I am very happy he is having a good to great season - this kid has shown nothing but heart while at NU - he has been blasted by Fans and media a like for his decision making and through it all he has worked hard and remained committed to the team and this program

However it ends for him he has been a true warrior

He has really taken to the coaching and it will give him a chance to play in the NFL some day I believe.

Hopefully Saturday was the last we see of Bad Tommy.

Every qb has a terrible throw, now and then. The "bad Tommy" bit is just the narrative announcers have coming into the game, so every time Tommy makes a mistake, they are going to bring up every bad decision the kid has made over his career. He threw one pick, in the closing minute of the second half, in a 2-minute drill situation, and suddenly they're talking about "bad Tommy" for the rest of the game. It's just prepackaged banter used to avoid forming original opinions during the course of the game. Tommy will make more mistakes. The announcers will return to the narrative. And, despite all that, Tommy is one of the best players we have on offense, as he has been for the last couple of years. You take the good with the bad, and there is a lot of good.

Excellent post. I love TA. I think he is a warrior and a great college QB. I hate the "bad Tommy" narrative after he makes a mistake. Even Dan Marino threw pics now and then

we will miss his running next year, for picking up first downs, and making something happen on broken plays. I don't think we will see that again for awhile. the new qb next year will have to be on target a lot.

I be mistaken but I believe Bret Farve was a pretty good N.F.L Q.B. and his his first pass was an INT..just saying.OK I know Tommy ain't Farve.

I see a lot of people who are sad about losing a mobile QB, and I also will miss it as I think some of the best teams in college have QBs who can make plays with their legs, but the good news is that the QBs Riley is bringing in have a proven track record of being on target a lot. I think it will be expected that Nebraska QBs will be completing their passes in the low to mid 60s - something we haven't seen since maybe Joe Ganz.

Edit: Just looked up his senior season stats and Joe Ganz completed 68% of his passes. Wow that kid was good.

that would be nice, it would be nice to have that louisville qb second string, incase the mid 60's don't happen right away. I seen him the other day for the first time and he seems pretty good.

And one of the most durable kids on the roster. He is the Timex of our team - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

I don't know what position he would play in the NFL but it can't be qb. And I love Tommy. But his game is just not suited for the NFL as a QB.

As long as Rex Ryan is an NFL coach, Tommy has a chance.

I agree, to a degree. Riley needs his style of QB before he has a chance of really executing his offense. But, it's not just his QB. He needs a line that consistently protects. Armstrong bailed out his o-line last game. In order for a pro-style QB to have a chance, regardless how good he is, he needs to have protection long enough for his receivers to run their routes. That is a deficiency that Armstrong has covered up at times this year and a whole bunch last year. A slow QB with a better arm would have been toast last year.
That being said, this is my favorite offensive line in a while. They are improving. Hopefully by the time Riley gets his ideal QB, he also has his ideal line.

Again, pro style QB does not mean the QB is statue. Pro style QBs can have mobility. And just because you don't want to use them on designed runs, doesn't mean they can't run.

Never say never. He has a strong arm and has the advantage of having played under center quite a bit in a pro-style offense. Those kind of QBs don't grow on trees. I will be surprised if he doesn't at least get signed as a free agent for training camp and I won't be surprised if he winds up on somebody's practice squad.

Tommy's main problems is his hieght....that's where half his INTs come from...I don't think he even sees the defender that gets the INT....sa,email with screen plays....,he throws high because he's trying to get them over lineman.

I think the issue is more about judgement than height. Under pressure he makes poor decisions at times. He knows the coverage is there but tries to make the play anyways. I'm sure most of the board can agree he should just throw the ball away or tuck and run the ball. I don't think that Tommy is able to go through his progressions before he decides to throw it to a double/triple covered primary or secondary target. I'm one of Tommy's biggest fans, but he is who he is. He is much improved over last year. I give him and the staff credit for that.

You know, I think you're probably spot on. But it's hard to completely say "never" considering Jacoby Brisset started 2 games this year for the Patriots.

I don't think anyone ever doubted that we was a natural leader, a warrior, etc. - it all came down to his decision making.

He has done a MUCH better job with decision making this year, likely due to his own efforts alongside coaching, and it's helped us win games. No doubt about it. Kudos to him. I hope he keeps it up!

That's a good point. Jacoby is, however, 6'4 235 but his senior season threw for 20 TDs with 6 picks and had a 60% pass completion rate.

Tommy's comparisons are 6'1 220, so far this year 9 TDs and 2 interceptions (better ratio and potential to beat Jacoby's numbers) with a 59% pass completion rate.

Outside of the 3 inches and 15 pound difference, one could argue that his numbers are the same or better than Jacoby's.

Didn't T-Mart complete around 63%?

I don't know about Lee but the other two recruits are not QB's that run at all.

Just think if this season's more disciplined Tommy showed up for last Iowa's game. If he only throws 1 pick, hell two picks, we would have won the game. Beathard isn't that great of a QB. What he is is disciplined. We need Tommy to limit his mental mistakes. That will keep us in every game.

Yes he was; and as I remember he would throw about one " what the heck " pass a game. I say this to say you can do that on occasion and still pull through. TA has many quarters at 68% and above. He is shortening his " my way " quarters and it is starting to show. QB's have a great deal of ability; we will still crack for multiple 10-20 yard gains to to keep a D honest when TA ( who can go to the house )has graduated. The coaches have bought in to what TA has shown them - they say so; but what running plays will depend on the qb. With a qb running; its easier to design plays that are deceptive and/or leaving the D
a man short at point of attack. GBR

I am also giving a lot of credit to the coaches this year. They are trying to maximize Tommy's abilities and minimize the risks that he takes. They are clearly playing to his strengths.

I don't know about Lee but the other two recruits are not QB's that run at all.

Martinez was 59.8% career passer. 56 TD 29 INT. something like 1000 attempts

POB in 21 high school games 149 carries 655 yards15 TDs

Gebbia 32 high school games 123 carries 339 yards 12 TDs

No one said they were option QBs but they aren't the statues that Marino or P. Manning were either.

Again having mobility is different than being a running QB.

Edit-

If you watch Washington destroy Stanford you see what I mean about mobility. Browning is by no means a running QB. His career stats are 85 attempts 62 yards. Obviously some of that is sack yardage. But in that Stanford game he was moving in the pocket, avoided the rush, forced Stanford defenders to defend for 5-8 seconds and found open receivers. 15 for 21 210 yards and 3 TDs. Efficient passing can open up running game too.

I'm of the opinion that they recognized his strengths last year; however, they were not conformtable with any other QB on the roster so we were very nervous that he would get hurt. This year we feel more comfortable with Ryker and have POB as well. So now we can run him with a little less fear of injury.

I sure hope that is not the case - once we lost to BYU and Miami - alarm bells should have been ringing and holding anything back at that point would be a huge mistake

The Purdue game showed us exactly what we had behind Tommy. It was the right decision.

I most definitely agree! Great QB, great student athlete, great representative of the N. Go Tommy!

The other thing that's important to note (maybe - time will tell I guess) is that this staff isn't completely opposed to running QBs. Remember Wilson, whom they had recruited from Oklahoma... if they are against mobile QBs they never would have recruited him.

Just a thought.
