Casino Gambling in Nebraska

AKSARBEN didn't die a quick and lonely death, that was political. It was purposely sold to Douglas County so it could be given to UNO and FDR for pennies on the dollar. Ever heard of Don Everett? Owner CEO of Runza, well he offered $10 million more than UNO/FDR did for AKSARBEN and even told them that he would downsize the racetrack and barns area and give the rest of the land to UNO. I was @ the meeting when he put down a check for the whole amount and the County board didn't even consider his much better offer. So Don and the rest of us horsemen purchased a piece of land @ 60th & Q on a blighted piece of land that used to be the city dump and AMAZINGLY the city approved it and you now have a place there called HORSEMEN'S PARK. Which thrived and made money hand over fist despite all the competition around it. Then came this lil law banning indoor smoking which the casinos across the river don't have to abide by. Trust me put in sports betting, some one arm bandits, a table for guys to roll the bones @ 1 am and the place will be packed just like it is on Kentucky Derby day and every other huge racing days that keep it open.....

Revisionist history at it’s best! Aksarben was outdoors and smoking was allowed so using that as an excuse is irrelevant. The place wouldn’t have been for sale if it wasn’t a ghost town claiming it was because of UNO wanting the land doesn’t float. Let’s get back to the original question which was based on your claim that horse track gamblers would fill a casino and my question of where were these people when Aksarben was on life support?

I was bummed when they finally tore Aksarben down because for years me and my mountain biking buds would stop by on a ride across town with a six pack and go sit in the stands, box seating of course, and had the whole place to ourselves to drink and talk about the old days....That lasted for a few years after it had been closed down and we thought it was great....then they went and bull dozed it and ruined a perfectly good drinking spot. Sons-a-bitches.

Clueless, where you there? The indoor act has hurt Horsemen's not AKSARBEN. Changing times hurt AKSARBEN and it needed to be downsized, but simulcasting is all profit with little overhead. Why Horsemen's killed it. You put things on a level field in Nebraska and it will compete just fine, sports betting will eventually get to the Good Life state just like the lottery because it was a federal ruling. You have your head up your a$$ if you think Nebraskans don't gamble alot of money and don't wanna keep the money @ home instead of in off shore betting accounts and across the river in that armpit CB.

So your explanation as to why the throngs of gamblers deserted Aksarben is simply “changing times”, however you expect the same people to stampede to slots at a horse track? 😂

I love Horsemens! Horse racing is still incredibly popular in this state. Fonner Park on Saturday afternoons, Horsemens live meet, Columbus under the lights on Friday nights. All such fun environments!!

I would absolutely agree that we need to keep our money in-state and stop giving it away, but I prefer to play online poker. I can't say that it is more interesting but for me, it's more convenient. I mean, I have good results playing on an online casino. I haven't tried other sites yet, to play online poker, as this one https://menangjudi.com/mobile/poker fits me perfectly. If you also love poker, I think you can also try online poker, as I also was skeptical from the bigging, but it worked for me very well, and now I love online poker even more than regular poker.

Pleasantly surprised to see the gambling initiative actually passed by a very safe margin in Nebraska. Not personally a gambler but no reason IMO that all the gambling money should be going to other states.

Better late than never esp with sports betting about to be everywhere in this country

How much gambling can this area support? Does CB attract many people? What about Onawa Iowa. The few times I went years ago, I just felt bad for the gamblers. It was a sad sight. Same in Vegas. These folks sit in front of video games for hours, pushing buttons like a bunch of hamsters. I just dont get the appeal.

Well the losers are going to be those out of state casinos like the ones in Council Bluffs who in the past have depended on a lot of money coming in from Nebraska. As I said earlier I'm personally not a gambler but it's each to his/her own vices. If they're going to be spending money they might as well be doing it in their home state.

This probably is a bigger blow to Iowa than losing a football game to the Huskers! RollingLaugh

Something will have to give, hopefully the Iowa ones will be boarded up

I lived very near Aksarben during it's decline and would run/bike on the Papio trail. When they finally started to tear down the buildings, I encountered an "army" of rats that were displaced. Had never seen hundreds of rats fleeing a place before. Changed my running route for a month until they found a new home.

