People say that Austin should be fired. I don't argue against his bad coaching ability, but you have to realize that changing the OL coach will do no good if the schemes do not change too. The new guy would be told to teach the same technique that has been a disaster......Frost screen scheme instead of what should be used, which is the zone scheme that Iowa uses.
It's the same thing with special teams. If Frost doesn't change the importance/emphasis of special teams during practice, hiring a special teams coordinator will do no good since it's not an emphasis as much as it should be.
Not many realize the real problem are the schemes being used for this offense. RB recruiting is focused on guys who are told "we want you to make one cut and go." WR/RB combo is dumb in the Big Ten. The linebackers in the Big Ten are nothing like the Pac 12 and ACC and the LOS in the Big Ten is man football. There was a reason why Oregon never won a national title under Chip Kelly.
When two out of three phases of the team need a complete overhaul, it's due to having the wrong head coach in place, not simply replacing a position coach.
When Brett made a change to his OL coach at Wisconsin, he didn't change the scheme, he brought in someone that could do a better job of teaching it and it worked. When Minnesota fired their DC, they didn't change schemes. They needed someone that could coach better and call better defensive plays. It worked.
When Ohio State took Coombs's responsibility away from calling the defense after Oregon, they didn't change schemes. It worked.
If you want better special teams and offensive play, you will need to change the schemes.
