Was over at UCF board. I noticed Chinander had been brought up. Many UCF fans only complaint from last year was him and his D. Said he coaches poor fundamentals and showed a video of like 7 missed tackles on one play. Unfortunately I didn't get to watch any of UCF games. Those of you that have did you notice any big issues with his D. Yes I know they gave up points, but with a fast paced offense that can happen. If there were other issues do see them being fixed here?

If we miss 7 tackles on one play but do it with our ears pinned back I'm going to call it big improvement

I saw plenty of their games and they did miss a fair number of tackles against the spread teams. I cannot say it was an inordinate amount though in comparison to other teams....going against high scoring spread offenses.....with players in their first or second year in a system

Gave up 27 to Auburn what would Neb given up to Aub
I was just going to comment about how well they played against Auburn. No doubt, UCF's offense was a juggernaut but their defense wasn't a Diaco defense, by any metric.

That said, Nebraska's defense is by biggest concern.

Against Memphis and USF, UCF's defense looked like crap for the most part. Those were 2 of the top 6 offenses in the country, however, so they made almost every defense look bad.

The Big Ten isn't generally known for high scoring offenses like Memphis and USF, so I think we'll be ok.

They did give up a lot of yards and a lot of big plays. Yet they brought pressure and got a lot of turnovers. And still just in year 2 of their rebuild. Diaco made it so the defense played so tentative that it was inevitable we'd get gouged. At least we will an attacking defense.

There is no question in my mind that Frost and Chin want to create a defense as tough as the blackshirts of old and are working toward it one day at at time.

At the same time, and as stoked as I am for the season, we are going to give up our fair share of points this year--which, of course, bums us fans out--but they did a hell of a job holding Auburn to 27 points. And we have to remember that the more our offense scores, the more our defense will be on the field the same amount of series'

I would much rather have them going 100mph and give a big play here and there vs play it safe and let a team march down the field 60-80 yards every drive.

Their first year at UCF the defense was very good ,statistically. Last year it wasn't as good, statistically, but was good enough to win them all.

One way or another, if Chin doesn’t cut it and doesn’t improve our defense I’m more then confident that Frost will find someone that will. I said it when we got Frost. I won’t second guess anything and I’ll trust in him to do us right. He is a Husker through and through. He will do what’s needed to turn his beloved Huskers back around and get us back up into the top 10 yearly. I truly believe in Frost to do that.

Guys we have to stop second guessing every single coach we get. We all claimed to back Frost fully and give him time to do things right here. So let’s do it, let’s not say one thing and a few months later second guess ever (or most) decisions he makes. If he believes Chin is the man to turn our once proud defense back into our true black shirts...then I believe it’s the right call. And if not, he will fix it in a hurry. Believe that!!! GBR and can’t wait for this season.

Agree, not second guessing his decision at the moment. Just curious why UCF fans disliked him is all.

To answer the original question from the OP, I just watched the Memphis game last week or so and yes the tackling was not very good. Receivers were running free, poor angles, lots arm tackles. It was not pretty. It did appear fundamentals were lacking.

Yes, the beat Auburn which I actually think the UCF D matched up well. Lots of excuses so far, it will need to be better in the B1G for sure. It doesn’t matter how fast your O is or what kind of O the other team runs, you still have the fundamentals of blocking and tackling.

I am in the same camp that has D as our biggest concern.

Very well said - this is our guy and we need to let him do his job. As many had stated before we will never get a top name to come coach here, well we got one. We got him because he cares and not because of anything else.

I have confidence this defense will compete.
I will also say this - I had stopped watching games last year and pretty much given up all hope we could ever compete to win our division let alone a conference. I now have the hope back and excited about the season - I am 100% sure that no matter the record this year this team will be better

One thing about being so horrible. Anything has to be better. As long as this teams shows heart and drive and plays 100% until the end it has to be better

Fortunately our squad only had 1 year of Diaco defense. Our guys will be able to shake that off rather quickly.
Is he employed? After Uconn and last years disaster don't know who would take a chance on him..... I guess I said that of Riley too and he is a HC again. o_O

My two cents:

1.) I think Chinander's attacking style will be a lot more fun to watch. Having watched that Auburn game like 5 times, what I saw was a darn good defense doing a good job of attacking the QB and stopping what they could. Mostly, it worked.

