It’s a simple example, Bill. Throw a dart at the available centers and it’s likely you don’t notice a difference between him and Scott, which was a player you named, not me.
Same goes for the lions’ share of our regular contributors. We won 3 league games in arguably the worst year in recent memory of an already weak conference.
Scott is replaceable. Just like all but maybe 4 guys on the team right now.
You’re your knee jerk comment about “everyone is replaceable” when checked is followed by another generic (and wrong) answer.
When you admit that Ben Scott is the better than the portal choices we would land, I can then move on to another current Husker. I can go about 25 deep with our current roster that you’d have a hard time refuting.
So the “throw a dart” comment means that you believe that EVERY center in the portal is as good as Ben Scott.

Ben Scott is a damn fine Big 10 center. Blocking is on point. Great attitude. Line calls on blitzes were solid. We have come a long way from the terrible snaps of his predecessor. And that guy is playing in the league.
Just try to find me ONE center in the portal that we would even consider.

Your list you just provided are ALL guards except ONE. Ethan Miner is the ONLY center on that list.

Started 27 games for Arizona State before starting 11 for Nebraska. All conference Big Ten.

Ethan Miner
6’2” 285
Started just about every game for Arkansas State and North Texas. All conference C-USA.
That’s it. That’s all that’s on your list in the Top 12.
Care to show me exactly WHO you would take now out of the portal who would be better than Ben Scott?

Go find one better. That’s my point. He doesn’t exist. Ben Scott is a good player that’s NOT replaceable. Benhart has played himself into a similar position although it’s easier to find a stud RT than Center

Sure, but you have stated everyone on our team could be replaced by all the current portal entrants except for 4 guys. I’m just trying to get a handle on how the game is played.

Baseball has a stat called WAR. This is the thinking I’m referencing.
We have extremely few players on todays roster who are worth actual wins.
Help me understand… you aren’t saying those in The portal are better, necessarily, but our guys wouldn’t make a dent if they entered the portal either. If that’s what you’re saying, I agree to an extent. I think there are more than 4 guys, primarily on the defense. But that’s just an opinion.
Correct. Replacement level is replacement level. It’s nothing personal.

I am tempted to also add Hartzog to this list, as I have very high expectations for him and believe he has the potential to be a high impact player, but he also might be kind of caught between positions in the current scheme, which would simultaneously increase his value to our team specifically while decreasing his overall potential impact on a weekly basis.
Ironically lowering his overall impact potential might indeed make him all the more indispensable. Tough one.

I thought Hartzog was often a step slow this year. Singleton was a baller before his injury. I think we missed him.
I was thinking of Singleton as well. Also believe (or maybe hope is the better word to use) guys like Fields, Sherman, Jeudy could get there, but maybe not… we’ll see soon enough.

To be fair, Hartzog played 3 positions this year (corner, slot corner, safety)
Which is why he’s still tantalizing
And why his overall ceiling being lowered could actually mean he’s more valuable to us specifically
But that could also just be me refusing to accept his reality as a non-elite player