I love when people complain about gambling and the gamblers...and how sad it is.
It is, for most people, something fun that they do for recreation, the same way you might go for a walk or garden or paint or do a home project or go for a drive or fish or hunt.

I think hunting is the lamest thing you can do with your time, sit in a freaking cold ass wet forest hoping to see a freaking animal that is looking for some food so that you can ambush it and shot a hole into its body...sweet, awesome.

But I sure as heck wouldn't be like "What a bunch of loser and sad people". They love it, for them it is freaking awesome and I bet even when they don't get to kill something they have a great time.

That is what gambling is to most people, it is something fun to do.

And people's stories about Vegas are always about as false as can be. Vegas is not filled with a bunch of degenerate losers. It is filled with people on business trips, parties and family vacations.

I agree Vegas is mostly a good time, but one thing I will never forget is the makeshift tunnel that was up in front of City Center back when it was being built in I think 2008. Most of the sidewalks were clear and clean, just had to deal with card clickers and Impersonators trying to sell free club passes, but that tunnel was nothing short of the devil’s bhole. The smell of human vomit and piss that had been cooking in the desert heat was something that stung the eyes and almost made me add to the mess.

So will this finally make it "legal" for me to now use my very own Nebraska address to set up an account and wager online as well? That part has maybe been the biggest joke of the whole gambling not being legal in Nebraska thing.

Man I hope so, what a joke. Texas is sameway, smh

Never really knew who to believe in the adds because they were so polar opposites. Horse tracks only vs wherever the Indian tribes want.... every county possibly.

Heard on the radio yesterday that the Indian group in charge of this is already making plans for gambling in bars, restaurant and motels. IF correct, seems far from horse tracks

So Tom isn't allowed to give his opinion? Sorry but that makes no sense. He's a voting citizen just like everyone else. I would also prefer to keep casinos out. Council Bluffs did it and then had to raise property taxes multiple times. They end up driving out local restaurants and other businesses. No thanks. That's MY opinion. I respect yours but I'm voting no.

Which local restaurants and other businesses did the casinos in CB drive out?

The Indians will build multiple casinos and basically put the race track casinos out of business. By the way the Indians pay 0 in casino taxes. The joke here is on the taxpayers of Nebraska.

Why would one casino put another one out of business?

5 dollar blackjack is 5 dollars no matter where the casino is built.

Drinks won't be any cheaper...people will go to the one that is closest to go to or that has the most to offer.

You really think there will be multiple casinos built in Nebraska? Right now there are plans to put casinos at 3 race tracks in Nebraska. South Sioux, Lincoln and Omaha. Eventually there will be one in Grand Island. With the population of this state, I really don't see casinos popping up everywhere.

If having the most to offer is the key, the huge ones in Council Bluffs won’t have anything to worry about concerning competition from the glorified phone booths they will throw together in Nebraska.

Of course not, but most people that go are going for about an hour, to gamble, get a drink, maybe eat. That is really it.

The ones looking for something more will go to the places that have more.

If the casinos in Council Bluffs have absolutely nothing to worry about, why have they consistently thrown away millions of dollars on fake anti-gambling campaigns every time Nebraska considers a legislative bill or ballot initiative?

Clearly the posters who keep bashing gambling for Nebraska have some kind of interest in the Council Bluffs casinos. That much is apparent.

No matter, they can protest all they want and say Nebraska casinos will fail as much as they want. BUT now it's too late to sway voters. The vote has happened and casinos are on the way. The market will decide who is and who isn't successful. We don't need protesting pundits for that any more.

In-case any of you care, I actually sent an email today to the guy who oversees the racetracks in Lincoln/Omaha and asked him if this new casino by Lincoln will have a poker room. He told me he’s confident that it will and that they will have lots of space to build on and use.

Not sure if he has any financial interest, or if he's just obsessed with winning some kind of ridiculously stupid "Iowa already cornered the casino market" argument. If the Bluffs casinos really believe they won't lose any of their Nebraska customers, they sure go to great lengths to handcuff potential competitors.

It's interesting that Initiative 431 passed by a larger margin than 429 and 430. 431 is the part that includes the property tax "relief" that by my calculations on my $150,000 home will be about $35 a year. That's such a huge relief in my $2,700 annual property tax bill on my house.
