TO doesn’t want you gambling

I’m a bit of a libertarian but damn gambling and casinos seem to wreck a lot of families. I had a friend that eventually committed suicide because of a gambling addiction and bankruptcy. Gambling seems to prey on the weakest.
Cars kill people and ruin lives as well. Therefore, cars should be illegal.

I'm pretty sure I've read posts where you discuss enjoying a good liquor now and again............

No idea where I'm going with this. ;)

99% of all people that step foot in a casino never have an issue.
99% of people that a buy booze never have an issue.
99% of people that use (you know what I am talking about) never have an issue
Having just spent a couple of hours at a casino I doubt your assertion that 99% don’t have a problem.

Always interesting to debate the point where individual freedoms should be curtailed in order to protect society as a whole

Yep. Lots of hourly wage earners in there blowing their paychecks on slot machines they have virtually no chance of winning on. Whatever.
How do you know that? How do you know what financial status these people are? How do you know anything about any of them? Seems like you are basing your opinion of these people with assumptions.

Exactly. When I was in the banking world, our largest depositor was a dude who dressed like a ranch hand. Then you look at current members of congress and roughly 1 out of 5 have credit so bad they can’t get a bank loan.

Do you have a link for the congressional credit scores? I'm interested in reading about it and a Google search didn't reveal much, just stuff about that young rep from Florida.

Yes because as of right now nobody is betting on Nebraska sports. nobody, including me, for sure not me. ya definently not me or anybody else i know. nope

The powers behind legalized gambling are not the least motivated by wanting you to have a good time. They seek to separate mouth breathers from their money. So go on and hand over your paycheck but it would be appreciated if you would wipe off the slobber first.
Casinos don't offer 'gambling, they offer a programmed evisceration of money.
Now the almost always bad libertarian argument is let them do what they want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. That's either a simplistic fantasy or outright lie.
Casinos exist for profit. Governments smell the money and get in bed. They then sell you the tax revenue bit and market it as a 'for the children' nonsense, insinuating it'll go for school funding.
However, governments have voracious appetites, like an alligator, the more you give them the hungrier they get. Like feeding an alligator fresh meet. It will become bigger and increase its appetite.
The citizenry of Lincoln is finding this out. We are also left with the problem of rubes who are supposed to be supporting their families blowing it all away and burdening social services.
So please don't tell me about it not affecting my life.

Ok. Then get rid of alcohol too. I can make all the same arguments regarding alcohol x 10. Alcohol literally kills people. Kills a lot of innocent people. The government absolutely loves the tax revenue. Businesses absolutely love the revenue. Destroys families.

I love how people always claim they are for small government and personal freedoms, unless it's something they don't like. Such as gambling or weed. Then we get a bunch of reasons why they are different.

Cars should be outlawed too. Look at how many are killed and how many lives are ruined by car crashes.

I am not sure if any group has done a better job of creating these myths about the ills of gambling.

They act like every person in a casino is "spending their paycheck while their kids go hungry"

I would argue that most people at the casinos are just like me, they go with some friends, have some fun, blow like 40-60 dollars and then go home.

This argument has been repeated several times on this thread.
Your argument is that alcohol causes a host of bad societal problems, therefore, it justifies adding another avenue for more societal problems.

Actually, that is exactly what I'm saying. Another way to put it is quit telling me what to do.

Another way to put it is what's the difference? Shocking news here but people gamble and use cannabis whether it's legal or not. Bookies. Basement poker games. Then we have things that people kind of refuse to look at as gambling such as the lottery. Keno. Pull-tabs. It's almost like some people are going to find a way to waste money.

It's shocking to me that the Prohibition Era is idolized for what an epic failure banning alcohol was but a lot of people refuse to acknowledge the same thing has happened with weed.

I say we swap alcohol for weed and put alcohol up on the schedule 1 list where it really does belong.

.Imagine that. People doing business as casinos want to make money. Wondering aloud how that is different from any business.

What percentage of gamblers have a gambling problem?

Gambling disorder affects about 1% of Americans who can't stop, despite the consequences. Gambling covers more than a trip to the casino or an illicit poker game – it includes lotteries, online poker, and sports betting, and there's a debate over whether it also includes daily fantasy sports leagues.

I don't agree with Osborne on this, but at least he's at the Capitol on his own time, expressing his honest opinion. Most of the "grassroots" opposition to expanded gambling in Nebraska comes from hypocrites being paid by the companies that run the Council Bluffs casinos.

Same thing happens in Colorado. Any time there's a ballot issue proposing expanded gambling, the cartel that runs the existing casinos pays a bunch of fake soccer moms to run around telling us how gambling will destroy our quality of life... unless we do our gambling in Blackhawk or Central City, where it's okay.
Went to Central City a few times as a kid. I liked that place before the casinos took it over

I had a series 7 security license and worked for a large national brokerage for a while. One of our biggest clients always drove a 20+ year old Ford LTD and dressed like Mr Ziffle on Green Acres. Dude had hundreds of thousands of dollars at every broker in town and owned thousands of acres of land debt free. I guarantee you the chain smoking tattooed 40 something’s playing the slots in Sioux City did not belong in his demographic.

LINCOLN — Former Husker coach Tom Osborne urged lawmakers Monday not to allow betting on Husker home football games and other in-state matches played by Nebraska college and university teams.
The national championship coach and staunch gambling opponent warned that the expansion of sports betting is transforming college sports contests into gambling events and the more money people spend on gambling, the more pressure gets put on coaches and players.
“I would ask that you at least protect our Nebraska athletes,” Osborne said in a letter to members of the General Affairs Committee.

This is the same guy that brought us Scott Frost. College football isn’t at rigged.
I bet I can change his mind...

It is still an assumption, even with your personal guarantee.

Additionally, are you saying only people with multiple $100k brokerage accounts and thousands of debt free acres should be allowed to gamble?

Even chain smoking tattooed 40 somethings have enough discretionary income to play the slots.
