Sean mentioned Bill Busch from Pender. I grew up in Pender I didn't know Bill, but his grandfather and many other businessmen started "Night Baseball" in Pender. Pender' steam was called the Nighthawks. Night Baseball was played in small towns across the state and someone has actually written a book about it. Bill Busch's grandfather worked tirelessly at the ball diamond. Our stadium had dressing rooms and showers for both teams. The dugouts were roofed, had drinking fountains and a phone to the press box. The press box was at the top of the stadium behind home plate. The stadium seats had a roof. Players came from all over and each businesses would hire players for the summer. I think my dad employed the catcher. As a real young my friends and I would chase foul balls that would leave the stadium. We got a dime for retrieving them. I was very young at the time so the older boys usually got them. Anyway, when Bill Busch's name came up I brought back great memories of a much simpler and, in many ways, a happier time.
