2025 OL is concerning

Yeah, that’s a good candidate. Maybe Knaak?

But taking the best OL we can get in the portal is a must. We won’t beat out teams for players but we need a seasoned OL
Knaak is the #2 left guard. Next year shapes up to have third year players at tackle and center, with fourth and fifth year guys at guard. Gottula, Lutovsky and Evans all will have started multiple games. I’m sure they’ll kick some tires in the portal, but the guys who will start next year will have already been starters or have played in a number of games.

I want you guys to Google Alabama's, Georgia's and Nebraska's o-line coach and tell me what's different in their coaching experience on wikipedia. Just curious.

I keep hearing we've got a "young" team but we've got a lot of experience across the team. Defense will lose a lot. Our OL has a lot of young guys, but they're inexperienced. They'll just have to step up. That's college football for you. I do think we'll have a big gap in numbers on the OL between our 1st and 2nd year players and the upperclassmen. Evans and Lutovsky may be the only experienced upperclassmen we have in 2025 which is scary. I bet they move Evans back to center (unless Sledge is too good to keep off the field). My guess for next year is that it'll be Gunnar, Pyle, Evans, Lutovsky, and another one of the youngsters. Teddy coming back would be a nice surprise but I don't think we can count on it. Brix might be ready to play. Taumua may be healthy and ready to contribute. Seagren may be our next walk-on starter on the OL. There are a lot of youngsters who'll have a chance, but if we can get a transfer offensive tackle who can play I'm sure Nebraska will try to get him.
I like the youth we have on OL. The numbers there look good. It may just be a tough year in 2025 as they gain experience.
I'm actually more concerned about DT where we lose Nash and Robinson. We have a number of young DL who look good, but none seem to have the size and bulk of the those two.

I'm not quite as worried about either line tbh. What happens if I think BOTH lines will get younger and more athletic. I absolutely love Ty Robinson and he will be missed but the kid outta Texas who is redshirting this year will be as good as either him or Nash and more athletic. I also think Vincent will take another step and he fits the same description. Juedy is back I think and Williams and Wallen will be bigger and stronger and ready to fill in for Butler.

I watch other teams play on the DL and I see better athletes. Watch Iowa's guys up front. No reason we can't have similar. Tighten up your technique and let your natural ability show up.

On the OL I just refuse to see some of these guys moving on as a loss.

I think Rhule and Barthel are being stubborn. He says Dowdell paves the way for EJ late. I think if you start with EJ we could sustain drives in the 1st half and pull away. Then bring in Dowdell with the pain.
Our coaches are so stupid.

White plays a lot of guys and that solves depth issues year to year. A few years ago we struggled to field a competent Dline. Now the rotation includes 7 or 8 guys and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of drop off.

Very true and a big name I forgot was this Davis kid. He might start next year.

My biggest reason for EJ is his ability to find yards when there is no hole. If we keep talking about the offensive line struggling on run blocking, that is what you need.

You cannot trust Rahmir running it, and if everything is clogged a battering ram like Dowdell doesn't do much between the 20's. On the carries outside that Dowdell had found success lately, Emmett can run those faster.

I think all that holds EJ back is his pass pro blocking
Vision is a big deal. There are a lot of traits that benefit RBs, but vision and knowing what you can and cannot do well as a runner has got to be at the top of the list. Rahmir needs space. I've never seen a kid get bent back at the line of scrimmage like Rahmir does when someone meets him square at the point of attack. He's a nice backup. Dowdell needs a few steps to get going. He would be much better out of I formation with a fullback. Get Dowdell going sideways and he becomes a very average college RB. Easy to bring down, but if he gets to the edge and plants his foot it's a different story. He should use that stiff arm more often. Emmitt Johnson- tough, vision, great quickness/can make the first guy miss, with more experience he'll be excellent out of the backfield on pass routes. He's the best guy we have. I respect the coaches- obviously they know more than all of us. So there's something that we're missing. But Emmitt has emerged as our best option judging from what has happened on the field.

I think each RB brings something different to the table. Rhamir is really good in space with better straight out speed if he catches a pass in the flat. I did see him have some really tough runs in the 2 early games where he broke some tackles and had some YAC. EJ is just a nice combination of vision, wiggle and a little bit of power. I think the concern with him is that he's not the biggest guy so you probably don't want to pound him to the front seven 15 times per game. Dowdell on the other hand can take and deliver some blows. Some complain about not having a back that has it all but we've got a really nice mix of talent at RB maybe with EJ being the most complete back. When you look back to the glory years we often had that kind of blend of guys. It's been a long time where we had that big back who still had enough wiggle to make guys miss.

I think it is a good mix.

My only question would be the order. Rhule stated using Dowdell to wear down the defense then use EJ late in the game when the holes begin to close slower.

IMO, that is a bit of the opposite of how most do it. Most will use the dynamic backs, then later in the game use the physical backs when everyone is starting to get tired and its demoralizing?

I am of the belief that you need to promote from within to keep the team element and cohesivement of the O-line. If you continue to bring in gap fillers it will destroy this. If you do not have faith in the talent you brought in, find a better talent evaluator. I think there are many that have blinders on because of the past staffs. Trust in the system, the young guys will fill the gaps.

And the truth is Gabe Ervin is about as good as any of those guys. It's just not a good idea to rotate four backs. So there is some depth there. And there's a couple young kids behind them who may become pretty good players down the road.

College rosters are more fluid than ever right now. Show me who we sign in the next 2 cycles and who we get in the portal and I’ll have an opinion on this. We have some promising young players, and if Rhule can keep adding talent via recruiting and the portal, we can be even better IMO. But if coach strikes out in the portal and signs a bunch 5.6 3* recruits… (projects and reaches) I’ll be concerned.

What I think I know, is Rhule and company (especially Knighton) can develop DLinmen and Olinemen. Not totally sold on Donny (thank🙏🏻you for Dylan😍) but the Oline has improved, so I gotta give him some credit as well. My point, I trust Rhule to develop players, if they get the talent we’ll continue to improve. But you can’t turn a show horse into plough horse. Saban, Kirby, Harbaugh and Day don’t win all those games without A list talent.

I'm not buying Gabe Ervin is just as good. I just haven't seen anything from him that equals RJ's pass catching out of the backfield, EJ's wiggle, or DD's thump. Some of it is that I haven't seen that much of him to judge him maybe.

Agreed. I said that he is about as good. I'm nitpicking here but I think he's a pretty good all around back. He's not that bad and the backs ahead of him aren't great, just pretty good. His thing has always been about staying healthy and it's hampered his development. It's also quite possible that the injuries have taken something away from him.
