...when we were looking for a coach once upon a time. He may not have been able to move past the Florida's, Alabama's, and LSU's during his tenure in Georgia but Holy Moses the guy can recruit. He has 19 recruits with 15 of them four stars and one five star. I know the southeast has tons of players but he is taking in a huge haul.

The ACC just may have stolen the title of best conference in America from the SEC.

What makes you think he was interested in coming to Nebraska?

I wasn't on this board, but most other places I frequented weren't really against him as a coach just that he was not a realistic option. He was still at Georgia, coming off a 10-3 season and a top 10 season. The only tie was that he was born in Omaha and lived there until 2nd grade.

It wasn't just here but among many fans. He just never really broke through to championships in Georgia. Plus, we had just played them twice in bowls the previous two years and essentially broke even. Many felt he would keep us on the same plane as Pelini.

I don't know if he would have been interested here but everyone knew that he and the natives in Georgia were restless and a change was coming at some point.

My two cents...

I don't recall many here thinking he was another Pelini in terms of wins and losses... I would have loved to give him a shot here. To me, had he been offerred (and accepted) the position, it would have been an immediate upgrade over Bo. He would have improved recruiting with his connections in the south, and duking it out with the Iowas, Minnesotas and Wisconsins would have been much easier than the SEC for him. He could have been a great hire...

Maybe there are many who thought otherwise though, I don't know.

To me he was just another one of the "Big name candidates" that was thrown out there by the fans as someone they would like to see coaching here.

The only name I heard, who was interested, was Dan Mullen. But I really don't know that he was a long term solution, or a guy looking to come in for a couple of years then bolt

He didn't recruit well at Georgia.

Keep up the consistent work

"Stop annoying me starving child in Kenya with your prayers, the Huskers are playing Arkansas State today." - God probably

I personally pray to Odin on game day. I figure I want the strength of the old Viking warriors in Valhalla helping my team.
Dude, you have to pray to the Hindu Gods now that we're gonna be passing more. All those arms = more receptions.

He wouldn't be outperforming our current staff at recruiting.

Current means with williamses, parrella, Bray...

I know, ambitious words by steelclaw... I think what he is saying is the coaches are doing a great job with recruiting this year.

Richt great? Gotta see the finish. Tough to say that when he already has a stockpile at Miami like he does.

He didn't recruit well at Georgia.

2015 - 6th (ranked class)
2014 - 7th
2013 - 12th
2012 - 12th
2011 - 5th
2010 -15th
2009 - 6th
2008 - 7th
2007 - 9th
2006 - 4th

His 2016 class at UGA was amazing before he was fired and finished the 2016 Miami class off greatly. Jacob Eason was going to flip to Miami after the firing. Early enrollment saved him from doing so.

You can say a lot of things about Richt but "didn't recruit well at Georgia" is not one of them.

He recruited just fine. And have a look at the class he is putting togather this year. Would he do well at a place like NU? I don't know. It's tough to say if any of those SEC guys could.

All of that is a moot point though. He's at his Alma Mater now. So, he'll either succeed and never leave, or fail and never coach a top tier school again. He will never again be an option for the Huskers again.

Georgia was the MOST underachieving program in the nation under Richt. Why the hell are people so enamored with him?!?!?! Some crappy Nebraska teams hung with those Georgia teams and even won one of them. He is NOT a good head coach!

11 (*ELEVEN*!!) top ten recruiting classes with a good number of them being top 5. Yet, year in and year out, NOTHING to show for it and yet, here we are again, people fawning over him. Why?!?! If you can't win with that kind of talent, you are NOT a good head coach and it's why he was fired!

Richt may very well land nothing but top 10 or top 5 recruiting classes at Miami, but how is that any different than what he did at Georgia?? Winning takes more than talent, otherwise USC, Oklahoma, LSU, Texas, FSU, Georgia, Florida, etc. would NEVER have a down year, let alone entire down decades.
Unless Richt learned the hard way from being fired from Georgia and changes the way he approaches football, he will have the same results as he did at Georgia.

I agree in part, but keep in mind most of his losses came at the hands of LSU, Alabama, Auburn, etc, who are top recruiting teams as well.

Six 4 or more loss seasons. Alabama can only account for 1 of those losses and many of the times he lost to LSU, Florida, etc. Georgia was the higher ranked team. Richt was losing to Vandy, Kentucky, Tennessee, and others. Rickt also got blown out in many games. When your incredibly talent laden team is getting curb-stomped by a 6 loss Tennessee team or in a year that you're suppose to be a NC contender and you lose multiple games to unranked opponents, there is a major issue. He just isn't a good coach.

This was the consensus among many Husker fans when we were looking...but it would be nice to recruit like that.

I'm not denying Richt is a great recruiter, but all but 2 of those recruits are in-state players. When you have that kind of talent in-state, you better be able to recruit well.

Well I see the nit wits know who they are as they responded in kind. I'm glad you posted the rankings. It shows Richt indeed did not recruit as well as he should have. With all the tremendous talent within 500 miles of Athens, Georgia should be in the top 5 every year. This just shows Richt underachieved in recruiting!

And by going to Miami, he's at an even better place to recruit. I'm not surprised by the results he's getting. Hopefully, he'll have better luck in the ACC.

540 is exactly right. His teams always underacheived. Every year there was hype and then letdowns. It was the perfect example of how recruiting is not everything, its only a part. Who cares how good your recruiting classes are, they dont give trophies for that.
Maybe he has learned or maybe he has a different staff and he will get it done at Miami? Hes a good guy and I wish him well.

The term "always a bridesmaid, but never a bride" is not sexy, nor is it a good term to describe u as a coach...which fits Richt perfectly.
