College NICKNAME?

I believe they should follow a criteria. They should:

1. Be relevant historically or geographically to the school or region.
2. Show action
3. Be adaptable to versions of themselves.
4. Be somewhat intimidating
5. Be Unique

CORNHUSKERS FITS ALL OF THE ABOVE. It's a great nickname. It's what we do in Nebraska. My MOM has 180 acres of corn. It describes work and action. It can be shortened to Huskers which lends itself to lots of good chants. It sounds somewhat intimidating as it describes control and a kind of butchering of something. It is definetly unique to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

also like Hurricanes, Longhorns, Crimson Tide, I like Gators too except it's just "Gators" all the time.

Missouri, Clemson, Auburn, or LSU tigers???? Did there used to be Tigers in those states or LIons in Pennsylvania? Maybe there were Nittany's. What does it have to do with those teams? Trojans???? Is that part of southern California lore? Cardinal? Wouldn't that be better for Rutgers or something where there are Red birds in the trees. Buckeyes? How intimidating is a NUT? Hawkeyes, Jayhawks, what are those? Just wondering.

Personally, I'd say Jayhawk is a pretty good name. It's a historical nickname (Jayhawker) going back to the mid 1800s which ultimately became linked to the settlers of Kansas (Free State) who opposed slavery. Both sides (Missouri and Kansas), especially during the Civil War, raided and sacked each other's towns, including a few absolutely nasty massacres. It's really quite fascinating, so I'd have to vote for Jayhawks as fitting the bill.

LSU Tigers is from the Louisiana Tigers regiment in the Confederate Army in the Civil war...Zouave's...brave, tough fighters all. I love that name for them.

Still one of the coolest documentaries I've seen was "Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie." Tells the entire story of The Manhattan Project, and shows footage of numerous declassified videos of all the nuclear tests, both in New Mexico and the Bikini Islands. Truly a fascinating documentary.

CORNHUSKERS FITS ALL OF THE ABOVE. It's a great nickname. It's what we do in Nebraska. My MOM has 180 acres of corn. It describes work and action. It can be shortened to Huskers which lends itself to lots of good chants. It sounds somewhat intimidating as it describes control and a kind of butchering of something. It is definetly unique to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Missouri, Clemson, Auburn, or LSU tigers???? Did there used to be Tigers in those states or LIons in Pennsylvania? Maybe there were Nittany's. What does it have to do with those teams? Trojans???? Is that part of southern California lore? Cardinal? Wouldn't that be better for Rutgers or something where there are Red birds in the trees. Buckeyes? How intimidating is a NUT? Hawkeyes, Jayhawks, what are those? Just wondering.

The Stanford Cardinal is due to the color Cardinal, not birds.

College NICKNAME?

I believe they should follow a criteria. They should:

1. Be relevant historically or geographically to the school or region.
2. Show action
3. Be adaptable to versions of themselves.
4. Be somewhat intimidating
5. Be Unique

CORNHUSKERS FITS ALL OF THE ABOVE. It's a great nickname. It's what we do in Nebraska. My MOM has 180 acres of corn. It describes work and action. It can be shortened to Huskers which lends itself to lots of good chants. It sounds somewhat intimidating as it describes control and a kind of butchering of something. It is definetly unique to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

also like Hurricanes, Longhorns, Crimson Tide, I like Gators too except it's just "Gators" all the time.

Apparently, after a little google search, it is much like their history of success...made up. Supposed to be named after Chief Black Hawk. The Newspaper changed it's name from the Iowa Patriot to the Hawk-Eye. Sounds legit.

A school with a nickname / mascot similar to ours is Wichita State: Corn Huskers / Wheat Shockers. There's action that's relevant to the area (harvesting grain), and both longer names can be shortened, Huskers / Shockers.

One of my favorite strange names remains the Delta State Fighting Okra.

Regarding the questions about whether there are mountain lions in central Pennsylvania, let me add a similar question. Are there black bears around Oxford, MS?