2.) I think Chinander will be unlikely to ever be thought of as a defensive genius, but in my opinion, his system is a perfect fit for Frost's offense; get the ball away from the opposing offense by any means necessary, to get that crazy Frost offense back on the field.

3.) The style of defense that this is, pressure QB's, get aggressive, try for take-aways, and always play at 110%, is going to do wonders compared to last year. Having said that, I bet the D is thought of as the weaker of the two sides in general most of the time, with Chinander being able to put together a truly fearsome unit after a few years and then every few years after that.

Great point on #1 and I especially like what you said in #2.

Charlie McBride was never the best defensive genius, he even said that at times, but he got all he wanted out of those 90s squads to get Osborne's offense back on the field to just freaking boat race their opponents.

The kool aid is super strong right now, and for good reason. I've drank some myself! We all just have to realize we're gonna be giving up a good chunk of points this year, but it won't be without Chinander's improvements in being aggressive to the ball. That's what I'm most excited about. No fear of failure!

I watched parts of, or an entire quarter or two of the Maryland, Memphis (both games), Austin Peay, SMU, Temple, & USF. Then the entire Auburn/Peach Bowl game.
The defense plays fast and aggressive and forces turnovers, unfortunately the USF and 2nd Memphis game wrecked their defensive stats. Prior to those two games UCF had been in the top 30 in many defensive categories. I think the wear & tear of the season with no bye weeks wore UCF's defense down.

Against Auburn I think the defense did a great job considering Auburn was a potent offensive team on the ground and through the air. What was most impressive was how UCF shutdown Auburn's run game. Auburn had 44 rush attempts and didn't even crack 100 yards.
One thing to also keep in mind against Auburn, Milton was not handling that big stage well in the first half and you know it's bad when teammates are on the sidelines when he'd come off the field to talk to him and try to calm him down. He missed a lot of plays that would have gone for TD's, setup TD's, or greatly extended drives and it's wasn't because of anything Auburn was doing, Milton was just flat out off. Milton being off, just gave Auburn the ball back that much faster and allowed them to gain more yards and points than I think they normally would have if Milton had been firing on all cylinders.

This is basically what I've heard from a few people that re-watched their games; they are actually really good overall, but by the end of the season they were beat to hell so USF and Memphis put a LOT of points on them. They didn't get a bye week at all, and luckily their offense stayed very potent all year.

Then, after a rest, they did great against Auburn.

Is this fair?

I think there will be an enormous amount of hand wringing over the defense, and then the fans are going to have to be educated about how the defensive philosophy fits with the offensive one (not that I agree with this at all) and the fans will have to learn that the entire thing is based upon fast tempo on both sides, to the point of almost basically letting the opponent score, just so you can get the ball and go score again . (which I think is absolute lunacy).. and is the polar opposite of the way we used to do things like control the ball and the clock.

I predict it's going to cause some pretty big outrage and can already sort of see it now to be honest. While it is a unique strategy, it has never won anyone a national championship, and I submit that the fans are going to have to get SF to eventually change the scheme.

I can see everyone yelling at their tv screens now and the message boards filled with DC hate, but those are the same fools who said they wanted to see an attacking defense too, so it's going to be ironic to say the least.

I can see Chin’s pump up speech now... “If they take longer than 6 plays to score, you guys are doing it wrong! Remember, this defense is designed to basically let the other team score... now go out there and don’t let me down!!!”

It is sort of funny how different all defensive schemes, philosophies and coaching personalities seem to fare better with better players and more depth.
