Will bowl game be a DC audition for Butler?

I don't know, but I'm curious how they handle coaching the D if Pot Roast should also leave prior to bowl game practices. Maybe we have enough assistants. Maybe it's no big deal for one game.

Matt Rhule hiring the most important open position for the future of the program and basing that on 3 weeks of practice with multiple drop outs on the defensive side of the ball and the game against a mediocre team?

And the guy auditioning only has 1 year of experience as a coordinator and that 1 year was 10 years ago?

Sounds like a Nebraska thing to do

Probably.

Back to the Frost era of trying to outscore teams in ‘25 if he’s the guy.

I don’t know. Most good coaches are still working.
My assumption is that if Butler ends up being our guy then he was not our first choice. If he was choice number 1 - he would be announced. The longer we wait (now that signing day is here) the better we are getting a gamer from someone else. The fact that Butler and Snow haven’t been announced should indicate we are looking elsewhere.

Would Leonhard getting the role allow for him to jump out of the pros immediately?
Yes.

But it’s not 100% necessary.

I agree with you that time is on our side with this one. Plus with the expanded playoffs more teams are likely on lockdown longer into the calendar year.

Who is Notre Dame’s DC? Guessing he likes money

I hope not. Rhule should know already whether Butler is the guy. Basing anything off of a bowl game is fool's gold.
Yes, he already knows and has a plan. He’s either the guy or the back up plan. Won’t be good for us fans if we find out he was the back up plan. He’ll never be good enough in our minds as we like to play what if, all the time.

I actually think that is whom it will be. Long relationship just like DH. Former HC who is known as a solid coordinator. He is likely better now than he was 10 years ago. I'd be happy with him or Robinson from Syracuse. Robinson brings recruiting chops that can raise our cieling. Golden is a homerun x and o guy.

You mean it won't be a young position coach from the NFL who has never coordinated a D before and has a cocaine addicted brother? 🤡

It’s Golden or bust for me.

Rhule stated in press conference there have been multiple active P4 coaches who have expressed interest. Expects defense to keep same philosophy.

If it is Butler I will be underwhelmed.
Most people would be because here at Nebraska, we need a splash hire. We want to be "wowed" and win the off-season. But going back to some of the conversations a few weeks back, sometimes the best hires are the boring ones. Sure, the mid summer paring of Butler and White didn't go smoothly. But move this thing back two years and any school hiring Butler could sell him as a top NFL secondary coach and hot candidate for a NFL DC job.

Problem is how much we will learn of his capabilities because we're not gonna get 3 weeks preparation time for each team. Anybody should be able to scheme a defense against a known opponent with that amount of time.
