Feels damn good to have Riley as HC

Talent is only one part of the discussion, one still has to develop that talent while building depth to fill behind the front line. And we have none to fill in 2015, that's a major problem.

For some strange reason, I feel better as a Husker fan at 1-2 with Riley than I would with Peelini in charge at 3-0. Banker is still a big concern.

Banker is a concern for me too. I think like pretty much every other Husker fan, we were wary about both him and Read although they'll get their shot to prove their mettle.

A couple weeks ago, Damon Benning and those guys were having a conversation about what is the next step for NU, everyone keeps going back to the attributes of the 90's, but they thought a more realistic target near term was NU of the 80's.

NU in the 80's didn't play a lot of stellar defense, but the offense was pretty darn good. I don't know that I share the sentiment that NU has to play Top 5 defense year in, year out to get back in the conversation. The top 5 defense in the 90's, is what took NU from "pretty darn good" to "epic".

I Have To Agree That I Love Riley.
Humbleness And Honesty Are Priceless.
He was asked after the game what the deal was with the lack of energy to start the game.
His response: what we All will have to go back and look at exactly what we did and change whatever we can to do a better job next time.
Something cali and bo both had a problem doing was admitting they possibly did something wrong and admitting They may need to change some things to do better next time.
More Respect Earned.

What a breath of fresh air!

The unbridled optimism in this thread is dizzying. It feels good to no longer have the pelini headache as coach but what has Riley done to make me feel good about his hire? How can ya feel good about the hire when three games in (if not one, or even before the first game) concern rises about his hand selected DC? I hope it all works out but all this adoration, I don't get it.

I simply want NU to win. I hope Big Red will be pretty good by the end of the season and we get a win we don't see coming. Maybe over a team in green and white.

I feel good about the direction of our offense...especially when we get more depth on the line and more playmakers at wideout. I do think DC is a major concern. Despite some issues DE and LB not a huge fan of what he's done thus far.

What's dizzying is watching people support Peelini up to the bitter end. You don't have to feel good, you can feel whatever you want and post about it, that's the beauty of this forum, everyone's opinion is welcome. As for me, the calming nature of Nebraska football under excellent leadership, something we haven't had in a long time. Whether that results in w's or championships or top 10 finishes or major bowl games remains to be seen. If it doesn't happen, it'll be up to the next guy.

If you can't feel damn good about having someone represent the University, state and fan base the way coach Riley does, that's on you, not me.

What's wrong with optimism? It's not the same as happiness. Nobody here is happy about the current state of the program, but some actually think we can make progress under Riley. What good does calling out a brand new coach do except make you feel glib about how smart you are for doubting the new staff?

There is literally nothing that will bring me down this year.

I agree. But MAN. Did Saturday's game hurt. After the game my wife got mad at me because I had to go for a drive to decompress. Whatever. I was only gone 15 minutes.

I am really trying to focus on the fact that we are only a few plays away from being unbeaten. It was also nice to see BYU play UCLA close. At some point those few plays HAVE to go Nebraska's way. If not, it will be a long couple of years.

Problem is, by the time he gets it going, he'll be ready to retire and the vicious cycle begins again!

Yup. I'm essentially planning on staying away from this board the rest of the season because it's too much panic, hasty commentary, and gloom. I'm interested in having fun on this ride and this board isn't helping that at all.

If you stay away, yours is a voice that I would miss. I would encourage you, for the sake of positive minded people, to stay on board throughout the season.

Thanks for the kind words.
The fun thing is that we have had more substantive discussions about the defense over the last few days than I have seen on here for years. Guys actually talking about what they are seeing and what we might do differently instead of just saying this coach sucks or that player sucks. Some of it isn't necessarily always right but the discussion helps flesh that out. There's only about 2-3 posters pissing in the punch this week and the rest of it has been pretty interesting and educational talk.

This. You better not leave me, bro. Not with all the Bo-ners that will surely come out of their holes after any and every difficulty of our team. It's fun watching Riley put this team together. Forget the naysayers. We root for the Huskers and not a coach.

Riley is a huge step up from Pelini, I just hope we don't cosgrove D with the DB's please tell me the players are taught to go up and challenge the ball still? That is my main concern that I've seen so far. The rest is recruiting.
The secondary play has been irritating to say the least, but I'm liking the overall product so far. I definitely wouldn't seeing a more aggressive approach.

Respond to what? A civil difference of opinion? I read this days ago and didn't feel compelled to respond. I don't get insulted when someone disagrees with me, or feel the need to call them names and tell them they are wrong, particularly when you were so board-gracious as too tell me my opinion was welcome and added beauty to the board. It meant so much to me, coming from you!

I agree, I love the HC. He's a perfect fit for the Huskers from a personality perspective. I am bullish on the future.

Mike Riley by all accounts is a fundamentally decent man who is very well regarded within his profession. What's not to like about that? As far as results on the field, I like what I see on the offensive side. As far as the defense goes, it is troubling, but injuries plus lack of depth cloud that issue. We are playing a RS frosh on the Dline and there is talk about playing a Davis brother. True frosh, RS frosh and a walkon at LB. A greenish front seven plus a new scheme that provides less margin of error for DBs. What can go wrong will go wrong. And it has gone wrong.

I'd wish you well on your leave of absence but since you aren't here anymore it would be a waste of time.

Well I suported Bo to the bitter end because why not and I bet I'll be the only one supporting Mike to the bitter end too. But unlike some people I have moved on from the childish name calling and bitterness of last year but I'll say adding that extra "e" to Pelini is creative

Welp lets go out and turn this year around from the W/L standpoint. Go Big Red. There is no place like Nebraska!

Thank you. Time to move on. Lets give MR a little time to pull this together. Personally I'm happy with the offense performance it's the first year(better then expected). D needs work, but I have faith. .

I got to know one of Bo's coaches and surprisingly he still loves NU. Sure he was mad about getting fired at first who wouldn't be? My advise is move on, cheer the team and expect exclenece from the entire program.

I'm happy with the offense and totally dissapointed in the defense. There is nothing wrong with expecting Mike and Mark to fix the D without making up excuses from the past. GBR

You may be correct, but all the evidence points to something else. Bo loves his paycheck, but not sure he loves NU.
