I rooted for Riley as long as I could until I could see that our team just was Not. Popping. Off. The. Screen. I appreciate his demeanor in how he carries himself, but as we all know college football is a business, and I haven't seen energy or passion for the game that gives fans goosebumps probably since the Oregon then-upset win. Sure, there has been a few players here and there with some fire in their bellies this year (Think Gifford, JD Spielman, Hoppes, healthy Tre Bryant) but one thing I don't think has really been mentioned: What defines a team, brand, business or product is not what you say Yes to, but what you say No to.

My gut feeling is that Mike Riley (and Sean Eichorst by default) have been so friendly with business decisions that they have said "yes" to a lot of the wrong people. It also feels like we have a lot of "me" players and not nearly enough "we" players. That tends to happen when you market Nebraska as a "stepping stone" to the NFL. Not a bad ploy in our current day and age, but very risky in recruiting players and recruits' future interests.

Everyone remember Billy Devaney? Yep, that's right. The guy who was fired by the Saint Louis Rams in 2011 for going 10-38 as General Manager. IMO he's as much to blame as anyone. More than likely he was behind the Banker firing, Diaco hiring and the rest of the hires. Anyone wonder why we are sucking so bad? Why he's been so quiet? He's Riley's RIGHT HAND MAN. Handing out the wrong Yes's left and right. I highly suggest Moos kick his butt out of the door ASAP.

One can argue 'talent this, talent that' but it is undoubtedly 1000% the coaching that is just not working out. It does not take rocket science to figure this thing out and it feels to me like this staff made it out to be like that. Game 1 of 2018 better look a hell of a lot different than what we're all enduring right now.

Some people must never sleep thinking of all the conspiracy theories. This web site rivals the lackluster play on the field. On second thought, it is worse.

What conspiracy theories? Billy Devaney is listed as a special assistant to the head coach and director of player personnel. Riley goes .54 percent in his career and Devaney goes 10-33 (.26) as GM for StL. Perhaps I'm not understanding your post, but this is not rocket science information to figure out.

I said it when it happened. Mike Riley isn't the kind of guy to fire a long serving assistant over the phone. I think Devaney was the "brains" behind that move. That is what NFL GMs do not college head coaches unless a guy is a complete d###. At the time of his hire, I thought it was innovative and good to have a football guy with no emotional attachment to assistants or players making some calls on personnel. Now? Maybe not. Diaco looked good on paper. Not so much in person.

Good heavens. Will the nonsense get any weirder?

Folks want Nebraska to spend, spend, spend. "Gotta spend like a blueblood program". Wait, it depends who you spend on though, a former NFL GM - regardless of success - has endless connections but he's the wrong person to spend money on. He sucks, 2 years later.

Need to spend it on a Jamrog type of guy. You know; former Husker player, former Husker coach, former car dealership employee who's currently the coach of an NAIA team.

This fan base is something else.

Fortunately, we have our new AD and program leadership here to make the right calls. We hope?

Don't know Bounds but IMO Ronnie Green was a very good hire. I don't think he'll let Moos mess this up. He's all N..
I think you are spot on about Ronnie Greene. I emailed him the day before Moos was announced as AD about the state of the football program and he responded to me 3 hours after the presser.

So Nebraska shouldn't spend money?
There is money to spend and I would think that should be a sweetener for the next HC. I didn’t know much about Billy D past the fact that he had NFL experience. Maybe the dude isn’t a fit, I don’t know.

Nah, we need to spend money on the Billy Devaney's of the world. I mean we pay him good money for talent evaluation.

Billy Shares Tanner Lee Comparison to Goff

“In 2015, Devaney recommended future No. 1 NFL draft pick Jared Goff of California to Manning. After the camp, Devaney and Manning reconnected, with Manning praising Goff.

"He said, 'Your boy Goff can really throw. I'm glad he was here. But we have a boy down here that put him to shame — this boy at Tulane, Tanner Lee.' I said 'You've got to be kidding me. I know how Goff throws, and you're saying Tanner Lee throws the ball better?' He said it was no comparison. He said, 'You've got to keep your eye on this boy from Tulane.' So that was my first exposure to Tanner Lee.”

We should fire Manning. Errrr wait. Does he work here?

We are paying Devaney for talent evaluation of the whole athlete. Manning was simply talking about his arm. Tanner's problem isn't his arm. It is first and foremost about decision making. Second, his movement in the pocket is far from stellar. Third, it is throwing under pressure. You don't simulate those things well at a quarterback camp.

It was stupid of Devaney to publicly pass on the comparison to Goff and ignore how Tanner played at Tulane.

LOL. Manning made the comparison. Devaney told a story. And your pointing to it as evidence that Devaney is falling short. LOL.

Next time we can upgrade our roster at the most important position on the field we should pass.

Trollsa in form this morning.

Upgrade? You seriously think the play of Lee has been an upgrade over what Tommy gave us?

I don't know if my neck will ever be right after three years of SMH over these kinds of posts.

Then what does this have to do with Devany?? Man, you just make no sense.
Ummmmm...he was the primary talent evaluator who shared this comparison with the press explaining why we were bringing Tanner Lee in. So if I'm following you, are you saying Devaney didn't believe this himself but chose to bring in Lee anyway?

I wonder if you're back will ever be OK after all this reaching for something to complain about, sir.
It was Devaney who got the talk going here about how good Lee was. He's not good. Right now he is second in all of college football in INTs. The guy in first has a 100 more pass attempts than Lee.

Wasn't one of BD's jobs to find out how to make sure the team was up and ready for 11am games? That is amazing!

I think he chose to listen to the opinion of an extremely qualified QB evaluator, bought into some of the excuses as to why Lee wasn't great at Tulane and thought his coaches could correct what needed to be corrected. Seems like he made a pretty good educated decision.

LOL. Armstrong graduated genius.

Your initial response to me makes no sense then.
Forgive him. The grandkids have already taken his car keys away from him. His keyboard is the only thing he has left to live for.....um...good thing I don't have any grandkids yet.

Hmm. In response to your comment about spend, spend, spend...I said "Fortunately, we have our new AD and program leadership here to make the right calls. We hope?"
So I'm hoping that our new leadership figures this out. That's all.
