Can one player make a difference?

In order for one player to make a difference, what must be in place first?

On offense:
Is it the offensive line?
Is it the QB throwing to WR?
Is it the RB's to take the pressure off the QB?

On defense:
Is it the DL to free up the LB's?
Is it the LB's to pressure the QB's
Is it the DB's covering so the DE's can pressure the QB's?

Is it the other 21 players needed to make the one look like a playmaker?
Is it the coaches to develop the potential recruit?

How much needs to be in place before one player can make a difference?
Is NU in a place where one player can come in and make a difference?
How many more pieces of the puzzle are needed before a Tommy Fraizer can come in and dominate as he did, and for that fact, a Brooke Berringer to play as he did?

No one player can be a difference-maker if the other 21 players are not contributing. NU is miles away from this standard. Losing out a supposed playmaker could be the blessing in disguise this team needs. AM2 was supposed to be the next playmaker NU was to have and was far from it because his supporting cast and staff sucked, and he ended up being the whipping boy for the team. Having the so-called savior on the team now would probably cause more disunity than unity; now the team can focus on a team of average working Joes learning how to depend on the system and not the player. I'm not sure it is a great loss that DR went to another team, it could be the stress relief this program needs.

can one player make a difference? yes. especially a qb. especially the number one recruit who can bring other top recruits. and especially if they are a leader on a team that desperately needs it.

One person? As the OP states, not by himself. But it also matters what our goals are. We can do very well -- Bo Pelini style -- and win nine games a year with a bunch of lunch pail guys who have been developed and are in a good scheme with good coaching. But if our aim is conference and national titles, then we do need a real difference maker at QB. Yes, he needs a great team around him, but without a difference maker at QB you must, must, must have a really great defense in order to play for titles. But a high-end QB is a must in my view in modern football if you want to win titles.

Can you imagine the 2009 Huskers if they had had a real great QB? That defense was amazing but the offense blew chunks and Zac Lee was mediocre at best.

I believe if AMart did not turn the ball over so much, he would have been a true difference maker and Scott Frost would still be head coach.

Without Tommy Frazier, we don't win consecutive titles. Without Cam Newton, Auburn doesn't win its last title. Without Jor Burrow neither does LSU. Without Patrick Mahomes, KC's last title is the one they won in 1970.

I mean this makes no sense. He showed his skill set. You can literally say this about every player. " If only they were better" give me a break. And scooter had many more issues than just Amart. I am happy and hopeful now that they are both gone.

That should have been the season for great things. The Iowa St loss ruined that season.

I still think we get a BCS bowl if not for that loss.

This is my biggest concern about the current situation. If Sims gets hurt or reverts to his turnover ways what does Rhule do? Not sure we have a backup who can win B10 games.

A good QB can be the difference of a good team and a bad team in my opinion

Agreed. So much missed opportunity that year. That Iowa State game really did ruin our season and not just because it was a bad loss to a team we outplayed and should have beaten. But after that game, and due to all of the turnovers, Pelini really reined-in the offense and got super, super conservative. I think our offense could have been far more successful had he not done so. In the Holiday bowl against Arizona he took the shackles off of the offense and it ripped Arizona a new one. I remember watching that game and wondering, "where in the hell was this offense all year?"

Pelini also squandered something else that year. He failed to build off of the publicity surrounding Suh and did not recruit difference makers on the defensive line as he could have. He also had just come from LSU where he coached the All American defensive tackle Dorsey so there was no reason why he could not have used Dorsey and Suh as poster children for what a great defensive coach he was. Instead, he got lazy as a recruiter and pissed the opportunity down his leg.
