With 8 scholarships available for the men's football team at the University of Nebraska, I was curious as to how these spots could have been filled over the past 2-3 years and by who. The 2017 class had to academic casualties in Blades (CB) and Deontre Watts (NG).
The 2016 class eventually lost Greg Simmons (LB) and Derrion Grim (WR) for different reasons / non-academic (if I recall correctly).
In 2015 the Huskers signed, but then lost Jordan Stevenson (RB), Adrienne Talan (LB), and Lavan Alston (WR).
In the 2017 class the Huskers were in the running for signing Andrew Van Ginkel (OLB / Cat?), who eventually signed with Wisconsin.
That is 8 players (8 scholarships short) over the past 3 recruiting classes that were either signed with NU (7) or in the running for (1).
I'm sure there were other recruits that Nebraska was in on that could have had an immediate impact at their position (Foster Sarrell, OT, Chuck Filiaga, OT). Now there is no guarantee these players would have become valuable / great players for the team, but theyre were at positions that Nebraska could have benefited from the depth they would have provided and their skills would have complimented the talent already on the team.
So, being 8 scholarship players short at this point in the re-stocking and the re-building process has the downside of missing out on 8 quality players that would likely have had a large impact on the offense and defense this year. The positive side of missing out on 8 scholarship players means that 8 hard working walk-on players will earn a scholarship for the season for busting their butts to fulfill a dream.
