A healthy Haarberg still has to be the play, but I agree that if he's not at least 80%-90%, you have to go a different direction. In that case, it has to be Purdy.
I can see what the coaching staff saw in Jeff Sims. The dude looks like he belongs out there, and when he's not turning it over, he looks by far to be the most natural athlete at the QB position. Unfortunately, every tenth snap or so he makes a catastrophic mistake. It is mind-boggling; I think its a "focus" issue. It's like he cannot comprehend that every single snap is critically important. His mistakes are pure carelessness. I think I subscribe (pure speculation) to the theory others have posited that he is a good "practice" player and that he unfortunately carries a practice-level of intensity into games.
Haarberg is the complete opposite. He is not a natural QB, but he is a tough kid with a lot of heart. I'm sure he is working his tail off at getting better; unfortunately, aside from having a live arm, he doesn't appear to have the tangible traits needed to be a good quarterback. His mistakes are the result of a lack of skills.
From what I've seen of Chubba Purdy, I believe the assessment that he is a "good passer" and "knows the offense". He looks like a real QB - at an FCS or D-II school. His shortcomings are really just a lack of P5 level talent.
No matter what, I hope this past week and the current reality will force the coaches to realize that the recipe for any kind of success this weekend will be to pound the rock with our new best weapon, Emmett Johnson. He needs 25+ touches this week. I don't care if we run it three straight plays and punt a few times if it gives us the best chance to win.
