We are #1 !!!

I'm not gonna lie, that is very concerning to me. Well coached teams don't lead the country in penalties. Interceptions continue to worry me as well. We've played two cupcakes out of 4 games so far, and we are ranked (if I am reading that correctly) 111th out of 127 teams, with 6. With all the screens we throw, I'd like to think that number should be a little lower. On the flip side, in looking at red zone offense, I was expecting much lower, it looks like we are #33. Not great, but not horrible.

Which of our coaches are not good and tell me, precisely, your reasoning.

As much as I loved the MR hire, it's getting pretty hard to defend Banker. I am aware there are key injuries and an overall lack of talent on that side of the ball, but in all honesty, and I admit I don't know that much about him, his defenses have always struggled haven't they? I think his hiring was the head scratcher for me, but we'll see what he can do with a healthier D and some more talent. I question if anyone would be getting that much more out of this defense and if you're being reasonable and objective, I think you'd have to agree.

We are also #1 in passing yards allowed. Granted, that stat has more schedule influence than penalties, but that is still awful.

This is a disgrace and embarrassment to the Nebraska tradition to be the worst team in the country in pass defense. Especially since defensive line and secondary was suppose to be the strength of the team. Let's face reality, the way you repair the worst defense in the country is to do what Texas a&m did this year. It's not pleasant, it's not cheap, but it is the only way to fix such a disaster.

You better show me ANY team in college football playing as many freshmen and walk ons at linebacker and DE that are having any better defensive success. We're screwed unless we can at some point get ALL of our scholarship linebackers back healthy. Starting THREE freshmen at linebacker and DE isn't a recipe for success. The penalties on offense are puzzling and the ones in in particular on our captain are disappointing. Guys need to get focused or sit. I'm at the point where I think if a guy gets a stupid penalty like that he needs to get yanked and watch for at least a series.

Why is his hiring a head scratcher? He came with Riley from OSU.

So what do you want Banker to do differently with the personnel Banker has to work with? Specifics please that he can do to solve the issues. We were going to struggle mightily with ONE linebacker or DE injury let alone FOUR. You CAN'T play 3 or 4 freshem at linebacker and DE along with walk ons and expect to be successful on defense. It just DOES NOT HAPPEN. This isn't on Banker.

Not a lot of substantive answers coming your way.

tighter press coverage, drive their receivers off their routes, disrupt their timing, more aggressive play from the secondary.

That's going to open us up to some other things but I agree that I would at least try it. It would probably lead to more over the top long TDs.

I cannot tell if you are bitching or just talking to me in all honesty. IDK what to do to fix it, you will never see me give X's & O's advice on this board, ever, but I know a broken defense when I see it. I also said "I'm not sure anyone could get much more out of what we have", so I wasn't tossing Banker under the bus.

Honestly though, our defense sucks, and Banker is the D cord. Soooo, it seems logical to wonder if at least part of the problem is on him?

I really don't think Banker is as big of a problem as the whiners on here make him out to be. At some point you have to objectively look at what he has to work with and realize that our talent isn't where it needs to be. NOBODY IMO would be able to deal with the injuries and lack of depth we have at backer and DE and make no mistake its having a huge impact on our secondary. We need to quit the blame game. We're way short on Jimmies and Joes.

I'd like to see this as well. We're already getting torched deep with no safety help. Instead of lining up 5-7 yards off the receiver, make the dbs get in their face and disrupt the timing. Will help with pressure on the QB too. I see no reason not to do it at this point. Maybe that is not a smaller db's strength, like Kalu. Put him in the slot maybe with some lb or safety help. But Rose should excell with more aggressive db play.

Wrt half the interceptions they were off deflections and not Tommys fault

He may be-and I am saying this in all seriousness-trying to build a D that won't get it's butt kicked by Wisconsin and Minnesota. Because that would be embarrassing to SE.

It is possible to build a D without being dead last in pass D. It is one thing to get embarassed on ocassion like Bo did (couple times a year his last couple years), but last year Bo gave up over 500 yards once (twice if you count USC) Banker has done it twice already and almost three times and we havent even played the best qb we will play all year. I could honestly see Connor Cook coming close to the NCAA record (716) against us (I think itll be closer to 600 passing yards, but could see him breaking the record). I dont hate this entire staff...just the D because all we heard all offseason was talk how this scheme was much better and the players could play downhill...yet to see it

And you expect what after 4 games switching from a match up zone????????

