Dark Horse Coaching Canidate...

Cannot believe Scott Frost won't be UNL's next, but if not, Vandy's Mason would be an excellent fit to my mind. Very bright. Nebraska likable. Runs an offensive system and program that fits the Husker's run-first tradition.

After being there watching him beat K-State, Nebraska came to mind the next morning as the talking head's discussed your situation. Mason will be on a lot of list this fall, methinks. Came to Vandy from Stanford.

Get out the checkbook and "convince" John Gruden to come here. Instant line of 4 & 5 star players waiting to get into Nebraska. We would be in the playoff within 3 years.
This has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever read in here. He earns 7 mill a year to do MNF and a little bit of filler. No stress, no recruiting, no boosters.

Throw in the fact he hasn't coached a game in 10 years. Also, his record at TB was mediocre at best.

RU poster chiming in here. maybe you have'nt been a top tier program for
a while.but, let me make this clear. the nebraska cornhuskers to me ,are
one of the all time great programs in cf history.. the blueblood of bluebloods.
i remember those great games with oklahoma every year..i know that was in the 70's, none the less..but,..what the cornhuslkers need is that homerun hire
like ohio st, alabama, and michigan made im baffled why this hasnt been
done.yet. you have the cash....i know great coaches dont grow on trees, but
this isnt rutgers were talkin here. this is NEBRASKA. i cant blame the fan
base, but you should try being a rutgers supporter....we would kill for a steady
stream of 4, and 5 star recruits.....i just dont get it. anyway good luck on
saturday.

So would we. Good luck to you (after Saturday).

Maybe we snagged the wrong Oregon State coach. Maybe Gary Andersen (not Johnson!) is having regrets. I remember seeing him at Utah State and thinking he'd get a better gig soon and then Wisconsin scooped him up. He did well in Madison...my understanding was that he left because he was unhappy there.

Sounds like we need the SAn Diego st coach.

He's older than Riley

Gary Johnson might be having regrets about running for president. But as for Gary Andersen, he left Wisconsin because he wanted to change the system, whereas Alvarez wanted to stay with the formula that had been working for so long.

I went to the game at Rutgers in '15. I have to say, we were treated very well by all Rutgers fans I encountered. Very gracious, well-behaved. Even the students. Small but nice stadium. It was sad to talk to many of their fans, just how resigned to losing they were. Adds a bit of perspective to the current and future state of Neb football.

Mason is a great defensive coach. I remember being very impressed with his defenses at Stanford. But he's yet to have a winning record as a head coach, and his offenses have been pretty terrible for the most part. If he could win the SEC East this year he might be worth a look. We'll see how he does against Bama this weekend.

I could see Texas A&M, both Arizona schools, Arkansas (assuming they fire burnt enema), UCLA and maybe even Tennessee making a big push for him if they hit the 8-9 win plateau this year. That's probably the ceiling for Vanderbilt. Wherever he may end up, he will bring great defense and inject a serious dose of toughness.

I think the biggest issue at hand, isn't necessarily Smiling Mike. Do we want this AD hiring another coach? I don't know how the food chain works within the University, but he has to go, before Smiling Mike, period. If that means firing Eichorst, taking our time to find the right AD and a game plan for a new coach, so be it. I think its going to get much uglier on the field, but we absolutely cannot let him hire another Head Coach.

This is similar to what Ku is facing. Zenger has made two bad hires. Can't allow him a third. So, I believe you're right. Fire the AD. Let the next guy deal with Riley.

What's strange is that he was hired in the first place. Talk about a pendulum swinging choice from mad Bo.

As to Vandy's coach, someone will pick up a very solid, high character guy who will win a ton of games at a football school. You're right, Vandy has a ceiling driven by academics and lack of following. Their football stadium is second only to Ku's on the stoolage chart.

can we stop dicking around and get on the phone with Lane Kiffin

if he turns us down ... Skip Holtz (La Tech) or Jay Norvell (Nevada)

If any of these three get the job I will just give up. Just keep Riley if people on this board are determined to have a losing football team.

That was sarcasm ... Obviously it was a poor attempt

Pelini's biggest problem was recru

If Callahan had fired is D assistants, with legit guys he would still be here. Best recruiter Nebraska ever had.

Maybe, but wasn't his best recruiter John Blake? How did that work out at North Carolina. To be a good coach who have to recruit good athletes, manage them off the field, develop them to play to the best of their ability and to be a good game day coach. I will admit Callahan was a good recruiter, but I think he missed the mark in some of the other aspects of coaching.

I'm not sure how much $ their athletic dept has, but that is two disaster hires. I know basketball probably steers the ship there, but for my druthers, hiring a head football coach is a one-time proposition for an AD, unless his guy left for a greener pasture after success. With most schools being funded by football, it just leaves an indelible mark on the AD at many levels.

I am not a Bobot, nor did I hate him. That-said, I don't know everything that happened behind the scenes, that some "insiders" are quick to tell someone offering an opinion that "they have no clue, etc., etc.". His firing seemed premature, especially when reading Reichorsts quote how it crystalized to him one night and the rest is history.

I was never a fan of the Smiling Mike hiring. However, when the next HC is hired, it can't be a one-man search, much less by this guy (Reichorst). I recently read a stat that since he took over as the AD, DONU was either 12th or 13th in the B1G in combined football/basketball records. That speaks volumes, in the win-now and analytics-driven era of college athletics today.

Why not David Shaw? A solid B1G program with some of the most passionate fans? Not to mention way less of an academic requirement to play here than Stanford. This would be a home run hire.
David Shaw is being mentioned for the colts. He has a couple kids that he wants to attend Stanford which is keeping him there

Before Nebraska considers hiring Lou Holtz keep in mind that he has gotten every school he coached in deep trouble with the NCAA and put on probation. ND was to big of a name for the NCAA to tackle but ND didn't encourage him to leave for South Carolina because he wasn't about to bring them down. Think about it would you leave ND for SC if everything was going well.

There are exactly zero nebraska fans that think we should hire Holtz. I just checked.
