Wow, I was wrong about Riley, this could be the death of Nebraska Football

I can remember watching Husker football since the 1981 season. Seen a lot of ups and downs. I expect big things just like everyone else but this post is ridiculous! Even though we're 1-2 (sliver away from 3-0) I'm very excited about our future under this staff. We'll keep getting better every week and win the West!!! Go to bed ya whiners!
agree huge upside

No this is the big time. You don't give a new staff a season long pass. They were hired to start winning day one.
You're the dumb one if you think the AD should pay millions of dollars to a new staff and not expect them to win from day one.
Of course the expectation is to win from day one... But the expectation also has to be realistic. You can expect to win every game, but how many teams each year win every game? Even the national champion last year didn't do that... Guess that makes you the dumb one...

Yet another worthless fan that doesn't have the decency or the balls to come back and admit that things weren't as bad as you made them out to be. Good thing for you that we still lost or you'd really look like an idiot.

Riley may not be the answer. I just find it odd that people are writing him off after three games despite letting Bo have six straight seasons of four losses, no significant trophies aside from the mythical #9wins trophy, few big wins against good opponents, lots of blowouts, and comebacks against average-to-mediocre teams.

Agree, I'm optimistic about this team. BYU is clearly better than many wanna be experts on here give them credit for and Miami might just be pretty good as well.

The tough losses are going to make this team better and seasoned for conference play and I believe NU will win the west because of it.

Wow...so should Saban have been fired his first year? I think he went 6-6 if I remember correctly. Go jump off a bridge

Totally agree OP. Why does a portion of the fan base think BP would be doing any better than what MR and his staff is doing? I think we should give credit to the coaching staff and players for a heck of a come back.

Just got home and watched the gave via DVR. The better team almost blew it and gave it to us. Give the kids credit for an incredible comeback but---showed a lot of heart and I feel for Tommy. However, at the end of the day, this looks like a crappy Callahan coached team. I was trying to stay optimistic about Riley & Co., but we are now officially Oregon St.

Thanks for proving you can outstupid the original post in this thread. Guess you might as well give up now and go find another team because there's no hope. I can't believe some of us were so silly as to think 3 games is too early to be making the kind of judgments you are making. Sometimes I wonder-are people like you really as stupid and dense as you sound, or do you say this kind of stuff just for entertainment purposes?

Oh I see, in your infinite wisdom you are able to come up with the biggest word in your vocabulary....stupid. And actually used it twice! That is if you count outstupid as one.

That's all you got? Wow. I didn't think you could be any more empty and devoid of content as you were before. "Trying to stay optimistic"-Ha! What a blatant lie.

Ah, is someone a little grumpy this evening? You start with the obligatory insults and then call me a liar? Now there's some optimism for ya'!

Grumpy? Read what you wrote above again, and you tell me that I'm grumpy? I'm not the one giving up on my team and my coach like you are.

Going back to the OP. You could be wrong on two points. At least as I see it, we remain mediocre as the most likely outcome. I'm not trying to be negative or positive, just objective. Our coaching staff's best year was a 10 win season. Change the scenery. Realistically, should we be expecting back to back to back 11 or more winning seasons.

So we don't even give a new coach/staff a season? GD people are dumb.

Wow. Lots of embarrassing posts in this thread. Greatest fans on earth. Nebraska, where the fans treat the opposing team and better than they treat their own team and coaches.

I've been reading this board myself and it seems there are two lessons to be learned from the Husker fans..

#1 - Moral victories are now suddenly to be celebrated.

#2 - The "We will fire you even if you win 9 games because we are Nebraska" mentality still lives in Lincoln.

Myself we lost 2 football games that we could have won whether we're 3-0 or 1-2 at this point regardless of our record were no better of a team if we won those games we have issues and some of those issues come from past recruiting.
Peelini didn't get fired for winning 9 games but the games he lost that mattered in the realm of things and his behavior on the sidelines and to the press. If in 2009 McCoy pass stays in the air longer or doesn't hit a pole Bo still might be around which doesn't mean we wouldn't be 1-2 with him and his terrible staff.

It seems to me that Nebraska fans find themselves between the devil and the deep blue sea this year. They have told themselves for years that even 9 win coaches are not good enough for Nebraska. Now, with this latest firing and hiring, Husker fans are forced to confront the fact that they have a career .500 coach at the helm of a faltering program that doesn't suffer even 9 win coaches gladly. This is a very interesting watch for those of us on the outside looking in.

We Husker fans understand what a transition year looks like. So far I've been pleased with how things are progressing. Everyone wants to win but sometimes it really is about more than winning. If you do things right the winning and losing will work themselves out.

You might realize that, but do you really believe that most of your fellow Huskers do too?

Looks like as good as any thread to vent fustrations...

Why can't those Riley supporters understand....
Those that do not support Riley 100%, are not attacking the man.
But the hiring itself (and possibly the process).
That does not mean people wanted Bo to stay!
Do not bunch the 'non-100%ers' as Bo's supporters.
But as people who wanted more options for Nebraska than just Riley.
But it is, what it is now.
Next game.
Go Big Red!

Regardless who are HC is winning 9 games in a season always been a mainstay for our program 46 out of the last 52 years.

It's going to be harder this season but it still can be attained, just because we fired a 9 win Coach and hired Riley I didn't think he had to win 9 games his first year with changing offense and defense schemes and changing the Peelini mentality to boot.

