I can't honestly remember him being reported to be in talks with any other schools when we hired him. I remember it being reported that we basically had to negotiate against Carolina's buyout for him, but were there other teams? I remember it being reported that he turned down Oregon when he took the Baylor job. I'm sure there were other teams in on him and it just wasn't reported, or I'm just forgetting. But if not, that should have been a huge red flag

There were whispers that was Auburn was interested, but I never really believed them.

Nobody serious about football thought he was capable of standing in the fire against Alabama and Georgia.

Trev zero’d in on Rhule because he fell for the preacher schtick. Realized before this season started that it was a shit hire so he bolted for a program that made an actual good hire.

Smart business move by Trev, as he most surely would’ve been fired.

Who was vying for Cignetti or Sanders?

Frost and Chip Kelly had multiple schools vying for their services.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it matters all that much.

If I remember right not many teams were going after Rhule because he said he planned on taking the year off since Carolina was paying him so much to leave. But Trev wouldn’t stop nagging him until he agreed. It didn’t sound like he was interested but when offered a fat contract he couldn’t resist.

He has put in a lot of effort since he has been here though even though we aren’t getting results.

I remember a seeing a headline that Indiana was taking a chance on an unknown or something to that extent when Cignetti was hired.

This thread topic is spot on for how our fan base evaluates coaches in this new NU football era. Who else wanted him? Is he on the top of web articles I can Google?

I have zero issues with Trev hiring Rhule. I have tons of issues with Rhule now though. But any new coach is a crap shoot as our history over the past 20 years shows. There is no sure thing outside of hiring a hall of fame level coach and such a coach is not coming here. Rhule had a history of turning around shit college programs. His hire made sense since we are a shit program now. I think he is going to be yet another failed coach here. But the fat lady ain't done singing...

Well, first of all, I think we all need to stop including Cignetti in any of these types of conversations. If he really ends up being that successful, he's a complete anomaly that was a lightning in a bottle one in a million hit. Or he'll be like the tons of other flash in a pan coaches that didn't make it big.

Next, Sanders. Yes it was well documented that he had interest from several schools, including us. Hell, he interviewed with 2 the year prior.

Yeah, Frost had interest and again, wound up being a flash in the pan. And not sure what you mean by Kelly. He's bounced all over with interest from a lot of different places.

So, I get that you're saying too, but I just don't think any of it applies specifically to what I was asking.

You make this sound like some kind of bad thing. How else would you expect people to evaluate coaching candidates. If they're coveted coaches, there are a lot of football people who know a lot more about all of it than any of us that put the names in the web articles that get Googled. It's kind of how news is consumed in this day and age.

Also pretty funny and ironic that you used Cignetti, when his response to who he is was that he's a winner and people should Google him 😂

If every relationship fails, what is the common denominator involved? I think Nebraska ruins coaching careers. Why? I'll be damned if I know?
