Was watching True Detective last night and they referenced the Franklin Credit Union sex scandal. I was definitely in Omaha during this time (high school) and dont remember this at all. In fact during the show when they referenced the Nebraska child sex scandal I thought about Rulo.

It was a story before its time... While some will argue that it was "debunked"..... there was definitely some horrific conduct going on with the catholic church, boystown, and business leaders. If the story would have "broke" five years ago instead of 25-30 years ago it would have been viewed in a far less skeptical light.

Remember it well, but there are so many versions of what happened it’s really impossible to offer much information on it. Some of those versions would make True Detective seem tame by comparison, but I’m not saying they are credible.

The Omaha Police Chief was some how involved supposedly....but I can't remember his name...and that movie critic....peter something....as I remember it was pretty wild and salacious.

It was supposed to be a big deal and bring a lot of people down...it did nothing of the sort when the dust settled.

I haven't watched the documentary or read the book, but I remember this well. The scope and breadth of some of the allegations were so crazy that the accusers lost credibility. It seems like every high level politician/public figure in the Omaha area was involved, including the superintendent of my high school. Flying young girls to sex parties in DC, satanic cults, assassinations to quiet accusers, this story had something for everyone. A couple of the families allegedly involved (victims) went to my school. Crazy stuff.

There probably was some bad stuff happening, but like I said, the outlandish allegations made it difficult to determine what was credible.

Do you think that was sort of the plan? To make it so crazy that no one would buy it?

Yeah even as a young man back then, this just didn't sound like it was realistic to me. Way to many professionals who were well known in the community for this to have been true, with zero evidence to support it. I also admit to getting to this opinion listening to my father talk about it, he was so skeptical he pretty much laughed off the entire story.

I remember the story but not the details. Who knows if it was true or not? I don't doubt anything anymore.

I remember it a little, but have read all kinds of conspiracy theories about it, going from Omaha up to DC. Harold Anderson OWH, the superintendent of OPS, Allan Beard from Brandies on and on. Don't know how much is true.

I still believe some type of abuse happened (in particular, allegations involving the Webb family and Larry King), but not to the grand scale it was made out to be.

It definitely was going on. Part of it was that you had a well known World Herald writer involved in soliciting sex from underage boys. Back then if the World Herald didn't report it, it wasn't news in the state. I don't know if Peter Citron ever did time for his crimes, but a guy from my high school rented a room from Citron after he graduated from high school (17)and supposedly was one of the victims. There were rumors that he provided drugs then took advantage of kids when they were doped or drunk. The World Herald eventually was forced to write some stories about some of the crap going on in town but for years they looked away from it. That was kind of a normal societal thing back then. You just didn't talk about unpleasant things.

There is mention of Warren Buffet escorting a drag queen to a drag show in the updated book.
Seems like this scandal was eons ago, but yet, seems like yesterday when you read the names and alleged crimes.
