AJ Bush

Interestingly enough, Mike Leach had a recent interview where he was talking about qb accuracy. This is a little excerpt from the article:

"Over the years, Leach has learned one of the most important things quarterbacks need that can’t be taught is accuracy."

A strong arm and athleticism are great things for a qb to have, but they don't make a great passing qb, at least according to Mike Leach. Mike Riley's offense needs an accurate qb.

If everyone is healthy going into the season, redshirting POB is the only answer. Anything to the contrary is just flat out dumb and an incredible waste of a year of eligibility.

So in reality, Riley's public statement today that Bush is battling for third string is really him asking "is Bush good enough that we can be comfortable red shirting POB?"

Personally, I hope OBrien does not redshirt and gets some meaningful reps this year

Hell we rarely get #2 any work and you think #3 will?

Best of luck to the kid ... wish this would have got sorted prior to fall camp

POB can still red shirt depending on how the season goes
Fyfe can get all the mop up duty assuming there are no injuries

it would be nice to maintain 2 years of separation between Lee and POB -- if POB can't beat out Lee then he is a senior before Lee is out of eligibility

Still want POB to redshirt. No sense burning it if you don't have to. Can still practice.

If redshirting, can POB travel and suite up if needed? We need to travel with more than 2 QBs. Unless Darlington is de-facto 3rd QB on the road, but that sounds like a terrible idea.

Redshirts can travel, just not play. Of course, most redshirts don't travel, but it's about playing in the game that ends your redshirt, not just being on the travel squad.

Redshirt status has no official meaning until the season is over. That's when it becomes a redshirt year.

These guys can practice, take coaching, travel, suit up for every game and stand prepared to go in at any time. Of course, if they do go in for even one play the redshirt is over.

Thanks for the replies. That makes sense as to why they would let AJ go. If POB beat him out, he can be the third string guy and still redshirt, barring an emergency/disaster.

“I loved every minute of it,” Bush said. “I loved every minute of it. I loved the Bone Yard. I want to make a shout out to the Bone Yard. I love my teammates and my closest teammates know who they are. I love every teammate and all the coaches and everything.”

Some folks could learn from this young man about how to exit on the high road.

Very classy. Best wishes and good luck to the young man.

Uh; isn't this like saying a gymnast is best if they have good balance? A batter may hit the ball better if he improves his hand-eye coordination? Would more accurate qb's start to be sorted in recruiting by Rival's star system ? Lets make a genius ?

Many think that think of Leach as god since he throws the ball a lot. He also shoots off his mouth a lot. I let you guess what I think he's the expert at.

Yeah, it was clear almost from the start this wasn't the right offensive system for AJ. However, he gave it his best, and the coaches praised him for his improvement. I expect he'll find the right system for his athleticism, and will do well. His work improving his passing will only help him at his next stop. Just tossing this out, but he seemed like he'd fit in at K-State if he wants to transfer to another Division 1 school. Or if he goes back to Georgia, then Georgia Southern would be a good fit for his skills. I don't know of the QB depth chart at either of those schools, but he seems to fit their systems.

AJ has been a class act at Nebraska. Seems like he's leaving the right way as well.

He needs to go FCS. Best of luck to him. POB can still redshirt and hopefully will.

POB can travel and still redshirt but Darlington will already be on the travel squad as well and I would rather see Darlington play QB in a pinch than POB. Why burn a year when you have a guy that knows the offense well from both the QB and WR position? Darlington throws a nice ball and I would be more comfortable with him coming in the game than POB at this point in his career and WAY more comfortable with him at QB than Bush.

Totally onboard with that. I simply don't want to burn POB shirt unless absolutely necessary. And by necessary I don't mean because we are in panic mode. It's time NU got back to building depth. That's what always made us great.

We got a lot of peeps worrying just about this year. I'm thinking down the road. I don't want to keep on this "We have only one good QB" mode. I want us to develop depth at all positions. That way when shiz happens, as we've seen this week on the O-line, we just plug n' play. No guarantees, but it's a lot better than kiss half the season goodbye due to poor player management by the previous staff. I'm tired of it and so should everyone else.

QB depth gets a little iffy with Bush leaving but I keep remembering some of the really nice throws Darlington had about 15 months ago in that spring game. He seemed to go through his progressions and find the open guy so I'm hoping that in an emergency he could be a viable option. I thought he looked like our best QB in that scrimmage. I know he doesn't have the big arm that Langsdorf likes but I think he could manage a game in a pinch.

Well let's hope it doesn't come down to us needing our 4th string quarterback. But if we do I agree, Darlington might be an option if he is medically cleared to play. I assume he is.

I would move Reid Karel back to QB to provide emergency depth ... we are likely to need this emergency 3rd string guy next year as well

if you are down to your third string QB you are pretty much screwed anyway .... I wouldn't burn a redshirt and mortgage the future and throw a true freshman who needs time to develop to the wolves

(and yes I know about Matt Turman and Cardale Jones)

IF it were for more than a game or two I would absolutely play POB IF they thought he was our best option to win. With a whole spring and fall camp under his belt he might be able to handle it. You don't really know what you have until the bullets start flying.

yes, agreed, if it is going to be several games then so be it ... just wouldn't do it for a half or a quarter

I agree with the notion that you don't really know until the bullets start flying with the caveat being that if a kid struggles under fake fire in practice they rarely thrive and getter better when the ammo is live in a real game ... the more common scenario is to look great in practice and wilt in real game situations

plus, remember what happened after we pulled Beck's redshirt in an emergency .. the kid was never the same .. Callahan would still be here and we would be competing for national championships had we just given the kid time to develop Winking

Callahan was doomed from the minute TO lost that election. The campaign to oust Pederson and Callahan was in full swing early in that last season. No way Callahan had survived. Beck was never going to develop no matter how much time we gave him I'm afraid. All pulling the shirt did was let us find out earlier IMO. Some guys are gamers others not so much.

Agree with you about Beck. Disagree about Callahan. Had he won more games he would have stayed. And his main problem was not his offense, but the crappy defense. Osborne admitted as much when he hired Bo to fix the defense while ordering Bo to keep Watson.
