Why the offense sucks this year

We are trying to have a true freshman pocket QB throw the ball over 30x a game and expect that we are going to win that way. It would defy all logic as it is hard enough to be good right away as a QB, but when the QB cannot really run the ball it makes it even tougher and easier on the defense. Your feet can get you out of spots as a freshman, but to be efficient each week out of shotgun is not a simple task. 2 TD to 8 INT over the last five games is terrible.

Dana realized that we never take any short routes and were rarely looking at the middle of the field. I hope he sticks around because he at least can see the obvious. I still wish we would have run the ball more yesterday though. EJ, Dowdell each were doing more than fine with 5.5 and 6.5 ypc. It is also crazy to me that we don't get under center more often to make the defense bite on PA and also easier dump offs for Dylan. Regardless in time Dana is light years ahead of Satt who was an awful hire.

Why does Lloyd not play more? It's so obvious that he might be the fastest on the team and his hands have improved this year. He was the one guy last year who made the defense respect us deep. EJ might not be the most talented but he makes the right plays and can catch out of the backfield aka should have way more touches than he has so far this year. We heard a lot about Bonner only to see him stand on the sidelines, but he can block and is a hard runner when he gets the ball. Did Dana realize the obvious on these guys in two weeks time? What are Barthel and McGuire looking at? Rhule needs to take a long hard look at the OL and we will need a few portal kids who are capable. If he can keep Dana around I would then feel good about the offense next season. Run the damn ball!

Our defense is in shambles and we might have the worst secondary in the B10. I really like our front 7 but that isn't enough for teams who can throw the football. We were lucky we were in the B10 west last year. If we don't look good against Wisconsin and Iowa who can only run the football (with back up QBs) then it may be time for Snow to replace White.

Nice eval. That's it in a nutshell. To not go into the season KNOWING that the freshman QB would need a run game to help him is just stupid. It's like they watched him against UTEP and said, "This is Pat Mahomes, we can scrap the running game and just toss it around."

Satt complained loudly after every week during our winning streak last season about having to run the ball.

nobody listened.

our head coach has zero interest in running the football, despite what he may say.

38 passes, 25 runs on Saturday with a new OC. shocker.

Can’t wait to clean fvcking house after the season. However, I still want a bowl game and to at least look half decent

I can't argue with you. The running game was effective on Saturday and we should have went all in on it. It's obvious when we put together a string of runs they can't wait to get back to throwing it.

I don’t think Rhule cares how the offense puts up points as long as it gets done. The “run the ball” rhetoric is probably pandering but he demoted his buddy mid-season because he wasn’t getting it done. Good move.

Holgorsen is not going to pound the rock but as long as we can put up points that’s all that matters for the offense. I too am skeptical that it will work but all we can do from the stands is give him a chance.

Run the damn ball!

Avg Against SC

Johnson - 5.5 ypc
Dowdell- 6.5 ypc
yep.

it's so basic. it's the only answer for teams with no talent up front. it's an identity we can recruit to and hang our hat on.

instead, we play pattycake, look around incredulously and blame the refs.

your avatar is perfect. haven't seen @JOHNNY N around lately.

he gets the ball so sporadically I'm not sure how anyone expects him to get a feel for the game or his new team.

we are a non-serious football program fun by a guy who has no vision/identity/intestinal fortitude.
I agree, that we have no good feel, but some of his misses are head scratching. At this point I just want to see EJ to end the year and then try and revamp that entire room.

As much as we like to thrown, it would have taken USC awhile to adjust if we just ran the ball over and over and over again.

Of course we had some poor runnning plays, but overall, the YPC from both backs was winning football.

Rhule made changes in season. If we have talent it may show.

You are underestimating the defense. Nationally, the total defense ranks 28, respectable. 7 B1G teams above: Iowa (25), Wash, Minn, Oregon, PSU, IU, OSU(2). The passing defense ranks 56, and needs work, but 8 B1G teams are worse: ILL, USC, Mich, Rut, NW, UCLA, Purdue, Maryland. Wiscy is 8 nationally and Iowa is 49.

The passing offenses for Wiscy is 102 and Iowa is 127 nationally... USC is 13 Nationally. (They have freakish receivers who know how to get the ball)

The rushing offense for the next two games are Wiscy at 57 nationally and Iowa is 15, USC is 78.

Rushing Defense Neb is 20 nationally and Iowa 32, Wiscy 88.

The defense gets tired and probably frustrated because the offense does nothing to help them or rest them. The offense needs to help the defense with points and TOP, neither of which the offense is good at.

Seems that Holgorsen said what I've been saying all season

WR and RB coaches haven't delivered.

you left out a few things you've been saying all season:

Lol...at the fire Satterfield hot takes.

Satterfield is pretty good at this thing.

can't wait for an actual OL coach to round out the offensive staff this offseason

mascot Uncle Donnie can put on the Lil' Red suit if he wants to stay on staff

New OC says the OL is fine. Called out the RB and WR room.

Seems the TE room is fine. So, I guess Satt is a good TE coach.

can you provide a quote to substantiate your first claim? thanks in advance.

$2.8M for 2 seasons down the drain, 2 years of development wasted and 1 maybe good TE coach.

sounds about right.

Listen to the press conference. You can hear it for yourself.

Sorry your Donny sucks narrative has been blown up by the new OC.

I'm sure there'll be another molehill for you create a mountain out of sooner rather than later.

I am not sure if you have ever hired anybody before...

The most frustrating job I ever had was hiring people! They lie to your face, make up stories, lie on their resumes, and, of course, they are the best person on the face of the earth. It got to the point where I would hire people who I thought had good character and tell them this was a 2-week interview. I will pay you to come in every day and work. Then, at the end of two weeks, we would sit down and discuss the results... 90% of the people would quit after about a week and a half, and the remaining would eventually peter out about six weeks later. This was for a landscape construction position. I did not care if they had experienced or were right out of their momma's womb... Even if I knew them, they had the same interview.

No matter how much experience or masculinity they had, the vast majority of them lied. Their results showed me what they knew and what type of person they were. I am sure it is the same in coaching. I know some of these guys were with Rhule before, or they were friends, but it is next to impossible to find good help. You have to wait to see the fruit before you can make a judgment on the tree. Let's see what happens at the end of the season with the coaches.

Don’t hold your breath. Dana said he was “pleasantly surprised” by our O line.

Pad level and toughness. Pretty good things to have. Probably means pretty good coaching.
"we had 2 snap infractions. those are 100% on the center."

- Holgerson, discussing yet another 5th+ year player who hasn't developed a lick under mascot Uncle Donnie

"pleasantly surprised" because what he watched on film was absolute garbage

maybe the big boys are auditioning for their new leader

we'll see this week and next

in 3 years as OL coach, the biggest headline mascot Uncle Donnie's players have made is a gameday DUI.

no wonder nephew Dylan is gun shy.
