it's fascinating to review ucf's 2017 season (it's all on youtube) in chronological order. you can see their confidence grow.
ucf-navy game:
1. navy shows how the traditional option game can be hard to stop. and while scott's 21st century version has similar principals (option to handoff straight up the middle, followed by a couple wide options), what makes their offense go is his creative playcalling.
2. ucf had some mistake erasers. scott/nu needs an ahman green or grant wistrom or two to emerge this fall to do the same. who has world class acceleration like killins? is fearless like hughes? heat-seeking like jasinski? has "ucf speed" (killins' phrase)?
3. vedral played one snap and fumbled. neal showed some nice leadership when milton threw a pick, but most of the time seemed easily blocked, and showed average toughness and speed...well, at least they'll know the terminology.
ucf didn't play its best but gritted out a tough win. that starts with the coaches.
interestingly, maryland qb max bortenschlager started against nu in 2016, and against ucf in 2017. the result:
vs chinander: 15-26 132 yds, 1 td, 2 int, with ucf winning 38-10
vs banker: 14-29 191 yds, 1 td, 0 int, with nu winning 28-7
well, on to the next ucf game...
