Okay, so the defense has a lot of thinking/filming/healing to do. It was apparent against not just against Southern Mississippi but against Miami too. But before I get into some interesting ifs, ands and buts, it can't go unnoticed that in the second half the defense nearly cost the Huskers the game.
Our offense is noticeably ahead of the defense in regards to learning the new systems. However, on 6 drives yesterday, the offense failed to get in to the end zone against USM. Am I the only only that feels like Terrell Newby doesn't quite get all of the possible yards he can? I know, I'm being greedy because of the recent treat it was to watch Roy, Rex and Ameer run the ball. And if Janovich is as real as we saw Saturday, why didn't we give him the rock inside the red zone? Frankly, why were we unable to get into the end zone? The running back situation is still in question for me. Clearly, Ameer made up for a lot of flaws last year. Maybe I'm blind to our offensive line's weak blocking or some other statistics or factor, but did anyone else see any differently?
Now I'm gonna play the if game now. Take it with a grain of salt, but let's say the offense cashes in TDs on 3/6 of those 3 field goals. Instead of 22-0, how does 34-0 sound? How motivated would you be as a Southern Miss player to try and comeback from that deficit? Granted, Southern Miss' offense was not horrible by any means and if given this situation, it probably could have still mustered out a small chunk of points. But you would think you'd be mentally packing your gear and heading for the bus. I'm scratching my head, but you would think it should've been over in the first half. The offense doesn't have to catch up as much as the D, but there is some concern. Hopefully the offensive staff learn from this.
