I really don't think Banker = Cosgrove yet. And I hope Riley does not have to face changing coordinators. I don't think 3 games is a fair sample to over-react. They should have a chance to recruit and coach. I do think if the defense continued to give up 500 yards per game, Riley might be slow to make coaching changes.

Too early! We knew we were thin at LB and DE coming into the season. Daniel Davie was suppose to be a lock down corner, not the coaches fault. Banderes and Rose-Ivy out and no Gangwich. True freshman playing tells me the previous staff did NOT recruit well at several positions. 3 games does not warrant a Cosgrove tag!

Message 1. Not even worth pointing out how ignorant you are.
Message 1 is not relevant. I have been around this board for years. While it is still early, I am very concerned about the yards given up. Aren't you?

Not directed at me, but I'll answer.

Of course I am!

But I am also concerned that morons in the fan base are already claiming he's the worst coach in the history of Nebraska football (spinner4 after just 1 game) before letting him have more than a few games with an injury laden defense that can't get much continuity under new coaches in a new system when the lineup changes weekly due to the injuries to key players...

Do you really think after three games this is a fair assessment of what Banker can do? McBride used to suck too, if you're old enough to remember...

I just wish people would chill about the coaches and let a season go by before saying such idiotic stuff so soon...

Scheme and personnel. Plain and simple. Completely different scheme for the corners and safeties, who in game 3 went against probably the most speed they will see all year.

Add to it, 2 starting LBs who missed the 2nd game who as I watched the game a 2nd time, they just were not ready for the speed.

You call Banker a Cosgrove equal? Then so are Michigan States D staff and Narducci at Pitt. Same basic scheme. It's is going to take awhile to get the kinks worked out.

Damon Benning said it best on Saturday night. In this defense the corners need to be the best players on field.

Cosgrove was an idiot and Chase Daniel basically called him one, and he deserved it. Banker has shown the ability to adjust, unlike the point Daniel made.

All the coach and player bashing sure helps recruiting. I remember how bad Charlie Mcbride got bashed at times.

Schools are already using our idiot fans against us in recruiting. After 3 goddam games. Even if these idiot trolls get their wish after 3 games and Riley et al somehow geys canned.... these friggin morons have no idea that they are killing the next guys chances. And no mouth-breathers, it aint gonna be Scott Frost.

These new poster seem to be incredibly on point. Plus the negative verbiage like "cronies" is amazingly used by these guy in multiple threads. Kind of like carpet bombing the enemy. Yep, sounds like your typical poster in Norfolk and Beatrice.

I try. I kind of get tired of fact lacking name calling.
Really?
Fact: Nebraska is 105th in the nation in yards allowed per game
Fact: Nebraska is 13th in the Big Ten in yards allowed per game
Fact: Other teams also play new players and have injuries

You forgot this...

Fact: It is only game three.
Fact: All three starting linebackers are injured. (our entire linebacking corp has a total of 5 scholarship players, and three of them are injured... you don't think that has an effect on the team?)
Fact: 10 walk-ons in the two deep. Do other teams have this problem? (Here's a clue... Miami two deep depth chart - 0 walk-ons)
Fact: IT IS ONLY GAME THREE!

Yours truly,

If you read carefully, you will note that I said "Riley's buddy could be his undoing like Callahan/Cosgrove".
I am not calling him another Cosgrove yet. I hope that the defense does get things figured out and plays like most people thought they would before the season. It does bother me that Banker does not have an outstanding record of stingy defenses. If the defense does not improve over the next 2-3 years, do you think Riley would make a change? That is the Cosgrove comparison.

Then maybe you ought to change the thread title from "Banker=Cosgrove" to "Banker could be Cosgrove", because the way the thread title reads, it's pretty hard to interpret any other way...

And if this year 8 for this staff I'd be leading the mob. But it is game 3. You expect everything to be a bed of roses after a coaching change with a completely different change in staff, and a totally different scheme. It does not work that way.

When I found out what type of D we'd run, I was in the minority apparently and expected BYU to give us fits.

News flash for you. Things are rocky when you chang staffs. Saban went 7-6 in year 1 at Bama. Stoops went 7-5 in 1999 at OU. Oh and even in smooth transitions, Frank Solich in year 1 did what TO never did, lost 4.

Watch the replay of Big Red Wrap Up and listen to comments by Ganz and Benning and chill.

How about we let Riley build his team and see how things are in 2 to 3 years??? Then if it's not to your satisfaction you can pick up the pitchfork and storm North Stadium.

BC's undoing wasn't that he hired Cosgrove. His undoing was that he wouldn't jettison Cosgrove when it became clear he couldn't get it done with his players and so forth after a few seasons.

The jury is still out on Banker, but folks nationally aren't going to hang Riley for not making coordinator changes after the third game in year one. And Riley may yet jettison Banker if it comes to that, we don't know yet.

Land Shark, truth be told, all I really read was the thread title, and skimmed the line you put in the box... My bad on that, should have looked closer.

To your point that Banker could be Cosgrove, that possibility absolutely exists... The problem is the board is reeling right now because of the number of Newbies posting about how big a mistake it was to hire Riley and we are gonna be lucky to win 5 or 6 games this year and don't have anything positive to contribute to the board. It gets old, and so you come on board, people see Newbie under your name, and quite frankly, it's open season.

Sorry about that.

The first year IS too early to make changes. I agree. I think Riley is very bright and loyal. I would be interested to know how often he made coordinator/assistant coach changes because of performance.

Thank you. In truth, I am a big fan of Riley and all of his coaches. I hope it does not get to the point of Riley having to change coaches. I think it will help the rest of this year knowing we won't be facing quality passing teams like BYU and Miami. It is the South Alabama yardage that is still a concern.

Fact: 10 walk-ons in the two deep.

There isn't another program in the country that develops all of their players the way Nebraska has over a long period of time. There aren't walk-ons when the pads go on.

Personally I think that MR is smarter then BC when it comes to making changes. I'm not sure the last time I saw this 2 deep so thin. There is more to this then meets the eye.

He wouldn't fire his BFF at Oregon State..what makes you think he would do it here. If push came to shove-he would retire first.

Probably too early to write him off, but he came in with a lot of scrutiny...which isn't good, considering Callahan/Cosgrove situation is still so fresh in people's minds.

MR knows that this is his last hurrah. This is where he leaves his mark. He's a smart man. I have a feeling that he will do what is right for the team. He just comes across that way.

I find it interesting people refer to Cally/ Cosgrove when Bo/ JP was just awful yet almost forgotten.

Are you suggesting that Nebraska with 10 walk ons in the two deep is equal to other top programs in the nation who don't have the same number of walk ons in their two deep? If so, I'm not sure I have seen such hyperbole on this board in... forever!

Seriously, Nebraska does have a reputation of developing walk ons, you are absolutely right. But when was the last time there were 10 of them in Nebraska's two deep? You won't find it, I would imagine. That, my friend, spells trouble. As much as we might develop them, not every walk on we develop equals scholarship players at Ohio State, Alabama, or heck, even Wisconsin or Minnesota.

So what's the problem. In your world, we have two outcomes.

Riley and Banker tear it up, and we are building statues for the men who restored the order.

Banker is a dud, Riley steps aside rather than fire his friend, and we go hire some hot shot guy probably named Scott Frost in 5 years.
