Seems recently the sports casters are all reporting the soccer scores as 1-Nil, 2-Nil, etc..

I know in Europe they would say it that way, but it sounds stupid coming from the local news.

Do we really have to adopt this "Nil" thing?

Haha.. maybe it is just that I noticed this recently and they've been doing it all along? I think they were going through local girls soccer games scores and every result had a 'nil' in it, and it just struck me as odd. Tennis scoring is def dumb.. :)

The #1 dumbest thing about soccer culture in this country is how all of the foreign sounding Brit terminology is used to describe things that have perfectly good, common American words that are more or less ubiquitous in the the sporting world here, to wit:

"nil" to represent that one team or the other did not score (as opposed to "zero")

"kit" to represent a jersey or uniform

calling one team a "side", as opposed to squad, club, or just "team"

the term "cap" which I believe represents a game played (possibly only in international competition)

the previously metioned "pitch" instead of field

It is just baffling and hurts the acceptance of soccer as a mainstream sport, IMO.

If soccer fans want it to be accepted the way that traditional american games are, then start talking and acting like it's a legitimate sport on par with the others.

Insisting on using foreign slang in place of perfectly acceptable and established American terms makes it seem weird and different to mainstream fans who are less familiar with soccer, and pigeonholes it as a niche sport that will never be considered the equal of the more popular sports in this country.

And really, if you insist on going that route, have the balls to go all the way and call it football, just like the rest of the world does.

Of course, they won't do that, because people would laugh at them more than they already do.

HAHAHA i find it amusing. when discussing I most definitely use the terminology of pitch for field, boots for soccer shoes, nil--for zero, Mr. Referee, Keep or Keeper, well done for clever play, Kit for uniform, set piece for a set play after play has been stopped, obstruction for blocking, match for game, CAP for international games played, clean sheet for game that a keep does not allow a goal, onion bag for net, extra time for overtime, long ball game for traditional english style play, measured ball for a precise pass----awhh we could go on and on---lol

Ok what is it with tennis scoring? Seriously. First two points are worth15 then the third is worth 10 then it's you have to win the point after advantage if tied at 40. ?????
Just say you win the point at 4 but it has to be by two. All the "love" "ad in" "ad out" drives me nuts and I like the sport!

Per wiki

The origins of the 15, 30, and 40 scores are believed to be medieval French. It is possible that a clock face was used on court, with a quarter move of the hand to indicate a score of 15, 30, and 45. When the hand moved to 60, the game was over. However, in order to ensure that the game could not be won by a one-point difference in players' scores, the idea of "deuce" was introduced. To make the score stay within the "60" ticks on the clock face, the 45 was changed to 40.

Therefore, if both players have 40, the first player to score receives ten and that moves the clock to 50. If the player scores a second time before the opponent is able to score, they are awarded another ten and the clock moves to 60. The 60 signifies the end of the game. However, if a player fails to score twice in a row, then the clock would move back to 40 to establish another "deuce".

actually the word is not LOVE it's l'oeuf, --it's french for egg---hence 0

i bet you really like duece huh?

Yeah ranks right up there with DONU.

Watched the news tonight and nothing was mentioned. What happened?

OWH

The Packers watched as Westside was assessed eight yellow cards — two of which resulted in reds — and played down a man on two separate occasions.

But a late scene in which multiple Westside players confronted the center official — one even making an obscene gesture in his direction — turned ugly, with tournament officials removing other Warrior players from the field.

“It was kind of hard to watch,” Maass said. “I’ve got a ton of respect for (Westside coach) John Brian, and I thought he kept his composure, but I’ve never seen kids get up in the face of a referee and get away with it.”
