Week 11 Press conference

This actually pisses me off in a major way. All of Rhule's mouth service and a new coach comes in and says "you won't play if you don't block" and all of a sudden it's better. It just tells you there has been zero accountability or competition in this program. The losers that have been playing just keep playing and feel entitled to do whatever they want with no consequences. THIS IS WHY WE CONTINUE TO BE A LOSER PROGRAM.
Rhule lets his coordinators make personnel decisions. It’s probably another reason Satt is soon to be unemployed. Dana won’t be afraid to bench a QB if he thinks that’s what needed.

I actually thought a lot of that was technique, mainly failure to drive the feet. You stand still and grab a guy - holding. You grab the guy while you're driving him backwards 5 yards - good block.
The edge blocking got noticeably worse after we had a string of holding penalties. IMO it’s a general tentativeness. People commenting on Brown’s ability to get his WRs to block are dead on. I will also lay this problem at Satt’s feet. He’s been a TE coach for years. He should know how he wants WRs to block and should be able to teach it in one session. Then it’s just repetition by.his WR coach. The OC should know enough to correct an issue.

I thought it was bad before imo. I thought the reason we had gotten those holding calls was due to them not being able to hold blocks.

Good, this kind of talk and accountability should have been coming from the HC from day 1. Maybe a OC like Dana can save Rhule's butt cause our head man is a clown show during the game
yep

2 years into NGMR's tenure and a new coach promoting actual competition and evaluation looks like a genius:

And would explain why defense is getting taken advantage of on GameDay. WR not blocking in practice either

Pathetic that Rhule does not have a staff capable of actually, you know, coaching. Rhule brought in these amateur hour coaches and it is Rhule who let an undisciplined and poorly coached team take the field without shit canning the responsible parties. Furthermore, has anyone else noticed that Rhule has started to throw players under the bus lately? Pointing out, for example, that the right defenses were called on USC’s TD passes but our guys did not do what they were told?

Memo to our big talking head coach: there is more to coaching than simply calling the right schemes. It is also coaching your players to execute those schemes. And if they persist in failing to execute the scheme you either demote the player and/or shit can the coach.

Everyone and their blind pet hamster could see that our receivers have not blocked well all year or been very good at all catching contested passes. And yet our unqualified 15 year old receivers coach still has a job.

That made me laugh. This little guy’s name is Surreal. Not to be confused with Suhreal. Big difference and nothing similar at all.

Decided to listen to Holgorsen press conference after reading about it on here.

Man I love this guy. Calls a spade a spade for sure.

Give it a listen. It's what we need. Should have happened last year but I understand why he didn't. Pretty frustrating that he has to come in and tell them what's wrong. Now let's get it fixed

Yep.

Rhule has said multiple times that this change wasn’t just about this year. It was about laying the foundation for next year too. I’m sure there’s at least a verbal agreement in place for next year.
No, he’s said the opposite.

“This is not about next year. This is about right now.”:

Which I why I agree and it absolutely is a move for next year.

Elevating expectations. Satt is probably too nice…. Dana isn’t afraid of hurting anybody’s feelings.
In a nutshell DH says, "If its gonna have my finger prints on it, you're gonna do it my way."

That's how I coached my entire career. You don't have to be a prick, just tell 'em.

I really do like Dana. The dude has the confidence I like to see in a man when he's talking about something and shooting straight, and not worrying about hurting feelings. He would be 1000 x's better RB or WR coach than we currently have.

The best thing Rhule can do is just get the hell out of Dana's way and let him do what he is really good at.

He's had kind of an up and down career as a head coach, but when they were good,
they were really good. Even though we have the same talent, I expect a nice improvement this week and I'm way more optimistic about winning than I was before watching him today. At a minimum, we should see much more focus and effort from the offense.

So many of the things he was spending time on, due to total unfamiliarity, the first 10 days or so have now been committed to memory, hence, now the real improvement, teaching, scheming, and performance expectation level can begin this week. Hopefully, that will lead to a peak 60 minute effort on Saturday. No reason why NU can't win this week.

