Arizona St. Hires Herm Edwards

Edwards doesn't strike me as a guy that wants to be micromanaged but that screams micro management.

What are the odds ASU brass are already evaluating for their next head coach when the position inevitably comes open in a few years?

If 2.5 years was the over-under for his time as ASU head coach, I'm not sure I'd take the over.

Was Edwards about to get cut at ESPN and his former agent/now ASU AD do him a favor and gave him this gig?

Looks like the ASU AD got his hands on a thesaurus. Trying to make himself look smart by using a lot of big words.
Those words are pretty standard management terms but it is unusual to see them used in a press release for a coaching hire. I take it to mean that they like their assistants and just wanted new leadership much like a company liking the rank and file executives but feeling that they need a new CEO to get the most out of what they already have. I was never a Herm Edwards fan but hey whatever floats their boat. I think they realized that it was going to be tough to find an upgrade at head coach this cycle so they just wanted new leadership. #Placeholderfornextguy. Heck, Herm may have been talking with their AD weeks ago and told him, hey I like your staff and I can work with them.

Very strange situation for sure with asst coaches no doubt. Obviously limited the coach search and interest

I would have gone all out for Mike Norvell if I was them. He was the assistant head coach there before going to Memphis.

So the OC/DC hires are going to be the most important. Edwards will be out telling every recruit about his days in the NFL. If they get the former right, it could work. Cally had everything right but the DC...

Translation: We have a lot of people in positions of power that want to help coach the football team. We believing in micromanaging to a high degree and don't trust coaches to tie their own shoes.

I thought all coordinator had to be retained in a report earlier after position came available. I might be mistaken. I just remember thinking, good luck with that.

Rich Rodriguez must be loving this hire. Two major college coaches in Arizona, and he's finally the one people will consider normal.

Maybe he can get Diaco on his defensive staff and the tinfoil hat quotes can be doubled.

I think Diaco is already on that staff. Who the hell else would write THAT as an introductory press release? Spectacularly beautiful!

Holy Shite!! OK this is a CIRCUS. I read that press release and thought...man, alot of fancy talk for doing what several schools have done. Put a non-coaching staff around football to help. Alabama in particular leads the way by using former coaches as adviser/consultants (IMHO - it is blatantly getting around the rules on how many assistants you can have....but we can address that some other time). Thing is - at Bama - Saban has iron fist control. As many of you picked up - this sounds like management by committee for every ASU a-hole that wants a say about the football team. Herm just won't have the pull to control it.
And...apparently....he does not know who the Sun Devils are. Or he decided a good Devil joke in the first presser would be a great idea. Giant Bowl of Not Good.

At first I thought this was the surprise, out of left field hire of the year(kind of like us hiring Mike Riley 3 years ago)-something that nobody expected, but made sense on some level. Now this is just downright bizarre, maybe one of the strangest hires ever coupled with all of that "New Leadership Model" mumbo jumbo. It's so strange to make you think it could work-though I'd still bet on it failing miserably and them having to look for a coach again in the next few years.
