“Undeniable progress” ….

Tend to think Hoiberg revamped his staff and his recruiting model after last year’s sh*t show of a season — after TA “encouraged” him to do so. New coaching staff has shown some promise in getting a roster / game plan that can compete in the B1G. Walker out early probably cost us a couple wins. Gary and Bandoumel out the past month — and the rest of the season — probably cost us 2-4 wins. Getting to 15-16 wins for the year gets us to the NIT. That is progress worthy of another year. TA probably gives him next season to take another step in the right direction, or gonzo.

And Walker gone next year? Wow could be even worse next year
Eh. I’ll throw him a short rope in that I thought (seriously) we’d have possibly the worst team in Husker history this year, with all the talent we lost. Top 3-4 of our scorers and a LOT of good D… I’ve been surprised this year, a couple times. Maybe 3. They’re better than they should be with the talent we have, IMHO. That said Hoiberg recruited big-time players @ ISU, and had a lot of success. He s not getting the same talent here, and that’s concerning after this much time.

It’s the same problem as our football program. We lack pure talent compared to the conference, and kids just really don’t wanna come here. If we can’t literally BUY THEM, we’re not gonna get that much better, no matter who our coach is.

Anyone think Coach K would’ve done better this year with our players? Really?

Nebraska's strength of schedule ranking is 39. When the calendar turned, it was ranked #30. Not bad, but not exactly Murderer's Row.
And - as ever - propped way way way up by the B1G slurping media

He brought in the talent like he did when he was at ISU. Unfortunately, that talent could work in the Big XII, but not even close to working in the B1G. Hence, the complete revamp in staff and roster.

Coach K would have gotten us 2-3 more wins, just by whining and working the refs! 😀

Kenpom ranks it much more difficult
Even Kenpom puts Nebraska's non-conference SOS at #96. Other sites put the non-conference ranking anywhere from 76 to 270.

So unless you're going to go the Gophers' route and beg out of conference games, I'm not sure there's a whole lot NU could have done to make the schedule easier.

“It’s undeniable the progress that Fred and his staff have made,” Alberts said during a wide-ranging interviews hours before NU tipped off against Michigan. “The staff additions he made, as he recreated his staff, have been really, really good. Our team is really enjoyable to watch.

This team currently ranks in the bottom 3 in the BG10 for the 4th straight year under Hoiberg - who enjoys that? Two of our four conference wins are against the two teams below us in the standings. Trev is pissing on our boots and trying to spin it that its raining. He's prepping everyone that Hoiberg will be back.

How's the saying go? You are what your record is?

2015-16: 16-18
2016-17: 12-19
2017-18: 22-11
2018-19: 19-17
2019-20: 7-25
2020-21: 7-20
2021-22: 10-22
2022-23: 11-13
They've had horrible luck with injuries. If they stay healthy, they could very well have finished with 15 wins. I say give him another year. The team is vastly improved fundamentally although it isn't showing up in the won-loss column. And they've played a difficult schedule. Kenpom has them as the #2 toughest schedule and another metric has them at 5th toughest.

Say waaa. Coach K wouldn't recruit these players. This coach did. There for coaching is the reason for a lack of talent.

we won't be favored to win another game

they need to win 1 more to improve on thier conference record from last year

B1G is as bad as it's been in Hoiberg's tenure here

Lol, yeah maybe…

Your analogy to Big12 v Big10 is spot on, IMO… and the exact same logic has applied to our FB program. There’s just another level of talent in the Big10 that we’re still not yet a part of. Our CONFERENCE is more responsible than any variable, including our Coaching, I think. Not the ONLY variable, just talent within different conferences as an average, but LOOK AT THE SUCCESS we’ve had here vs there. Frank and Bo just weren’t great coaches… and still won games. Put fans in the seats.

You’re correct… Duke was loaded year in and year out. I just don’t think the problem is COACHING here. He did land a 5-star recruit, who went immediately to the NBA. We need a LOT more of this.

Point was that the most legendary coach in the history of NCAA BB wouldn’t ‘MNGA’ (you’ll figure it out). It’s a talent problem. We’ve had phenomenal recruiters before. We don’t/won’t/can’t spend the money. Not at the same level at least… because it doesn’t exist like it does in other D1 programs.

