Coach Riley could name starting qb after spring

I think it's the right decision, even if they are close. If the coaches think they have a leader already, it lets the team use fall practice to get in a groove with "the guy" behind center. I think it helps with general cohesion and also an area of comfort to know who the leader is.

If it's truly too tight to call, then they should wait until fall.

I'd wait just to limit the chances that the loser in the competition has all Summer to consider leaving. We are still really thin and can't afford a transfer.

I agree. If they know who it'll be, announce it after the spring game or the following week. It'll help with summer leadership and cohesion as you stated.

I'll be shocked if it's not Lee, but it's amazing to actually have a backup and the drop off won't be absolutely God awful like it was during Pelini's tenure and Rileys first two years (thanks to Pelini.)

I just don't think POB would leave. One bad hit to Lee and POB is in. We've seen that happen a lot here over the last decade.

We need a quality back up, POB would have to sit either way, so why leave and for sure not be able to play?

He could go to a JUCO and play, get his associates degree and then go to another 4 year without sitting.

Does 2 things, he gets to play and he gets to put some games on film.

If a guy is that quick to leave as a RS Freshman because he didn't win the starting job, then he doesn't have the character necessary to win championships. It is easy to see many programs where guys don't win a QB job and they end up taking over teams due to injury or simply for being the better option and going on to great success.

We are also spreading this potential of leaving with no basis that he would even consider it. My money says that he is a level-headed guy and understands all circumstances.

I find it interesting the Lee and O'Brien are running neck & neck. One would think that Lee would have the leg-up based on his experience. So maybe Lee isn't as good as advertised or O'Brien is much better than any thought. Which ever QB has thrown the least amount of interceptions in Spring ball will probably get the stating nod.

Time will tell.

It would take a real selfish attitude to leave after just one year because you didn't beat out a guy with 2 years of experience. I have a hard time believing that this is even a factor, and if it is then it shouldn't be.

Unless he sees the writing on the wall. Maybe Gebbia is just better. So if Lee starts for 2 years, at that point POB is a RS junior with no options to transfer because he would have sat for 3 years, getting only mop up duty. And is about to be a 5 year back up.

What fans don't take into account is that most of these players don't have the emotional tie to Nebraska that we fans do. They just want to play, especially highly recruited QBs. Just being on the team isn't what they signed up for.

Its going to be Tanner. NFL scouts are already drooling over the kid and he hasnt played a snap yet.

Tanner could leave for the draft after this year. He'll probably have his degree, I doubt Patrick leaves. He's only a redshirt freshman and he's miles ahead of Gebbia physically. There are plenty of moving pieces that could change things.

Like others have said its just exciting to have more than 1 scholarship qb. Thanks Riley

FWIW somebody posted on here a tweet or facebook post a while back from POB's mom that there was no way he was leaving. Loves NU and Riley and was looking forward to improving his skills and eventually earning the job.

I think the "drooling over" is quite a bit overstated. There are a lot of QBs that have NFL bodies and an NFL arm but don't get a sniff in the league. So far Lee has 2 seasons of below average football at Tulane on his resume. Secondly, he applied for the 6th year for a reason. If he had NFL scouts telling him he was NFL ready now, then why play this year at Nebraska.

I agree that Lee gets the nod at QB for this fall, I don't believe it is a foregone conclusion that he leaves after this coming season.

Gebbia will put on weight and has more arm talent than POB and is not outworked by any of the QBs.

I am not saying POB leaves if he isn't named the starter, I am saying that the things I alluded to would be reasons for him to leave and I wouldn't be surprised if he did seek a transfer if he didn't win the job this year

If they are that close (nobody really knows except Riley and Langsdorf) wouldn't you want both to play in the first regular season game if not the first two just to make sure? Some kids are practice players, some are gamers, and some are both. I wouldn't mind seeing both play in the first game just to make sure. Just me.

Lots of unfounded speculation in this thread. Gebbia is a twig. O'brien is a RS Frosh still learning what I would consider a fairly complex offense. Lee is a seasoned vet that still needs to prove he has the skills to pay the bills. Thinking that all the B-ball transfers have spread fear that one of our whopping three scholarship quarterbacks will transfer if they don't get the starting nod.

Gebbia is definitely showing he will put in all the off field work needed to be a great QB. My guess is Gebbia will be an all conference type QB by the time hes a Junior. Hes already showing the work ethic and whilingness to be great and we all know hes got the arm and accuracy and QB coaching to get there. If OBrein doesn't win this out, he may very well transfer (maybe not this year but in the next few years). If OBrein wins he will lock the spot up for 4 years.
