With a top 11 of:
Gates (LT)
Foster (LG)
Raridon (C)
Farmer (RG)
Conrad/Kneval (RT)

Farniok (LT)
Barrnett (LG)
Decker (C)
Wilson (RG)
Gaylord and whichever one up top that doesn't start (Conrad/Kneval) (RT)

Then you still have:
Brokop (G)
Hannon (G)
Johnson Jr. (T)

True Freshman/Most likely Redshirting
Walker (T)
Jaimes (T)
Sichterman (G/T)
Bando (G)

WE FINALLY HAVE DEPTH AND SHOULDN'T BE RELEYING ON WALKONS FOR THE BIG UGLIES!!!

This year should be (again, should be) one of the biggest steps forward our o-line has had in years. For what has seemed like the last 10 years we haven't been able to find 5 guys to fill the positions, much less 8-12 to create legitimate competition. When was the last time our starting LT was pushed by a back-up? When was the last time we had a center, instead of having to find a center? Guys like Farmer, Knevel, Conrad, Foster and whoever the center position goes to, will have legitimate competition this season. And that is one of the best things to happen to our offense in years.

Last year three walkons (present or former) started at some point on the Oline, Utter, Hahn and Conrad. That is no depth defined. This year will be final clearance of dead wood on the Oline, as 2018 will feature Conrad, Farmer, Foster and Gates as Seniors, with a well stocked room of young guys.

Next years class will really need to be strong. No homeruns in this years class, IMO - no extra base hits either. All singles. All works in process. Cant do that every year. Cav IMO needs to step up his game big time

But the line should be good for a year or two. If it's not, its not due to talent

I am very, very excited for next year. We are going to be better at QB, offensive line, and running back (Tre Bryant I think will emerge as a real weapon). We MAY be thinner at wide receiver but with the better QB play we will probably still get more production out of that unit than we have in years and years.

On defense we will have a better scheme with better Linebackers, and a more experienced Davis twins. Our secondary should have loads of experience as well.

And if our season is as successful next year as I think it will be, our recruiting should be through the roof.

I am not a koolaid drinker. I can be as pessimistic as the biggest pessimist on this board. And if I was pessimistic about next year I would say so. I think we are going to kick ass next year.

I think Jaimes is a stud. Just got his 4th star on Scout, wouldn't be suprised if he ends up on 4 star on all three sites. There is a reason schools like Texas and TCU came after him recently.

I think it would be a good sign if Farniok could pass Conrad, would probably indicate that he is the real deal.

I agree. I don't think we need 5* OL. If we can get them great, but if you are constantly getting those upper 3* 4* Lineman and give them two or three years to develop that's how we need to recruit. Look at places like BAMA, they don't have FR or RFR starting on the line. They are usually JR and SR's with maybe a SO in there

THIS. I think BJ is one hell of a get. I think he'll be starting at LT in a few years. Plus he comes from a powerhouse program in Lake Travis and knows what a winning culture is supposed to be like.

Knevel is a mysterious one to me. Seems like he's got the ultimate frame for an OT, and you hear often how athletic he is for his size in practice chatter. Mentality and mean streak for an Olineman is just as important as measurables.. Knevel being Canadian can't help that mean streak don't ya know eh

Hannon and Johnson are emergency guys only it appears. I wouldn't necessarily put Gates at LT either. I would not be surprised to see him either move back to RT or inside to guard. It's going to be a helluva competition for every spot on the offensive side of the ball. Nobody has a lock on a starting spot. Heck a true freshman could come in and start next fall depending on the guy and position.

Redshirting and building depth in the program is how Nebraska can compete with teams that out recruit us. That's how you build a program. Take a few hits/rough years to build seniority on the roster to jump start some success that should eventually lead to better recruiting. I like what Riley is doing. Hopefully it pays off

Sichterman is also going to be good I believe. Two years in the weight program and both Sichterman and James will be good to go.

If Farniok can't beat out Kneavel we are in a world of ...you know what! I fully expect Farniok to start at RT

The best two tackles will play. Could be Farniok easily.

Farmer, Gates, and Foster aren't locks? Yeah right, and where would a true freshman play? Those guys need some years to develop and would be best served by redshirting. We need to recruit the offensive line better. This year's group is very average compared to last years'.

Gates is not a lock to start at LT(you will note I said "starting spot"). Farmer is not a lock to start. Foster probably has the best chance to retain his starting spot at guard of all of them. Gates is not a natural tackle but he was much better on the right side than he's been on the left. We've got some really talented kids redshirting and they are going to push hard for starting spots. I wouldn't rest on my accomplishments if I was any of those returning starters. They didn't play well enough to think they can just show up and keep their spot.

Gates is starting whether you like it or not. Fiornik's film looks sick, but he's going to struggle st tackle. He's very stiff that you can try and coach but it's a God thing. Gates is your left tackle and right tackle or guard in the NFL. Albeit a backup.

You are nuts if you think Gates will not be a starter.

Re-read my post. I did not say "he won't be a starter". I said his starting spot is not safe meaning LT. He is not a great left tackle. He will start. The question is where.

I don't see who will play there. If we had landed Sarrell, he could have played LT and Gates moved back to RT, or inside with Farniok at RT, but I don't see anyone on our roster currently better suited to play LT.

If one of the younger tackles made a Spencer Long type improvement, Gates would still be at LT.

I think you over estimate Gates's ability to play LT because the rest of our O line has been so .....average (being kind) for so long. I am hopeful that a guy like Farniok can be a difference maker at LT. We'll see.

Several players listed at the incorrect positions and, ike was pointed out, two likely will be gone