Fortunately we don’t need but a handful of elite athletes on the court. Be way cheaper to build a BB contender than winning FB team in the BiG…

The big 12 has won 2 of the last 3 national titles in hoops

The big ten has won 1 this century

Your argument may be valid - just in the opposite direction (B1G attracts worse players/coaches/everything than the big 12, and on-court success proves it)

I love the posters who blame the athletic director. Fred was a fairly unanimous positive hire amongst experts, fans and major boosters. It was a home run hire. I don’t care one way or another. To Nebraska fans thinking regular NCAA tournament invites and victories are just around the corner with the right coach. Maybe with NIL. But the reality of our whole men’s basketball history deserves a LOL.
Not unanimous. Those of us who didn't care about his Nebraska ties worried about his heart health and the fact he had such poor relationships with players on the Bulls and really flamed out hard. Seeing somebody with health problems struggle with relationships at the NBA level is a bit of a worry. Will he be able to put in the work necessary to build up the worst basketball program in power 5 history? Is he disconnected from the modern college age kid? Will his NBA experience even be valuable since it was such a bad experience? He wasn't better than Tim Miles but was different and that was the mistake and the lesson. Sometimes different isn't better than average. Miles was good enough for the worst program in power 5 history.

The best player Fred has brought here was barely drafted

Far cry from the lottery pick all-american (Royce white) he had at ISU

This post is dead wrong even before your incorrect assertion about conference strength

Kind of like Mike Riley. He was different than Bo Pelini, but being different didn't translate to success.

I actually agree with you, but may not have fully clarified. The talent was geared toward Big XII. It was not NBA talent, just the types of players that don’t win in the B1G. Didn’t mean to insinuate the B1G is a better conference, just different playing styles.

Fred was in on 3 top 25 transfer portal recruits this summer. Until it got to talking about NIL. Scheurmann is getting 400k from Creighton this year. Nebraska didnt offer close to that. It's all about the money. It doesnt matter who the coach is anymore. It's about what we can pay these kids. I talked to a Michigan State booster this past month in Cabo, he said their collectives are giving each Michigan State basketball player that signs and graduates a $1M trust after he graduates. We are going to continue to be cellar dwellars until we can get NIL up to snuff.

Michigan State’s biggest benefactor recently bought the Phoenix suns. He played for Izzo on one of their national champion teams

His worth alone dwarfs our donor pool

Creighton doesn't have any huge Billionaire donor. Yet they are paying way more than we are. I understand Nebraska basketball isnt a priority for most boosters but the idea that we are just one coach away isnt going to change anything. This is entirely about NIL and money and until we get that fixed which I think Trev realizes. We are going to be in the bottom 4 of the B1G. We can fire Fred tomorrow but I have serious doubts that will change anything if our NIL doesnt improve.

We will likely never be a basketball powerhouse, but there is no reason we should be this bad.

Creighton can focus all of their NIL money on a few basketball players as can the entire big east conference without diluting it with football

I think if you are the AD you absolutely have to prioritize football.

We could do both, but I don’t think the average Nebraska fan truly gives a crap about how good the bball team is. Which is going to effect NIL among other things.

Interesting about so-called hard facts on NIL at Creighton and supposedly MSU compared to Nebraska in men’s basketball. We are way behind. But both those programs have much better basketball histories, especially MSU. The thing is with privacy matters, we don’t get facts in public just conjecture. I don’t believe, necessarily, that Creighton and MSU boosters are supplying NIL to men’s basketball athletes much better than Nebraska. Where is the facts?

Since those two programs are historically better than Nebraska can dream about. Those in this thread who espouse our NIL is way behind the Bluejays and Spartans. I want facts. Not guessing and maybe people with agendas that would lead to major change again. Like in coaching. I do know our main problem in basketball is talent compared to our competItion. We are behind. Nothing new. But are we behind in basketball NIL?

IDK and neither does few/some posters without public facts. Honesty and transparency is missing here, just like in politics. We are a close to bottom dweller in men’s basketball. Always have been and the future is murky. Our lack of population and lack of regular all-conference types in men’s basketball and football are the main reasons we haven’t been able to compete in those two sports In the Big Ten.

The Big 10 has states with much more population than Nebraska does. We are the worst. Football has history of overachieving despite this fact. Plus, last century, the state produced more in-state players of national significance for Nebraska. I recently gave to 1890. Their website mentions the sports of football and volleyball. My two favorite Nebraska sports. Those two sports i think nebraska can be competitive nationally. Depending on how fast it evolves and develops, NIL talks about helping baseball and maybe another sport or two.

IDK the numbers for NIL at Nebraska and how it is distributed. But even with our extremely fervent fan base, it seems impossible to fund NIL at national comparable levels in men’s football, basketball, baseball, women’s basketball and volleyball. Plus a few other Nebraska sports.

MSU I think is a sleeping giant with NIL. I don’t know where they currently stand but they have a sneaky big fan base with a lot of power players across the country. I’ve worked on both coasts and I’m always running into MSU alums in surprising places.

As kong pointed out they had a pretty good recruiting class quality wise compared to Michigan who has long been seen as the alpha school.

I definitely read a year or two ago, about two fairly recent MSU graduates who are new billionaires who have a high interest with NIL donations for football. I think one could add one or both support men’s basketball. That is their marquee men’s sport in the MSU sports program.
