A decent night last night for the Big, but the Minnesota loss was disappointing. As we enter Elite 8 action, many of the usual suspects are involved.
Big – 3 Teams – Penn State (1), Nebraska (5) and Michigan State
Pac 12 – 2 Teams – Stanford (3) and Southern Cal (10)
SEC – 2 Teams – Florida (2) and Kentucky (4)
Big XII – 1 Team – Texas
Since 2011, when Nebraska joined the Big Ten, the conference leads in Elite 8 Teams with the Pac 12 in second. Big has 20 teams, Pac 12 has 16, Big XII has 9 and the SEC has 6 teams. The Big XII results basically reflect Texas who has made it every year (7) and the SEC is primarily driven by Florida (4).
At this point in the tournament, the name Elite 8 is appropriate as the volleyball elites dominate. Only ten teams have made the Elite 8 more than once since 2011 and all but two are from the Big or Pac 12.
Texas – 7
Nebraska – 6
Stanford – 5
Southern Cal – 5
Florida – 4
Penn State – 4
Washington – 3
Wisconsin – 3
Minnesota – 3
UCLA - 2
Only five teams have made the Final Four more than once, and all but Minnesota have a chance to add to their tally.
Texas – 5
Penn State – 3
Stanford – 2
Nebraska – 2
Minnesota – 2
Obviously we are hoping for three more wins. I for one would love the see them include Penn State (semis) and Texas (finals). Go Big Red!
