players at serious programs don't usually get the chance to suck it up for 4 straight years.

this scenario also doesn't exactly seem like much of a 'backfire'.

At some point, you need to accept that things change. Young people piss away opportunities before NIL. How many had a free ride/scholarship and didn't attend classes? Or how about Keyshawn's son who didn't workout and got high instead of working on his game? All before NIL Lots of busted recruits. Lots of busted draft picks.
