What positions do we fill

1 - RB
1 - OL
1 - LB
1 - WR
1 - CB
1 - DL

Man I hope we take 17! That way we can get one more CB and one more OL or DL. If we somehow can get to 18 we will take a QB

I think we are being VERY selective on the last WR and CB... I think that may be one of the deciding factors for Goodrich

1- QB
1-RB
1-OT
2- S
1 -CB

Edit - these numbers are fluid because a gamechanger at DLine like Avery or Trout can't be passed up. Similarly if the Moore brothers decide to join the class.

I know several on the board are QB every class, which I can understand, but would that be a position we would bypass if a gamechanger were to want N?

Interesting? You don't think we take a WR over a 2nd safety?

Yeah I don't think we take a QB unless we can get to 18... If Gunnel pulls the trigger for us sooner rather than later. The question on whether we need a QB this class or not will be answered

I would bet this class is closer to 20 than 15.
One would guess you are correct; in that I would guess 20 should be a minimum. At that point you are already "punishing " yourself five scholarships from the 25 number. I believe class rank is from the top twenty in your group; if they care. .... So we could see some silent commits; based on as/if , scholarships become available ? :)GBR

Who's leaving? Outside of Darlington at WR and maybe Newell at DL, all of the other juniors are in line to play or be on the 2-deep. You would then have to go to the Soph class, to find a guy like Barnett if he doesn't play or a Ferguson or Anderson. If all 5 of those guys leave, you would get to 20. i could see maybe 2 leaving but more than that would mean that a huge part of the freshman class is contributing.

The 25 number is irrelevant if you are at 85. Secondly you never reach the 25 when you redshirt large portions of each freshman class

2017 - 11 seniors
2018 - 18 seniors
2019 - 14 seniors
2020 - 18 seniors pending redshirts from 2017 signing class
2021 - 20 seniors pending redshirts from 2017 signing class

Absolutely :) Do you anticipate even further challenges to redshirting or approaching 25 a year under new or likely rules changes ?

Think the idea of fewer redshirts going forward has to strongly reviewed. Don't like burning a year early for a few plays but smaller classes each year just makes for little margin for error in getting top level talent into the program.

There is a thread with my theory on redshirting and how I believe it is a waste of time except in a few instances.

I don't see any further rule changes affecting redshirting.

In my opinion, getting closer to 22-25 is going to take a conscious decision by Riley, to thank the non-contributing RS Seniors for their service and tell them to take their diplomas and move on to the next chapter. That is a conversation that needs to happen as soon as it is realized the player is not contributing during their RS junior year. We have to free up scholarships each year. With Hannon and Johnson leaving after spring ball, we weren't able to use their scholarships for the 2017 signing period. So those 2 scholarships will go unused or given to a deserving walk on for a year. Had the conversation been had in October or November, or even before that, those are two scholarships that could have been used in Feb 2017 instead of Feb 2018

16...maybe 17 if there a few can't pass on guys but that is a stretch IMO
I see 16 (Darlington-Not seeing him being needed next year)
Maybe 17 (Newell-Is he going to see the field?)
A big stretch 18 (transfer that we don't know about)

I have a hard time seeing 20 this year, I think people are dreamin' thinking we get that many

Perhaps we could see a greyshirt or two in this class? Or is there any loopholes in signing a December grad early and having that count against 2017? It seems like there are creative ways to sign more players and this year it would definitely be needed. The staff must capitalize on the positive momentum they have created.

Counting back only works if you aren't up against the 85...guys we are in on aren't gray shirt candidates, they all have picks if major P5 offers

Hey, Tuco, just for us slow people, would you mind walking through why Riley said 15 scholarships only, and how, if at all, we could "over sign" by 2-3 scholarships for gamechanging players/a QB that some argue we don't really need? What is the deal here?

Basically, I'm confused by the low number paired with the idea of "oversigning" by two scholarships being permitted by the Big Ten or NCAA. How many does that mean we actually take? This part gets a little arcane to me, and I know you know your stuff on this topic.

Thanks!

There really is a possibility that we cut or dismiss a few current players on scholarship that dont crack top 2 at position. So if we have a chance to land over limit with recruits this year and there like some top 100 recruit im sure we'd go over the limit and make some cuts to the roster to make open scholly.

The Big Ten allows schools to oversign 3 players and basically get to 88 on signing day, with the understanding that, at least 3 players will not be on scholarship when players report in June/ July. At that time only 85 scholarships can be used.

What Riley is saying is that he isn't expecting any atttrition after this coming season, so he is sticking with the 15 number. I think that is ambitious but he is the one in charge and has a much better knowledge of the situation than I do. I could see a couple leaving.

So right now, we are sitting at 81 scholarships and we have 11 seniors. So if you take the 81-11, you get 70. Then add 15 to get you to 85. If The staff knew of some future attrition, they could sign up to 88 or 18 players in the class, no questions asked. But As I said Riley is indicating that he isn't expecting attrition so he isn't counting on using the 3 oversigning provision.

As far as my comments about numbers being fluid and taking Avery or the Moore twins. I would have to not take an additional safety for Moore and not take a QB for Avery. So my breakdown would be

1 RB
1 WR
1 OT
1 DL
1 S
1 CB

Instead of

1 QB
1 RB
1 OT
2 S
1 CB

I hope that I clearer.

You can oversign by 3, but you have to down to 85 by fall camp. So you better know what 3 are going to be leaving.

I know others disagree with me, but when the Big Ten mandated the 4 year guaranteed scholarships, there are prohibitions on cutting players based solely on on-field performance. To cut these players, the staff would need to have some documented rule that was violated. Be that missing class or curfew etc. but missing too many blocks or throwing too many picks cannot be the reason.

Clouse was pretty clear that Riley didn't see any ethical way (perhaps even a legal way with B1G rules) to cut bait like Saban does.

Names please.

before fall camp, has to be documented with the conf well before then how you will be getting to the number, who is leaving or coming off schollie and why

That is my understanding as well.

Concerning grey shirts, we already have them...walk ons.

Could have been coach speak, but Riley said 15 was a "pretty solid number". I suppose the staff could roll out the depth chart early enough to provide incentive to would be transfers. We'll just have to wait and see.

Doesn't seem there is any way around this not being a small class. Getting to 18 seems to be a stretch. Newell is not on the two deep according to the Land of Ten post-spring projection. The LOT projection also has Khalil over Carlos at DE, with Carlos as backup at NT and DE.

I doubt the SEC has restrictions on anything regarding over signing - as long as you can get to 85 for the NCAA required periods - pretty much anything goes. Any attempt to change it would result in Saban threatening to have you 1st born "disappeared".

Sounds like LOT is a little confused between the brothers because Carlos is playing DE and Khalil is playing NT

The SEC has put in restrictions on over signing and made sure each rule has a loophole so there is a way around it. But at least they are pretending it's all about the kids.

Simply the basis for your statement... You connected and know something that the rest of us wouldn't?

I have a few friends that coach high school football in the Houston area. Word on the street is that he is leaning that way. I am told that if Matt Canada is able to demonstrate that he will be more balanced than Cam Cameron was, they are going to get him.

Balanced you say? Isn't GG interested in winning games?
