Does Tommy Armstrong belong on the Nebraska QB Mount Rusmore?

Well of course this is premature, but we're a football message board so this is what we do, right?

Full disclosure I was drunk when I opened this topic. Upon reflection we'd probably need a bigger Mt. Rushmore to get him on. Can't forget Frost.

I'm not trying to squelch discussion. Love the thread. Just my opinion is that he doesn't crack the Top 5 at this time. I mean you'd have to have one of the great season either statistically or competing for a national championship to enter that conversation. I don't see TA doing the Heisman thing or this squad even making the playoffs. Trust me, I'm a big cheerleader for Tommy and I think this team has improved, but it's a little early for talks of either. I'm just taking this season one game at a time.

I would just be happy if folks stopped blaming him any time the team loses. No, he's not the best quarterback for the system Riley wants to run. He wasn't the best QB for the system Beck wanted run. But he's the best QB Nebraska has, is a hell of a player and has been for four years. Nebraska certainly would have lost more without him than with him.
No reason to pick up a chisel, just give the kid some slack.

That's where I've been. Got sick of people blaming everything bad on him. You can see how he performs when put in the right situation. Love his heart!

Yep. That's the drum that I've been pounding on. He's got awesome instincts as a runner and some natural gifts as a passer. You have to set him up to be able to do damage in QB run game, pulling the ball down and scrambling, booting out on RPO, etc.

All that sets things up for the defense to have to creep up, and then you can kill them with play-action. You get the defense to bite hard on PA and now all that QB has to do is read one or two routes and find the guy who is just WIDE open.

I'll keep coming back to my "magic number" where I think his pass attempts should be about 1.5X - 2X his rush attempts.

No. Tagge, Gill, Frazier and Crouch are all pretty solid picks.

TA4 has played well this year, but we have a lot of football to still be played out. He has had two pick-6's dropped so far. Let's see how this season plays out against better defenses, etc.
Did we even keep track of near pick sixes when those other guys played?? I don't ever remember seeing that stat

At this point I would have to say no, now if they actually won at least a Big 10 championship I would say he would move up the ladder but he'd still not make top four. Frazier, Crouch, Gill and for me it's a very tough call between Frost and Tagge. I was too young to actually see Tagge play and really only seen a few highlights of him. So personally I would have to say Frost. I think if Frost would have had three seasons under his belt more people would put him on that monument.

Second 4 (after Gill, Tagge, Frazier and Crouch) is tough to decide. I would start it with Humm and Farragamo I think. Not even sure that Tommy A. would make the second 4.

If you evaluate Tommy based on his importance to the team this year,,, then a resounding YES! He belongs.
