Donte Williams close to filling coaching vacancy

His Twitter account is private, which is very strange for a major conference assistant coach.

I noticed that too. I bet it won't be if he is on our staff. Gunderson and Vaughn use social media way too well for that.

I read he was offered the passing game defensive coordinator position. Pay will be about $400k. Suppose to decide "soon" but Riley wanted it done now so he can get be recruiting for Nebraska before the Dec 12 dead period.

Link? Very interesting if true.

So would fans think Riley has lost faith in Banker if that is true or just that Riley knows that area has been poor in some ways and he is making Nebraska better?

Correction - considered a top 10 recruiter in the Pac-12 not nationally.

I know I am in the minority but I always take things with a grain of salt.

Not a huge amount of experience in bigger programs. Arizona, for one year, is the biggest and they were 3-9. The stats they provide are used to point to his presence as the difference maker but do we really know that? Could be a new D coordinator come on at the same time.

I have to trust Riley and his staff on this but I am not going to get all star struck based on one article. I hope he is being hired to be equally a great coach and great recruiter. One or the other doesn't solve the problems. Where he is going to coach seems to be a question as he has experience with LB's and DB's. I don't see any special teams in his background which may not mean at thing. You would of thought it would have at least garnered a mention if he had done it. I want someone who can coach kickers and return teams - specialized work.

Watched his video and didn't see all the much technical stuff. A few standard techniques for cutting a player off, footwork, etc. Again, not saying he isn't technical but I would not want to use that video to prove it.

Can someone tell me what the charm of Tavita is? I know he is a GA and from all accounts is doing a good job but if you have the opportunity to fill another position if the NCAA allows, yes the traffic to hire the best will be difficult but where is the narrative of going after the best out there? I am not making a judgement on Tavita, I have no clue but the comparisons and talk of hitting it out of the park are not matching up.

The AD will decide who the next head coach is, not Riley. Riley might get asked. I would be shocked if ANY O coordinator was ever made a head coach at Nebraska. They are the most scrutinized person on the team.

Read on Twitter. Not feeling the urge to go back through the TL right now. It's Friday night and I am about to open a cold one. Ha ha

I do get nervous when things like this are leaked before they are a done deal. I wish we would hear something official.

I can't imagine Clouse would put his name on the line if this wasn't a done deal. There's a lot riding on something like this, and I imagine he confirmed it with someone before running with it.

From the article I linked "and in February 2015, Sports Illustrated named Williams a Top 10 recruiter in college football."

I read that. One has to ask why only in the top 10 in the Pac 12 and one publication in 05 has him top 10 nationally. I yield to your link but is still leaves some room for interpretation.

Same reason Scout has a guy as a high 4* and Rivals has the same player as a 2* while 247 has the recruit as a 3*.

Different publications, different opinions. It's that simple, or should be as far as I'm concerned.

All I know is, this guy has his name tagged on quite a few Arizona commitments.

Or he made up a position so he can recruit a lot of good players to Nebraska instead of Arizona?

Getting worried...hope this doesn't end up like the whole Tressel and Frost to NU rumors prior to Riley getting hired.

Another article on Donte Williams leaving to Nebraska from Arizona's perspective. The quoted Nate Clouse's tweet. Sounds like they would really miss him, and losing him could seriously affect their current recruiting class.

Williams, who was hired this past offseason from San Jose State, has been a huge contributor on and off the field, working with Dane Cruikshank and Jace Whittaker as the two premier corners for Arizona’s secondary in 2016.

Off the field, Williams has a reputation as one of the best recruiters in the west, and it shows in Arizona’s current recruiting class, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation. When I speak to recruits they always mention how great Williams is.

Williams has been the lead recruiter for Greg Johnson, Rhedi Short, Scott Young, Xavier Bell, Joshua Brown and plays an extremely large role among several other highly-touted targets. Williams was last in Los Angeles on Tuesday visiting Joshua Brown with Marcel Yates.

If this report is in fact true, it has huge implications for the future of the secondary and recruiting class at Arizona. I think you could see a wave of decommitments like we saw in the 2016 class. Recruits commit to a coaching staff, not a school, and I’m not entirely sure anyone would have seen this series of events unfold for Arizona.

That is sad for the kids. Get a bond built with a coach and then boom he is gone.

Some highlights from USC 1620 Nate Clouse. Credit to EastCoastHusker.