Embarrassed on occasion? We are 2-2 and lost on a last play of the game hail mary, and in OT. I'm far from as f-ing embarrassed as I was after losing to Minny twice, getting drilled 3 of 4 vs Wisky, needing AA to bail out out against McNeese State, barely holding on against Wyoming (who went 5-7), blowing a lead and getting bitch slapped by UCLA at home, needing a hail mary to beat NW at home, losing another one to NW at home when they ran like 18 straight times, beating South Dakota State 17-3 thanks to clipping calls, etc, etc.

Some of you are looking for reasons to be embarrassed, because you decided from day one Banker sucked, and now that he is here with a depleted roster BEFORE the injuries, you want to prove yourself right.

I expect to see improvement. Haven't really seen it and I'm not the only one.

I think some people see us losing to Minnesota for a 3rd time and getting drilled by Wisky yet again, out played by NW and killed by MSU and are sounding the alarm.

I'd expect it too, had we had a consistent starting line up on D. We have not yet! DUH! Have you not been paying attention???? Or do you always bitch just to bitch?

I guess I don't consider raising valid points bitching "just to bitch." And while I do think the things you bring up are valid I don't think it adds up to us having the worst defense in the country while playing some not so great teams.

I pointed out why you point is not valid, it's bitching, without merit.

109TH IN TOTAL DEFENSE IS NOT LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO BE EMBARASSED

Consistent or not...we have enough talent to be better than dead last in pass d and 109th in total d...try telling me indiana, texas state, rutgers, kanas, etc have more talent

And do you really think those teams mentioned would beat Nebraska?

And a lot of our talent hasn't been able to play all 4 games. Who have all this teams played????
If we are still dead last after everyone's season is over then you can bitch.

Trying to have a conversation with you is like talking to the regular bar drunk. You've got dead last in your head and you can't get past it. Facts, circumstances, roster. Injuries are immaterial to you.

I'm one of the people who tried telling people like you we'd struggle all year long. You can not deal with reality for some reason.

So your inability to accept facts means yes you are nothing more than looking for a reason to bitch to make yourself feel better.

No I understand we have injuries that cut us thin...for that and the transition year I would understand 70th or 80th in total D...but this is a tad extreme...Are any of the teams weve played top 15 in total offense? Honest question because Idk, but Miami struggled against FAU and then torched us, BYU I will give you is decent offensively...Southern Miss is decent against other non P5 opponents...not 457 good with 445 through the air...and what about South Bama? What is the excuse there? They even had success against us throwing the ball...I would give Banker a pass with 70th or 80th...not 109th...look up the last time we were ranked that low...I bet his initials are KC

I can't believe anyone is arguing against what @Tulsa Tom posted. Or that others brought up how bad our pass defense is through four games. Yes, it sucks and yes it's negative but one thing is for sure - it's an indisputable fact both are terrible and have to improve, and improve fast, for this team to have any type of success. I can't recall a team, maybe Baylor (?), that had a high number of either and ended up highly successful. Baylor is an exception based on the "highly prolific" offense they run.

@Archie Graham is correct with his other thread too. The run defense has been better, not sure how long that'll last come conference play without Rose, Banderas and Valentine. Might as well throw Gangwish in here too, hurts forcing others to play more snaps.

2014 through 4 games (opponents)
126 rushes - 467 yards - 3.70 ypc
31.5 rushes per game - 116.75 yards per game - 3.70 ypc per game
Side note: McNeese State had 45 rushes (36% of opponents totals happened in one game), keep that in mind

2015 through 4 games (opponents)
106 rushes - 294 yards - 2.8 ypc
26.5 rushes per game - 73.5 yards per game - 2.8 ypc per game
Side note: BYU & Miami combined for just over 50% of rushes

@suhnami you want to talk recent football, here you go, step up....

That post is beautiful @HuskerTimOmaha . I love it. And not once did you say that other guy's name.

Multiple people have pointed out that the other teams probably aren't running as much because the passing is so easy against us. And I think we might see that USM and USA aren't really strong rushing teams going forward.
