Year of Revival

Reports are in that former West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez is going to be hired as the next head coach at West Virginia. With Frost going back to UCF happening as well and with Rutgers getting back on track with Schiano. Maybe what's old can be what's new. I mean North Carolina is replacing one old guy with a championship pedigree with another.

If Ryan Day gets fired at Ohio State, Billy Napier at Florida, and Mike Norvell gets tomahawked in Tallahassee. Maybe Meyer, Spurrier and Fisher get their old offices back.

Lastly if Rhule doesn't get at least 8 wins next year, perhaps recent Hall of Fame Frank Solich gets a call. Maybe USC calls Pete Carroll. Alvarez at Wisconsin, Ferentz at Iowa......scratch that last one.

Did I miss any?

Just watched the 1995 Orange bowl again on Big Ten channel…

Haven’t watched it in a while, but it’s certainly interesting to see how the game has changed. Number one, we got a lot of hits on Costa. I’m not sure if they were what would be considered a late hit now, but certainly you cannot go after the quarterback anymore, like you could back then. Costa was not a great talent actually as well.

Our linebacker play was superior. Ellis and Coleman were outstanding and were shooting the gap continuously. Line play was good and past rush was strong.

Finally, as we all know, Lawrence Phillips was just on another level.

I actually forgot that Miami actually made some bad plays that kept us in the game. I had completely forgotten about that bad snap on the punt. They also had a couple of bad personal fouls. Overall, however, much fewer penalties than there are today and much fewer play stoppages.

This whole thing is so fascinating

Nebraska and many other teams are combing the ranks of 3-4 year players from non-P4 schools who were maybe 5.2 to 5.4 guys out of high school, but have grown and developed into these guys who get selected in the NFL draft in rounds 4-7 and end up being good pro players. The guys from Bowling Green and Fresno are classic examples.

The DT from Missouri is a traditional transfer as he has a coaching connection, but the transfer strategy seems to be a slight shift from just the throw offs from big time programs to adding a number of the best players in the smaller programs. We've had some success with this with Buschini, Toure, Bly Hill (maybe), but it seems that there's more evaluation and emphasis now.
