scott is peaked out or not. I’m saying he’s NOT replaceable. You’re saying he is.

Show me ONE replacement for him that would be an upgrade.

*honorable mention all conference

And I’m telling you the top 12 (which is as far as I scrolled) on this list would at worst replace him and likely would be an upgrade

Literally pick one.

I also haven’t stopped laughing at you bringing up Jurgens, who left early to be a 2nd round pick, when comparing Scott who would play avg on our line until he’s 40 if he could

I see how the game is played now, it just took me awhile…

Anyone in the portal is better than what we have, outside of the four mentioned previously. And since they’re all better, I don’t need to provide a name.

And since there’s no way to prove that they would be better, I’m right and the rest of you are wrong.

You are proving you don’t know football.

Your list you just provided are ALL guards except ONE. Ethan Miner is the ONLY center on that list.

Let’s compare

Ben Scott -
6’5” 305
Started 27 games for Arizona State before starting 11 for Nebraska. All conference Big Ten.

OR

Ethan Miner
6’2” 285
Started just about every game for Arkansas State and North Texas. All conference C-USA.

That’s it. That’s all that’s on your list in the Top 12.

Care to show me exactly WHO you would take now out of the portal who would be better than Ben Scott?

His list he provided were all Guards other than one 6’2” 285lb kid from North Texas.

His proof sources saying “pick any of them” don’t even include Centers.

Clueless.

You’d say this is true for the QBs, no?
Stop changing the subject. We are talking about Ben Scott and you claiming he’s replaceable.

I’m still waiting for a name. So far the list you provided of “pick any of them” had 11 guards and one 285lb center.

And we all know how that would go in the Big Ten.

Benhart just set the NU record for games started

Worked his way up to maybe average in 5 years

I view Scott the same way. Definition of replacement level (baseball eval term, I don’t expect you to understand it & you’ve proven you don’t)

We can and should want/have better

On3 doesn’t provide Center as a position to sort by.

Just “Inside OL”

I stand by my post. If Scott or benhart or anyone on the OL left and were replaced, we wouldn’t miss them

So do your homework and actually find ONE center that’s better than Scott.

Their highest rated actual Center is 285lbs.

Go find one better. That’s my point. He doesn’t exist. Ben Scott is a good player that’s NOT replaceable. Benhart has played himself into a similar position although it’s easier to find a stud RT than Center

I am telling you every average center in the country is the same

Your fixation on “one name” is pointless when my answer is “literally any/all names”

Scott is replacement level. That’s the point. He was the center on a 5-7 team after being the center on multiple other non-bowl teams.

He’s not going pro despite being what 22, 23 years old?

Get a clue, guy. He’s a nameless, faceless, replacement level player.

This is fun. I’ve actually got him on ignore but I have to check in just to watch him flounder. 😂

You ignored me?? Was this before or after accusing me of being the UNLV shooter?

Disappointing. I honestly thought more of you.

I would like to send you the $100 I owe you for Donny being retained.

Maybe someone else can let him know? @JOHNNY N can you help?

Sure, but you have stated everyone on our team could be replaced by all the current portal entrants except for 4 guys. I’m just trying to get a handle on how the game is played.
I said all but 4 wouldn’t be missed if they left because they’re replacement level players (or worse).

Baseball has a stat called WAR. This is the thinking I’m referencing.

We have extremely few players on todays roster who are worth actual wins.

Help me understand… you aren’t saying those in The portal are better, necessarily, but our guys wouldn’t make a dent if they entered the portal either. If that’s what you’re saying, I agree to an extent. I think there are more than 4 guys, primarily on the defense. But that’s just an opinion.

Correct. Replacement level is replacement level. It’s nothing personal.

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is the primary means of player eval in Major League Baseball

I’m absolutely open to adding to this list of guys whose departure would be felt in a tangible way (read: wins/losses) on the field heading into 2024:

Nash
Robinson
Cam
Princewill

I am tempted to also add Hartzog to this list, as I have very high expectations for him and believe he has the potential to be a high impact player, but he also might be kind of caught between positions in the current scheme, which would simultaneously increase his value to our team specifically while decreasing his overall potential impact on a weekly basis.

Ironically lowering his overall impact potential might indeed make him all the more indispensable. Tough one.

I thought Hartzog was often a step slow this year. Singleton was a baller before his injury. I think we missed him.

I was thinking of Singleton as well. Also believe (or maybe hope is the better word to use) guys like Fields, Sherman, Jeudy could get there, but maybe not… we’ll see soon enough.

25?

We saw the same thing

To be fair, Hartzog played 3 positions this year (corner, slot corner, safety)

Which is why he’s still tantalizing

And why his overall ceiling being lowered could actually mean he’s more valuable to us specifically

But that could also just be me refusing to accept his reality as a non-elite player

Same. I think next year will reveal who he is going to be.
