Why not Deion Sanders?

Probably wouldn't want to come here
Doesn’t hurt to at least put out feelers.

I actually see him as confident enough to deal with the expectations here, a good coach, and capable of bringing top talent. The worst he could say is no.

What I don’t understand is he is one of the best coaches this cycle, and it feels like I am hearing that he has too much swagger for Lincoln, NE or something.

I don't think we have nearly enough data to say he is the best coach this cycle....and his experience at a D-1 school is non existent. Prime and Lincoln feel like an odd match to me but I'd be all for it personally.

No!

I live in Minnesota and strongly believe people should be hired based on their merits alone. I find favoritism and discrimination based on race despicable no matter who is doing it.

By the way, Dave Aranda is of Mexican American heritage, I believe.

Aranda, Sanders, Fickell, and Meyer are the exciting coaches out there for me. I have a feeling Joseph could be great, but I want to see more.
You are correct. Aranda is from Guadalajara. That’s funny because I’ve heard multiple people discuss his ethnicity and it’s always been that he’s “mixed race”. I guess it’s possible that his lineage is still black.

I also am a merit hire guy but IF we end up with Mickey I would be pleased to have a black head coach.

What worries me is that some of the guys being discussed might be good coaches but aren’t really proven recruiters. We need both and always have. I think Aranda can recruit, from what I have read. Sanders obviously can. Rhule can, from what I have read. Not sure about others.

Think Bryan Kelly at LSU....those two just flat out don't fit and that plane is already in a full throttle nose dive with smoke rolling out the back of all the engines that are still attached to the plane.

Yeah, I don't disagree. I think the head dude just needs to be a recruiting SOB, Motivator and organized or has someone that does that for him. From there, just make sure we have top of the line coaches and recruiters at every level and we'll be alright. Have to be able to identify the talent and get it in here.
That's all? :) Every fan dreams of these for their team, few have it.

I would love it

could you imagine the sidelines if Prime came here? every former pro we've ever had come through NU would be at every single game

I think Deion is an incredibly genuine guy and a very, very good person who has put others at the heart of his whole life despite the occasional theatrics

whichever P5 school ends up landing him will be extremely fun to follow

Cause his experience is head coach for 20 games in C-USA.
This. I don't know how many people are on Trev's radar that have zero games coaching experience at the P5 level, (assistant or head coaching) but I'd bet it's not many.

Outside of Sanders how many names have been tossed out up here for coaches with virtually no experience / track record? The obligatory Jon Gruden mention every coaching vacancy generates?

YEah, I more just get tired of Nebraska always saying the coaches are great development guys, but lack in the recruiting department. I'd love to have both, but think we really need to get some ace recruiters in here and not rely on 1-2 guys to do all of the heavy lifting is more of the point.

We need to start at square one. Can he coach basic fundamentals? Everyone bangs on and on about recruits. We always have good recruiting classes year after for the most part. We lose many if those guys before they play or we fail to coach them and they never develop.

We have lineman that are slow, fat out of shape and don’t have good footwork. We have a defense that can’t tackle.

Coach first, recruit second. We haven’t had decent, fundamentally sound coaching in years.

Hahaha...was wonderin if somebody was gonna quote that.

Ha I was searching for some takes after watching Adam Carriker's podcast on Deion and stumbled onto that little nugget. Good stuff.

I did find Carriker's choice in both topic and timing to be interesting. Posted a link in another thread, but here it is again...

I don’t see Prime getting along with the NU fan base. He’ll be a southern coach.
After the last years of disaster ANY ONE who wins will get along with the NU fan base. The issue is whether or not Deon could win in the B1G, a big step up from his current competition.

I love the idea of Sanders, but it makes me sound like a hypocrite in saying we need to veer away from unproven coaches in the P5 realm.

Where it differs is his recruiting prowess is insane. He can draw the top recruits from every corner of the country. I feel like the buzz and momentum of the program could flip in an insane way.

It all starts with the S & C coach. For over 4 years, NU has been subjected to a S & C staff that produced a bunch of slow-footed, non-reactionary, turnstiles that are easily defeated by quicker, faster defenders.

The coaching is so much more difficult if the raw material is subpar. If NU can get those big people up to "average", at least they have something to work with. Average then can become better than average.

Even kids like Corcoran and Piper were athletic in high school, since they arrived here they have become plodders and have no explosiveness to develop until the training regime is completely overhauled.

Does anyone think Benhart or Anthony will suddenly show more promise?

If you recall the traits TA is looking for in a coach, I don’t see any Sanders has

I would love to have coach Prime. I doubt Trev would ever take that risk, but it would be fun. Deion outside of Jordan was my favorite athlete as a kid. Just loved the swag and his shoes were fantastic.
Loved watching Dion. I saw him hit it inside the park home run at mile high stadium against the Rockies. I have never seen a man move that fast.

So you can give him a platform to get the job he really covers, that being the FSU gig if Norvell fizzles. Also I don't think Deion would really fit the culture in Lincoln. Go get a program builder. Demon is really just outrecruiting his competition right now. His opponents don't have even three star recruits across their roster.

If he can put together a staff that is a power five quality staff then he’d be good. He wouldn’t be worse than Riley and Frost

You want a real FCS recruiter look at the Campbell Camels coach ;)