I was surprised Eichorst hired Riley myself and not my first choice but he is our HC and I behind him and want to give him time to prove he can get the job done in 4-5 years and not just 3 games.

scarletred has the right mindset. Best to judge after the season and assess where the program is then, instead of after just 3 games. Realistically, you want to give a HC 3 years before making any final judgments.

And Oregon State thanks you very much each and every day for hiring away Riley. The problem isn't Riley per se, it's several of his "cronies" that are clearly stuck in the pro set offense (and a reactive defensive scheme). Their job isn't to get kids into the NFL, it's to win games. Good luck the rest of the way.

I will ALWAYS support our program no matter what the record. Doesn't mean you have to like them or agree with them all the time. I am very skeptical about Riley in terms of what he'll ultimately be able to do at NU in the W-L column. He obviously brings integrity and humility back to Lincoln and you have to admire that. I still think his record will more closely resemble his record at OSU, but that doesn't mean I won't be pulling for them every week. In fact, I'm driving in for the Southern Miss game to do just that! GBR!

Rocky Mtn Husker do you live in the Denver Metro? If you do give me a brief rundown of the job market and any other facts you might choose to include. Lived in Littleton a bout 11/2 years ago and am hoping to move back within a year. Again any and all info is deeply appreciated and I am in no hurry TIA.

Nebraska isn't going to be great again regardless of who's coaching. The program has too many inherent disadvantages to be a consistent power in this day and age. The fan base should be learning to adjust long-term expectations by now.

This is exactly why it was a death blow to NU to not hire Paul Johnson at any cost. He runs an offense that is brutal to stop with only one week to prepare, and we can recruit to fit this type of offense much easier than an NFL style. Notre Dame did a decent job this weekend, but they prepare for it two or three times a year. No one else in the BIG runs anything close. It was our only chance to get back to championship level football.

Doubtful.. We'd probably be in the same position. We aren't the power we once were. Times have changed, and until we get a Nick Saban or Urban Meyer type we aren't going to win a title. There are some up and comers, but we need a person who is an ace recruiter as well as a stud coach that might be a touch of a sleezeball. I would sell my soul for Urban right now.

Why not? GT is doing great in the ACC with that offense. We can certainly get as good of players as they do on the offensive side and we are light years ahead of them on the defensive side. We would not be 95 great, but I would settle for 10-11 wins and a chance of upsetting OSU. They were in the ACC championship game, beat Georgia and killed Miss. St in the bowl finishing in the top 10. I would kill for a season like that.

I can't agree more with the statement concerning it is not so much Riley, but his coronies he surrounds himself with. I got vilified on this board last summer when I questioned him hiring his old staff. His old staff is exactly why he was ready to leave his hometown and move to Nebraska. The Oregon State AD wanted him to make changes and Riley did not want to do so. He's our coach and we need to stand behind him and the team, but if this continues it is going to be up to Eichorst to demand Riley gets some good assistants.

Paul Johnson would have been an interesting hire, but he alone would not have been the answer. Pair him (or Riley) with top-drawer talent and you're cooking with gas. A lightning-rod recruiter is the only way we're going to see this ship turn around soon.

Tiger:

Yes, I live in the Denver metro area. How long ago did you live in Littleton? Lot's of changes the last several years. If you lived here before, you know most of this, but here is how I would summarize.

The good: very low unemployment (3.8%) compared to the national averages with Telecommunications, Defense, and Tourism leading the way. Haven't been negatively affected by the recent decline in the energy sector (yet). Of course, still a great climate compared to the Midwest (avg 300 days of sunshine per year) and all of the activities the mountains offer us year round. Very educated and health conscious people, reasonably low State income tax rate (4.63%), reasonable property tax rates (I would suspect lower than NE), professional sports teams (gotta’ love Coors Field!), mass transit is pretty good with the light rail system that is still developing (at the expense of freeway lanes, ugh), Lower Downtown area is still a fun and safe place to go, great bike trails, hiking, world-class skiing, and RED ROCKS the best concert venue ever. I would say reasonably good public education system (Douglas County voucher program ruled unconstitutional by Colorado Supreme Court but hopefully headed to the U.S. Supreme Court---incredible options available in Charter schools right now). Good higher education choices with Metro St., Denver University, CSU, and uh well uh yeah, the CU system. And finally let’s not forget…….Casa Bonita, the Broncos, and legalized marijuana if that’s your thing (personally can’t stand the stuff).

Now the bad: Legalized marijuana, arrogant NU hating CU fans, Peoples Republic of Boulder, C-470 is only 2 lanes most of the way (it would probably be 4 lanes each way in Lincoln!) and causes major traffic headaches, I-70 up to the high country can be a nightmare at times (which is why I own a mountain house), and I-25 also doesn’t have enough lanes. With the influx of new people, real estate prices are high. I’ve heard the medium home price is $261k and that will probably buy you a shack in Aurora (nothing against Aurora). Littleton is now a quite expensive place to live. Any house priced about $350k or less is typically under contract within a week or two, sometimes the same day. Dept. of Transportation does a so-so job of maintaining wintry roads, but roads can get very icy and dangerous at times and very little salt or ice melting chemicals used. DIA is too far from civilization. Fire danger is always there and water is becoming more and more of a concern.

So hopefully I’ve talked you in to moving to Dallas……just kidding, the more the merrier. Best of luck Tiger!
