1781 - The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation.

1790 - The U.S. Congress authorized the first census.

1803 - Ohio became the 17th state.

1815 - Napoleon, having escaped exile in Elba, arrived in Cannes, France, and headed for Paris to begin his “Hundred Days” rule.

1845 - President John Tyler signed a congressional resolution to annex the Republic of Texas.

1864 - Rebecca Lee became the first black woman awarded a medical degree.

1867 - Nebraska became the 37th state.

1872 - Yellowstone became the world's first national park.

1893 - Inventor Nikola Tesla first publicly demonstrated radio during a meeting of the National Electric Light Association in St. Louis by transmitting electromagnetic energy without wires.

1932 - Charles A. Lindbergh Jr., the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh, was kidnapped from the family home near Hopewell, New Jersey. (Remains identified as those of the child were found the following May.)

1945 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt, back from the Yalta Conference, proclaimed the meeting a success as he addressed a joint session of Congress.

1954 - Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire from the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, wounding five congressmen.

1961 - President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps, enlisting men and women for voluntary, unpaid service in developing countries around the world.

1966 - The Soviet space probe Venera 3 impacted the surface of Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to reach another planet; however, Venera was unable to transmit any data, its communications system having failed.

1971 - A bomb went off inside a men's restroom at the U.S. Capitol; the radical group Weather Underground claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn blast.

1974 - Seven people, including former Nixon White House aides H.R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman, former Attorney General John Mitchell and former assistant Attorney General Robert Mardian, were indicted on charges of conspiring to obstruct justice in connection with the Watergate break-in. (These four defendants were convicted in January 1975, although Mardian’s conviction was later reversed.)

1981 - IRA member Bobby Sands began a hunger strike in Maze Prison in Northern Ireland; he would die 65 days later.

2003 - Suspected Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was captured by CIA and Pakistani agents near Islamabad.

2005 - BTK serial killer Dennis Rader was charged in Wichita, Kansas, with 10 counts of first-degree murder. (He later pleaded guilty and received multiple life sentences.)

2005 - A closely divided Supreme Court outlawed the death penalty for juvenile criminals.

2010 - Jay Leno returned as host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”

2012 - Online publisher and conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart died in Los Angeles at age 43.

2012 - Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley signed a measure legalizing same-sex marriage in his state, effective January 2013.

2021 - Twitter said it had begun labeling tweets that included misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines, and that it would use a “strike system” to remove accounts that repeatedly violate its rules.

1941 - Elmer Layden was named the first Commissioner of the NFL.

1942 - Major League Baseball owners decide not to allow players in the military to play for their clubs while home on furlough.

1949 - Heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis announced his retirement as champion. Louis ended his career with a professional record of 66-3-0 that included 52 knockouts and a record 25 title defenses.

1967 - MLB Commissioner William Eckert approves the Baseball Writers Association of America's plan to name a Cy Young Award recipient from both the National and American Leagues.

1969 - Mickey Mantle announced his retirement from baseball.

1969 - Phil Esposito has a goal and assist in Boston Bruins' 8-5 win over NY Rangers to give him 99 points for the season, breaking the NHL record for most points in a season (97) held by Stan Mikita.

1981 - Houston Rockets guard Calvin Murphy misses a free throw in a 102-86 loss in San Antonio, ending his NBA record consecutive free throw streak at 78.

1988 - Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) got his 1,050th assist to become the NHL's all-time assist leader. Gordie Howe had held the record for 26 years.

1993 - The expansion NHL team owned by Disney was named the Mighty Ducks.

1996 - Lenny Wilkens won his 1,000th game as an NBA head coach.

1996 - The Dallas Mavericks set a record when they attempted 44 3-point shots in a game against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

1998 - Pat Riley of the Miami Heat becomes the 5th head coach to record 900 NBA career wins with the Heat's 85-84 win over the New Jersey Nets

2002 - The Vancouver Canucks said that they would bill Ed Belfour (Dallas Stars) for damaging the visiting team's locker room on February 28th. Belfour broke two televisions, a clock and a VCR and damaged the walls of the dressing room after he was pulled during the first period.

2003 - Legendary Mount St. Mary's basketball head coach Jim Phelan wins final game of 49 year career as Mountaineers win 60-56 over Central Connecticut State; Phelan: 830 wins in NCAA record 1,354 games.

2005 - The NHL's board of governors met and emerged fully behind Commissioner Gary Bettman and totally committed to having a season in the fall.

2016 - MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred sends a strong message on the issue of domestic violence; issues a 30-game suspension to NY Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.
