What is Tony White thinking?

He sees no more upside here
2024 would have been a year for more obvious team improvement but special teams and offense overall didn’t pan out, plus recruiting in FL so much better with that FL State storied program

Deon will be gone sooner than you think and maybe sometime this year yet..
And by the same logic, who is to say that Rhule doesn't pick up and leave after one "good" season beating inferior opponents? Its literally EXACTLY the same path that Rhule has followed in his career. Except Nebraska isn't in the Big Twelve and in order to have a 9-10 win season you have to beat 2-3 ranked opponents at the minimum in this conference.

What’s our record with this logic - 11-1?
My logic is we didn't have Ukelele fvcking up half the season.
Matt's never coached a team that didn't figure out how to lose at least 3 games.

We had 6 wins this year including powerhouses like UTEP, Northern Iowa, Rutgers, Purdue, Wisconsin, not a good team among the bunch. Only exception was CU in the first half.

If you're gonna win 11 games, you better find a coach who's a little better than 2-10 in close games.
It'll be the day when a Matt Rhule Nebraska team finishes 11-1. I'd like Matt to prove me wrong.

I also wanted TO to prove to me he could win it all, it just took him 22-23 years to do it,
and I don't think Matt Rhule is gonna be mistaken as Tom Osborne in this lifetime.
We always had that roadblock of Oklahoma and then Colorado to stop us. For years we couldn't win the Big 8 title cause the national champion was in our own conference.

Now we only have Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Penn State, and 3 of the 4 are capable of winning it all when they have that type of talent. Also sometimes a big year by another BIG team.

What happens the next time a Jimmie Johnson or Barry Switzer or Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer takes over a USC team with the kind of talent they have on the West Coast, another huge obstacle in our way. USC isn't gonna suck forever.

We're heading into year 3 and still trying to beat a good team on the road. That's the next hurdle.

If NU doesn't slam dunk from the incoming freshmen and portal, its gonna be more of the same.

We know we need serious upgrades in Long Snapper, Punter, WR's, DL, DB's and coaching. That's a lot.

If Matt's here for a long time, we best get used to 9-3 as a big year. Maybe 10-3 or 9-4 with a good bowl.
I can live with that cause us old timers know how effing good you gotta be to win the BIG or the natty.

Look, I'm a big NU fan for a long time, but I also know what good football looks like and I haven't seen it for more than a sporadic game or so from his NU teams.

I think the problem is systemic.

The more talent we get, the more those special players are gonna be pirated by real powers with deep pockets.

Teams were contacting Fidone this year. What we gonna do when they take a crack at Carter Nelson in 2 years?

Then it comes down to coaching and coaching decisions.
Kirby Smart vs. Matt Rhule for the money or the title?
That's laughable.

Nothing personal Red, we're just stating our opinions. I've already seen enough.

All good Easy. I think a 10-2 season will be more commonplace than 12-0 and 11-1 for top tier teams. The roster reduction will add parity to the schools as there will be more talent to go around. If Rhule can get us to 9-3 and in the playoff hunt and to the playoffs 1/2 the time I would consider that a huge success from the situation we have been in.

Our program has been a dumpster fire for so long and Rhule bears the brunt of it for coming in lately. He was told by the people that hired him they wanted someone to build the program up by developing talent, knowing it would be a longer approach.

He likely has new marching orders with a new boss and while I’m disappointed we didn’t turn the corner this year - particularly 3 games (IL, UCLA and Iowa), I’m hopeful if Dylan sticks around and DH is on staff that we will see a huge improvement this next year.

Indiana is the exception in this new landscape and it’s impressive of what has happened in Cig’s first year.

Ultimately - I know Rhule isn’t going anywhere next year and I want to trust his process. I appreciate and admire his conviction to his blueprint and expect and trust it will take form next year and build from there.

In general I think everyone hopes this too - but only another season of waiting- which is frustrating!!!

Indiana didn’t.
And who the fvck are you..

Valid point. Not a fan of drifters which is why I wasn't big on hiring Rhule to begin with. Also White for that matter.

FSU has a higher ceiling than Nebraska as evidenced by the past 14 years. Bringing someone in to loo over his shoulder isn’t gonna help matters.

Speaking of that, is Rhule just throwing stuff at the wall to see if it sticks? How enticing is being a coordinator under him if there is a good chance he brings someone in to undermine you?
I agree. Florida State is not a lateral job to Nebraska. Florida State is a better job than Nebraska. Yes, the wheels came off this year. But they have a natty in their recent history and some really good records. I hate every word that just came out of my mouth. But it is what it is. Nebraska has a long way to go.

If the offense and special teams hadn’t been trash for most of the season, we would have won a few more games and TW would be leaving for a HC job. And he would take the same set of assistants and players as he will now take to FSU as DC. So from the NU fan’s perspective, nothing has really changed from preseason expectations. Other than we lost more games than we should have, which is a universal constant.
Great take. Agree. I was prepped all season for him to leave at the end of the year.

Best post I've seen out of hundreds I've read on this topic. He would have left for UCLA last year if he had been hired. Rhule knows he wouldn't be around long and Butler was hired to replace him. If that caused friction, or caused our defense problems because Butler's DB coaching didn't mesh well with White's scheme, it is what it is. If White had said he wanted to be here forever, Rhule would not have hired a DC in waiting.

NU's defense was good the last two years when they came out on fire. Unfortunately, the fire seemed hit or miss and when they came out flat they couldn't stop teams on 3rd down and made marginal QBs look like Dan Marino. I'm WAY more worried Dana H won't come back. It is possible Dana at OC and Butler at DC with the young players who have been in the system 1 or 2 years now could cause us to have a good year next year.

Or....everything could start falling apart beginning with signing day and Rhule could have two more lame duck years where he and everyone else is unhappy. One thing for sure, Nebraska being irrelevant is good for my health. I keep watching me weight and exercising hoping to see Nebraska field one good team before I die.

Well, DH is back and the WR coach will be replaced. So that s good.

This is based on a completely false premise

Rhule didnt go out and hire a “DC in waiting” because he wanted to

He was made to scramble his ass off for somebody at the 11th hour after yet another one of his assistants committed a fireable offense right before the season

Butler wasn’t coming unless promised the moon and Rhule didn’t have many folks to call in July with game 1 just around the corner

Also - Good on you for the focus on health. Love that

Are you lost, again…
