1775 - Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys, along with Col. Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga in New York from the British.

1818 - American patriot Paul Revere died in Boston at age 83.

1863 - Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson died after being accidentally shot by his own troops.

1865 - Confederate President Jefferson Davis was captured by Union forces in Irwinville, Georgia.

1869 - The first transcontinental railroad in the United States was completed with the driving of a ceremonial golden spike in Promontory Summit, Utah.

1924 - J. Edgar Hoover becomes director of the FBI.

1933 - The Nazis staged massive public book burning events in Germany.

1940 - Winston Churchill succeeded Neville Chamberlain as British prime minister.

1941 - Adolf Hitler's deputy, Rudolf Hess, parachuted into Scotland on what he claimed was a peace mission. (Hess ended up serving a life sentence at Spandau Prison until 1987, when he apparently committed suicide at age 93.)

1940 - During World War II, German forces began invading the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and France.

1994 - Nelson Mandela is sworn in as South Africa's first black president.

1994 - Illinois executed serial killer John Wayne Gacy for the murders of 33 young men and boys.

1995 - An elevator accident in Orkney, South Africa killed 104 miners.

2002 - A tense 39-day standoff between Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem ended with 13 suspected militants flown into European exile and 26 released into the Gaza Strip.

2013 - American government scientists said worldwide levels of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas blamed for global warming, had hit a milestone, reaching an amount never before encountered by humans.

2022 - Russia pummeled the vital Ukrainian port of Odesa in an apparent effort to disrupt supply lines and Western weapons shipments critical to the defense of the capital, Kyiv.

2023 - Rep. George Santos, the New York Republican infamous for fabricating his life story, was indicted on charges that he duped donors, stole from his campaign and lied to Congress about being a millionaire.

1969 - The National and American Football Leagues announced their plans to merge for the 1970-71 season.

1970 - Bobby Orr (Boston Bruins) scored a goal to win Game 4, and the Stanley Cup, over the St. Louis Blues. A statue was later created by Harry Weber that depicted Orr flying through the air immediately after scoring the goal.

1973 - The New York Knicks defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win the NBA championship.

1973 - The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup.

1974 - The New York Nets defeat the Utah Stars in five games to win the ABA championship.

1993 - Bill Walton is inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

2001 - Peter Forsberg (Colorado Avalanche) had his spleen removed in an emergency operation. The operation took place just hours after the Avalanche eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

2002 - The Anaheim Angels defeat the Chicago White Sox 19-0, and join the 1923 Cleveland Indians, 1939 New York Yankees and 1950 Boston Red Sox as the only teams in MLB history to win two games by 19 or more runs in a single season.

2014 - Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, becoming the first openly gay player drafted by a pro football team.

2018 - Rafael Nadal breaks John McEnroe's record for successive set wins in a single surface with his 49th straight win on clay.

2022 - Tom Brady agrees to a record 10-year, $375 million contract to be Fox Sports' lead analyst when he decides to retire from playing football, surpassing the $303 million he earned in his NFL playing career.

2023 - Boston Red Sox reliever Kenley Jansen becomes the seventh pitcher in MLB history to record 400 career saves.
