Donte Williams Official

http://journalstar.com/sports/huske...cle_a83d0b9c-2483-5d80-b471-52f8823536be.html As a recruiter, he was recognized last year by Sports Illustrated as a top 10 recruiter in college football, and named the top recruiter in the Mountain West Conference by 247Sports in 2014.
"I am truly blessed that Coach Riley thought highly enough of me to join his staff here at the University of Nebraska," Williams said in a statement. "Everything I have seen in Lincoln has completely raised my expectations of what I know we can accomplish here. I look forward to continuing the success of the Blackshirt defense under Coach Riley and the whole Big Red family."

Floating around he'll make $400k this year with a $25k bump the following year, 2-year contract.

I hope he likes coffee, because it's closing season.

Can I get a CNN link? I can't be going off Twitter as "official" haha

Oh no. The dreaded $400k salary range. If our pass D isn't top 5 next year then he has to go...

With the returning experience and talent, combined with the league/schedule, Nebraska should actually have goals like that going into next year.

Disagree. We lose 2 senior DL, have no discernible edge pass rushers, and we lose our 1st/2nd round NFL safety. I do like our CBs, but I think we need a pass rush first, and then some good competition at the existing safety/nickel spots. The Williams duo kind of fell off the last month of the season. Do like Antonio Reed filling in for Gerry, though.

I'd be EXTREMELY surprised if Gerry is in the top 2 rounds.

Outside of Jones, I don't see the talent. At least not from the returning starters.

Kalu, no business at CB, should be slot.
A Williams, okay but not the level needed.
K Williams, same as above.

We desperately need Lamar Jackson to take over Kalu, pushing him inside in nickel/dime only.

I've had enough watching safeties with stiff hips covering the slot. It took enough games for A Williams to get exposed and when it happened, the gates opened up. I'm hopeful one of the Williams' aren't starting next season.

You got any scoop on Butler, Bootle, or Dismuke?

Kalu is extremely solid at CB. If anything, Lamar Jackson needs to have a good offseason to fill the nickel spot. Lamar has quite a lot of learning to do before he can fill a full-time role.

Lot of it will depend on team needs, but what don't you like about a 6'2" 230 pound safety that can run and has the big tackle/interception numbers that he does?

I've got nothing against him. He's a little stiff though I guess. The NFL guys do not like spending high draft picks on safeties though, kind of like Guards.

You compare Gerry's highlight film vs Karl Joseph(taken by the Raiders last year in the 1st round), and it's pretty tough to say you'd take Gerry ahead of Joseph, even if Gerry's measurables are much better.

Not sure it's a scoop; Butler had shoulder surgery, staff loves Bootle's upside, first time I've heard [read] Dismuke's name in months.

I really liked Butler's high school film, he played with a serious edge. Dismuke has the size, it'll be nice if his name pops up this spring.

Thanks. And to be honest, I agree on the talent assessment of the secondary next year. I was trolling a bit there.

I'm with you. Something would have to happen for him to go first two rounds; super big Senior bowl or assuming he's invited to the combine and posts off the charts tests that catches the attention of one team. He's projected anywhere from the 8th-11th best SS in the 2017 draft class, and I don't believe that takes underclassmen in to consideration. Combining the positions, he's between 17-23.

he's gonna put up really good numbers at the combine.

He likely won't be invited to the combine. CBS sports has him a projected 6th rounder. Gerry is a very good player but he is not in the same league as Jabril Peppers of Michigan or Jamal Adams of LSU.

LFG. Huge addition. Let's get some 4 Stars coach!
"He's just a cool guy. There's really no other way to say it," Biggins said. "I've heard some coaches try to talk to kids and it's painful. They try so hard to sound cool and hip and whatever. With Donté, he's just a cool dude. He's just a regular guy, he's young, he's energetic, he has a big personality. He has that going for him.

"But the biggest thing is, he really loves recruiting. He loves the chase. He enjoys that part of it. I kind of call it that 'new believer zeal.' A lot of coaches, I get it, they've been doing this for years and years. You get tired of it, having to go and basically suck up to these 17-, 18-year-old kids ... but Donté is young enough and new enough into it where he actually still enjoys it." http://journalstar.com/sports/huske...cle_a83d0b9c-2483-5d80-b471-52f8823536be.html

It's way early for NFL projections, but I would estimate Nate Gerry's chances of being drafted in the first round as about 1% and 2nd round maybe 5%. He would have to run a legit 4.4 or faster at the combine to even start getting such consideration.

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get invited. Just about every TV talking head I've listened to over the past year seemed to think he would. I think he may be the most likely followed by Banderas, Maurice and Westerkamp. We'll see.

Honestly what we really need is to land guys like Darnay this year and Bookie next year that can come in and start right away at CB, so we can move LJ back to safety. Then we will have some playmakers in the secondary.
