Put it in the W column.
You could have copied and pasted this post for the first seven games of the year. I'm one of the biggest sunshine pumpers, but I have yet to see this team sustain any high level of execution for one game yet. But 7-0 was a stretch goal before the year started and here we are.
Northwestern.Very true- happy for the win but anyone can see the cracks in the foundation. Nothing wrong with verbalizing the obvious- it did shock me that their have been three blocked punts.
Question- does any team we've played have a winning record besides Wyoming (4-2)? If so playing 6 teams with sub .500 records is concerning given the style of their play.
But the schedule will be better than Iowas last year after next week already. We have be become modern day Io_ a.
But I love being 7-0.
About the blocked punts, it seems like people sometimes forget we have a TRUE freshman punting, who was recruited thinking, and spent most of the summer thinking, that he was going to redshirt, sitting on the sidelines watching a senior All-American candidate, Big Ten Punter of The Year, possible NFL prospect, booming punts. He was thrust into a role he didn't think he was going to have to take over, nearly at the last minute.Very true- happy for the win but anyone can see the cracks in the foundation. The first one came in the first game of the season, on only his second punt of the game, after a pretty mediocre punt in his first attempt. In that one, it looked like he simply took too long to kick it, probably trying to get more on it, and it gave time for it to be blocked. Second one against Indiana, he was punting from very deep, which he hadn't done many times, and nerves probably got to him.
This one against Purdue almost needs an asterisk next to it. He was clearly going for a rugby style punt, and it wasn't so much blocked as it happened to touch a Purdue player on the helmet, and it made very little difference, as the punt still essentially did what it was supposed to do.
I agree that we shouldn't belittle what this team is accomplishing and being 7-0 is important. As I said in another thread beating the teams you are supposed to beat week in and week out is task 1 in becoming a championship team and that is easier said than done, much more important than a win over a top team here or there.Heck yes. This team isn't 95 Nebraska, we aren't going to blow people out. We haven't had that kind of recruiting or player development for a long time. But we are maximizing our potential and finding a way to win. No reason to apologize or belittle what this team is accomplishing.
Read is putting our punt team in a position to fail. Line up in the traditional set and punt the damn thing. We are getting too cute. After listening to Riley's press conference it sounds as though he's pissed off about the punt mishaps and I wouldn't be surprised to see some drastic changes.About the blocked punts, it seems like people sometimes forget we have a TRUE freshman punting, who was recruited thinking, and spent most of the summer thinking, that he was going to redshirt, sitting on the sidelines watching a senior All-American candidate, Big Ten Punter of The Year, possible NFL prospect, booming punts. But let's not pretend we are maximizing our potential, and if you want to argue with me just remember that mike Riley is on my side on this. He doesn't think we're maximizing our potential, either.
