Abandoning the run

You have to be able to run the ball when you want to, not when they allow you to. This is a much different game if we have run the ball 42 times as opposed to 42 passes. Eventually, you take away the defensive line's will to be there.

Don't want to hear the line sucks. Don't want to hear the passes are there and tommy needs to check down. Bottomline to me is that langs refuses to stick with the run and it's costing us games.

Only 2 jano carries. Only 1 jet sweep. Only 1 option, which resulted in a touchdown.

Do you even watch the games? We averaged 2.2 yards/carry. Our OLine hasn't been consistent the entire year.

Why did you feel the need to post this again? You made the same post 30 minutes ago. You were wrong then, you're wrong now.

If anything, their defensive line took away our offensive line's will to be there. Go back and watch the tape.

38 carries for 82 yards. Why don't you try actually watching the game before you post nonsense

No, I'm still right. You go watch the tape and see how often we had numbers to run and didn't take it. Go see why plays broke down and how they could have fixed it.

Throwing 50 times was also never going to work and yet we still chased that white rabbit.

48 throws on a day when your defense was playing the best it had all year, is an embarrassment.

I'll write this again too. 2 jano runs and 1 jet sweep. No creativity, no adaptation, no commitment to winning the line of scrimmage.

I'd rather commit to run vs. a ridiculous passing game that doesn't fit our personnel.

Just one thing wrong with your statement.

When the DL is eating your lunch, you are probably not the one doing the wearing down. On 2015 Nebraska.

Commence with your 1994 NU narratives now.

Umm...we ran the ball 38 times. We didn't abandon it. We weren't effective doing it. While I agree that we should want an effective running game, it wasn't as though the coaches didn't commit to it. They very clearly did.

Indeed, 38 carries is a lot of carries to get jack squazzle.

Doesn't fit our personnel? Yes, we have issues at QB, but we have arguably the best receiving corps in the B10. The fact that they couldn't run it doesn't mean they didn't commit to it. Did you actually watch the game?

How did they commit to the run if they had as many or more passes as running attempts? Sounds like they again committed to a "balanced attack."

Yes it is. The argument could be made that we should have thrown more. That said, I think we're more successful running if we run out of power more often.

Was the run not working, or was it how we tried to run? Honest question?

First half we had 2nd and 2. We had shown Jano and Cross in the backfield earlier and converted. But we ran Newby wide. Then passed, didn't convert.

I think we are too cute at times with how we try to run.

We did not abandon it we just don't play the best running backs. In the pro style system blocking is more important

They averaged 2.2 yards a carry. Please tell me how continuing to run late in the game would help the cause. At that point it is futile. If we're up and we're wearing them down then sure, pound it. We were down and needed a score and we clearly weren't wearing them down. Continuing to run at that point is basically throwing in the towel. Christ. You act like a balanced attack is a dirty word.

Because you have to judge as you go. It was pretty clear at every point of the game when we ran the ball today, we weren't getting a whole heck out of it save for a few nice efforts inside by Cross. TA made a couple nice plays with guys in the backfield on designed runs.

The only reason we should have run for 55/70 some plays today, is if we wanted to deduct from our total offense in order to satisfy some fan feel good requirement.

Northwestern's defense was on the field all day and still stronger against the UNL OL down the stretch. Up until the 4th Quarter, I thought UNL had the edge at the LOS. Calling more running plays was not going to get the job done against a good run defense.

we pass block, we don't run block like we used to. thats why we never wear anyone out. anymore.
If your going to be pass happy, you need a pass happy qb. not an option qb.
if we had a joe montant qb, we would be undefeated right now.
but then we haven't played many tough teams

Then re-watch the game and focus on the OL. They were manhandled all day long.

That tells me all I need to know about Mike Cavanaugh. His OLine just got dominated by a defensive line that got destroyed by both Michigan and Iowa. Friend of Milt T. or not, that stiff needs to go.

Just stop already. You have no effing idea what you're talking about.

The best part of our team is our receiving corps or DLine. We just don't have a consistent QB to deliver the ball. Nothing about our run game warrants beating our head against the wall by continuing to run when we can't open any holes.

You are stupid.

LOL, how do I respond to that? "Oh yeah, well you're a ninnie."

Sorry you don't see it, but the man isn't a good OLine coach. Iowa ran for 294 yards against that same Northwestern front...with a handful of 2-stars and walkons? Go look it up.

So post an analysis of Iowa's OL vs. our crew.

Your an idiot.

Give "you're" a try, professor.

How much analysis is required when we averaged 2.2 yards a carry, and Iowa averaged 5.8 against the same defense? It's been this way nearly every game this year. We can't run the ball when we need to.

At the start of the year I would have said that we aren't getting to the 2nd level of defenders (LBs), but today, we didn't get past the first level of defenders from what I saw.

Iowa has a better line.

Yes, they most certainly do. And they generally do it with less. They do have better ranked players than they normally do, but our OLine problems aren't due to a lack of talent.

2.2. yds per carry is not a glowing stat for running the ball more.
