I am curious to everyone's thoughts on where Frost is starting talent wise with the team. Pelini was known to be a poor recruiter but was winning 9 a year while getting blown out by Wi each year. Riley was thought to be a good recruiter and his teams generally played Wi tough while falling apart against many other teams.

How far are we from Wisconsin ? The schedule is brutal this year but it would sure be nice to make a statement against WI and Iowa on the field this year

If we could defense 1 or 2 of the Badgers running plays better, I’d say pretty close.

It's all about off-season conditioning. The talent is there...just need these guys to put in the work with true Husker attitude and pride.

We aren't that far off. We recruit better talent but player development was poor for a long time. That is where the difference has been. Frost can develop players so we will take over the B1G West sooner than people expect.

I think we have a long way in the trenches, conditioning and mental toughness. I think we have better athletes in the back 7 on defense and skill positions on offense (sans running back), but the differences in the other 3 areas are too much to overcome. Hopefully we can close the gap, but this might be one of Wisconsin’s better teams in a while. I think we will get there, but it’ll take a few years.

Heh, Bo had 9 or 10 wins for seven consecutive years.....and did beat Wisconsin. Smiling Mike only knew how to lose to anybody.

Well, according to recruiting rankings, Bo and Riley were pretty similar. Bo was able to win 9 games with similar talent so I don't see any reason why Frost doesn't have 9 win type talent now. With better coaching, conditioning, training, etc, there's no way we shouldn't win at least 8 this year.

There are more variable working against us this year than just talent and coaching. Transitioning to a new offensive scheme and a new coaching staff, not having a quarterback with any game experience, and to top it off we have the toughest schedule in the country. 8 wins seems like an unreasonable standard for a first year coach walking into this situation and I think frost knows that and is why he is trying to temper expectations by saying it will take time and patience. Let’s not set the man up for failure in year one.

I go back and forth on what the starting point should be that I really don’t know. On one hand, this team is only one season removed from a 9-3 regular season, and I think the complete meltdown last year was due more to lack of motivation and conditioning than lack of talent.

That said, Shine is right. To say our Oline was bad last year is an understatement. Oline is so critical to the offense I think in the fast paced, fluid motion offense Frost wants to run makes it even more critical than in other systems. We’re thin, and conditioning while better still has a long way to go. And as stated, new QBs with no game experience, new systems and scheme’s, new styles of communication, and the toughest schedule in the country makes for an uphill battle this year.

The silver lining is that the coaching staff has already implmented this system with a high degree of success, so I do think 2018 will be much improved over 2017. I’m just not sure the improvement is going to translate to 9 or 10 wins. I’m thinking more like 7 or 8.

Yeah, I hear you. Our Oline was sooooo pathetic last year it would seem hard to believe they could be even somewhat competent in year one. HCSF is great but even him with staff could be stressed badly desperately trying to turn them around.

Then, add the blackshirts who were almost as grossly inept as the Oline......oh boy, I sure wouldn't blame SF for requiring lots of Jim Beam to get through this year.

I'm for eight wins this year but seven would be just fine too. Removing three years of Beaver Ball isn't a five minute project is my guess.

I'd say our starting point for talent is a net sum of no gain or drop off from last year. I imagine Coach Frost's development will be a huge plus, but offset by the need for players that fit his offense and defensive schemes. Caution strongly against weighing our performance this year against any barometer we previously used. I really think that being better than Wisconsin is our only relevant short term goal, and we are far from that at the moment.
