Wednesday notebook: At 0-6, coaches selling future in recruiting

***Offensive coordinator Troy Walters said “guys are mad” this week because they know how close they are to getting going, but yet they are still 0-6. He said the players showed on Monday wanting “this to be the week” they get their first win, and they’ve followed up with three straight really good practices.

***Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said it’s hard to say where Noah Vedral fits into the quarterback depth chart just because he’s taken so few reps with the varsity offense. The impression is that Andrew Bunch would still be the No. 2 quarterback right now, but Verduzco said Vedral was getting reps as the No. 2 and 3 quarterback this week.

***Walters said Stanley Morgan Jr. has “been awesome” despite not putting up nearly the numbers he probably had hoped coming into the year. Walters said Morgan has been “a true pro” all year and was one of the guys who really set the tone this week in practice.

***Walters was asked what the message was to recruits when a team was 0-6, and he said he asks them if they know much about the stock market. He said Nebraska’s stock might be low right now, so recruits should buy in now before it takes off in the very near future.

***Walters said he expects to take 3-4 or as many as five wide receivers in the 2019 class.

***Walters said Minnesota’s defensive front seven was just like every other Big Ten defense in that they were stout, physical, and made you earn everything on offense. He said the Gophers were a very disciplined team who “will make us beat them” with clean play and good execution.

***Offensive line coach Greg Austin said Brenden Jaimes was more comfortable than ever in Nebraska’s new offense, especially since switching to left tackle. Austin said Jaimes was “really hard on himself” after the Michigan game, and since then he’s been playing his best football.

***Austin said Nebraska’s current committed offensive line recruits were still “locked in” as Huskers and were learning a lot of their future this season. Austin said the recruits had been encouraged with the progress NU’s is making each week, and they can see for themselves how important playing clean football was to this system’s success.

***Tight end Austin Allen was not in pads following Wednesday's practice.