I really like an OC that flat out tells the RB coach how it is. I like how he tells the WR's if they don't block they won't get the ball. We need, and haven't had in a long while, dudes that are really hungry out there and busting their ass in order to deserve being thrown to. Even when he called out Scott at C for the two pre-snaps issues, it wasn't done to show him up, its really more a case of "dude you're the guy who sets the play in motion, you have to get it right." Nothing wrong with that.

Rhule should do absolutely everything in his power to sign Dana on next year or two as the OC with total autonomy of that offense. Dana knows what we have for talent on the Offensive side of the ball, his input on types of players to try to get from the portal would be beneficial to Matt.

I'm not gonna be a guy who says, in this game, that we have to run the ball x number or times, as a fan, my whole way of thinking is just find a way to move the ball and then score in the red zone. I don't care if we run it in or throw it in, we just need to score. We can do the style points later.

What if we had 3-4 of those types on the offensive side of the ball?
Then we'd be a serious football team.
Yeah, seems like Holgorsen is kind of a dick. We had a head coach that was a major dick and he happened to win 9-10 games all seven years he was here.

As I don’t think any P5 team is gonna hire DH, I think he’s likely to stay. And if so, I think 2-3 coaches get replaced for sure, maybe more.

That would be huge because next year our schedule is easier than this year, IMO.

Plus DH can put in his offense fully and coach them up. Frankly he was far better when just the OC and not having to deal with all the head coach responsibilities.

Now.. If only the defensive coaches had someone come in to demand accountability too

Regarding Brown's blocking WRs - remember Jon Vedral? I think he got some post season recognition despite pretty meager receiving stats - it was nearly all based on his abilities as an edge blocker and how much respect the opposing coaches had for those abilities.

Our skill position coaches are hearing loud and clear what he wants to see. They’re coaching for their jobs these last two games but I’ll be mildly surprised if there isn’t turnover there.

I know Vedral’s sister Tracy and her kids.

Deep down DH is probably shaking his head that they've been coaching this way for almost 2 years.

One thing I did notice on Saturday was one block by Fidone. I don't think he's a very good blocker, but on one play he was lined up left and came in motion across and really make a jarring block. It stood out because it was the only time in 2 years I saw him really lay into a guy. That had to be all Dana, cause Satt's had almost 2 years to get that type of block out of Fidone.

I would like to see him line up as a fullback a time or two. I think he could adopt that mindset.

my theory now is that Rhule thought they would be good enough without DH(which he he always seems to horribly overestimate} and also worried that DH would want to call out all his unqualified friends which would be awkward for the entire season.

But now that all his friends will probably get fired anyway it’s easier to deal with DH to save his job at least.

Dana said he's been putting 16 hour days since he's been here! That's what it takes
T.O. out worked his opposition every day of the week his whole coaching career. It's no accident that helped him to the success he had. I was fortunate enough to walk through his office a couple of times in the 80's and 90's when he was with his team at East Cmpus on Saturday morning before a game and could see every wall of his office covered with X's and O's on how he was going to attack the the opposing defense that day. He was thorough beyond belief. Things don't happen by accident.

I saw Fidone lay a few hammers last year on running plays. Part of his problem this year is confidence as evidenced by his continued use of that knee brace which is hampering his mobilty to make cuts as most of this year his runs after catches have been straight lined without the twitch he had when he 1st got here. Now guys knees are better than before they tore their ACLs. In his case, I think it's a mental thing and trust in his knee. Some guys it takes a long time to get over that mental hurdle, while some guys they're back mentally quickly and others never make it back. He doesn't have the same twitch and speed he had before his torn ACL, I don't think he trusts his knee.

What a wonderful change hearing a coach speak honestly and say the truth. DH isn’t worried about coddling and hurting feelings. He has high expectations. Have to really like him for that. Why hadn’t Rhule said those things to the players? I really hope DH stays around. Rhule needs to hear the truth.

Rhule knows very well how Dana operates and knows he's hard nosed and doesn't hold back his punches as they've been good friends for a long time.

If you can’t do it yourself then bring someone else in that can. Rhule knows he can’t be as hard nosed and blunt so credit to him for bringing Dana in. Better late than never. But I did hear Dana say in January he was wanting to do this. I wonder if Rhule would have named him OC at that point had Dana been down with it.
