4-star Florida WR Jacory Barney is N!!

Today was a lousy day for Miami Hurricanes recruiting. Losing a Miami Public School player to the Nebraska Cornhuskers though?

That was unexpected.

That’s also what just happened when Jacory Barney announced his intentions to head off to Lincoln, Neb. and play for the Cornhuskers, via Rivals Instagram Live.

So, how does that happen? How does a school with UM’s wide receiver tradition, as well as proximity to Miami Palmetto High School, lose a prime wide receiver prospect to the Cornhuskers?

For one, Nebraska prioritized Barney far earlier. Miami simply went after other prospects with far more vigor. Next, do not discount what head coach Matt Rhule has accomplished prior to taking over at Nebraska.

He completely turned around a Baylor team that was in shambles, then headed off to the NFL to coach the Carolina Panthers. That was likely a help to Rhule and his staff overall.

In the end, the loss of Barney still stings for Mario Cristobal and Miami’s recruiting efforts. There’s a long way to go before National Signing Day, but some good news would help to brighten spirits for bewildered UM fans right now.

A top South Florida prospect opted for the Big 10 instead of staying close to home.
Miami Palmetto standout Jacory Barney Jr. committed to Nebraska on Saturday night, announcing his decision on his Instagram account.
Barney is rated a four-star prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings, and he is listed as the No. 34 athlete and No. 418 player in the 2024 class. He chose Nebraska over offers Miami and West Virginia, among others.
The Miami Palmetto star played all over the Panthers’ offense, taking snaps at wide receiver, running back and quarterback. He primarily played wide receiver, alongside current Hurricanes freshman Robby Washington. Last season, Barney had 37 catches for 559 yards and four touchdowns.

Barney also rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and he completed 17 of 23 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns.
Nebraska has been surging on the recruiting trail lately. Under new coach Matt Rhule, the Cornhuskers are ranked inside 247Sports’ top 15 2024 classes. Barney is not the first South Floridian to join the class. Miami Columbus linebacker and Hurricanes legacy Willis McGahee IV, the son of former UM star Willis McGahee, is also committed to Nebraska.

I wonder if a big NIL bag persuaded him to come over.
I don’t know but I bet if he got anything it’s not a penny more than either of the Bellevue West kids will get. This staff doesn’t seem like the type to get into bidding wars for players.

He shouldn't be....this wasn't a position of need at this point either.

Wow. Every crystal ball was for Miami as of last night… Eek Eek
Happy to see this but on the other hand it is hard to not remember how poorly the Huskers have fared in the past with South Florida athletes. Lets hope something changes in that regard. Fly in some fresh seafood or whatever to make these guys feel more like at home, LOL!

I don’t think NU has fared poorly with Florida recruits, it’s Frost who failed with basically all recruits, including Florida.

I’m sure weather has a bit to do with it. But I don’t think that’s a huge deal by itself. If you’re far away from home and you deal with that, along with a dysfunctional culture and LOSING, then it’s Why the Hell am I here.
If you have a great culture (Family atmosphere, work hard = major success and praise) and WINNING, weather becomes much less of a factor.

Yeah, but now we have an adult in charge of the culture, current ties to the NFL, NIL, and county scholarships. No other program has all those benefits.