Couple of highlights
- Things have moved pretty fast. Read was let go on Sunday and Mike Riley immediately reached out to Donte Williams.
- Nate said it is only a matter of time before he is announced as a part of the staff.
- Mike Riley is setting the precedence that he wants great recruiters and great coaches and if people aren't pulling their weight Riley isn't afraid to pull the trigger and make a change.
- Where is he going to be on the staff - That's the big question right now. Nate threw out a couple of different scenarios but said not to rule out that it is likely that there is likely one more move that is going to occur on this staff.
- When asked further about the one more move and if it would be a shuffle or someone no longer on the staff - he said don't be surprised if there is another move and there is a coach who is no longer on staff and it happens quickly due to the bowl game and the recruiting dead period.
- Coaches are planning to make a mass presence in California and they are hoping to have him on the staff for this weekend to make a full impact. The majority of the staff is in CA for a couple of games and Donte Williams has been the lead recruiter on all of the same targets that NU is in on.
- After Nate broke the news on Donte, he got texts from some CA HS Coaches and a few other big people in HS fball out there saying this was huge news for Nebraska and it helps Nebraska land some of these guys a lot
- This changes the landscape with a lot of the recruits. Nate touched on Darnay Holmes as one of them and the possibility that his renewed interest in Nebraska may be due to him being aware of this news.
- Says it shouldn't be a concern that he is jumping ship from AZ after one year. Especially considering AZ went 3-9 this year and there was talk of RichRod being fired. He also will be getting a substantial pay increase so it helps him out in his career.
- Calibraska is already a big deal - how much will this change Nebraska's footprint in recruiting? It helps all of the ties in the West but shouldn't de-emphasize any other regions.

I bet he went private because he was being bombarded by Husker fans.

Nothing official. ........ yet
Williams is weighing the offer, and a decision is expected quickly.

Williams is currently the secondary coach at Arizona and serves as a key West Coast recruiter for the Wildcats. Nebraska’s offer to Williams would make him a defensive passing game coordinator, where he would continue to work with the secondary and be heavily involved as a national recruiter.

The offer includes a significant pay increase, and Williams is expected to reach a decision soon. Nebraska wants to add Williams quickly in an effort to get him on the road before the end of the December recruiting period, which ends Dec. 12."

Those were just rumors. I don't recall any article actually coming out claiming we were hiring or even close to hiring either one.
So far the only person with info is Nate Clouse. And anyone else that mentions it, just cites Nate Clouse.

I'm hoping it's true and I'm hoping even more that Williams accepts the offer.

One of the Arizona SB Nation recruiting writers is saying Eichorst gave the Ok to publish.

I've been told
Nebraska AD gave Nate Clouse the OK to publish the article. Done deal.

One of Arizona’s commitments, linebacker Joshua Brown from Long Beach (Calif.) Polytechnic, also chimed in:

He not going anywhere https://t.co/EmKuPlk03B

Exactly what I was hoping for, a big time recruiter. That article also mentions how much his position groups have improved under him as well so it sounds like may be getting much more than just a big time recruiter. Hope they can lock him up!!!

Big time PROVEN recruiter- some big nasty lineman please

Well, I am liking the sounds of this more and more from the recruiting perspective. I am going to go out on a limb here and say he probably had not considered ending up in Nebraska in his wildest dreams and I wouldn't be surprised if there are others waving offers in his face. If he is that hot of a commodity, it is bound to happen. Every team is looking for great recruiters and coaches.

Anyone who was worried about Riley just needs to look at his most recent boss moves here. Fires a guy who was underperforming and adds two great recruiters to his staff to take it to the next level. The man has already proven to be a better coach than the last four we've had.

Who are the two? Williams and who?

Does Anyone View Immediate Separations as a possibility?

I think its Stewart. He'll be a DC somewhere. Would also explain the defensive passing game coordinator title for Donte WIlliams. A kid who a year ago was coaching at SJSU probably doesn't get that title over a guy who has been a D1 DC and the Dallas Cowboys DC under Parcells.

In addition, if Williams is on board, we may not need Davis to be a lights out recruiter. Williams can bring in one West coast or Texas RB a year (he recruits Texas for UA) with Davis on the assist. (I believe Williams is credited with 9 of the 26 UA commits).

In fact, he may bring Greg Johnson and/or Tilford this year. Let Davis coach em up. He's very good at that.

OWH just released a "Breaking News" that Williams is expected to join the staff and that a source had confirmed to the World-Herald that the move was expected.
