UCLA inks record apparel deal with Under Armour

We have to be the last major football program wearing Adidas. Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee, Wisconsin, UCLA have all jumped ship in the couple years. Will be interesting to see if Under Armour makes an offer to us next year.

"The University of Nebraska Board of Regents Friday voted 7-0 to extend the Husker athletic department's relationship with athletic apparel outfitter Adidas. The new deal — five years, $15.53 million, with $8.03 million in cash and $7.5 million in apparel and equipment — isn't worth much more than NU's previous eight-year, $22.7 million deal that was set to expire this summer.

“It's not a significant increase over the deal we had before, so in that sense, I'm disappointed,” UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman said. “But I'm also led to believe that these agreements aren't as rich as they have been across the country.

Like Michigan's eight-year, $66.5 million deal, signed with Adidas in 2007. Or Notre Dame's 10-year, $60 million deal, signed with Adidas in 2005. Those remain the high-water marks."

It looks like everyone else got a big jump.. I'm glad someone else will be negotiating the next contract and not Harvey, because those were pitiful numbers even 3 years ago.

Maybe our strategy is to wait until we're the only one left at Addidas, so we can put the squeeze on them to retain us then.

Kidding. Sort of...

Not even close to the only major program. Miami just signed a big deal with Adidas, Texas A&M did too, and also Arizona State. Louisville and Kansas also are Adidas teams to name a few others. I'm sure there are others, don't feel like looking them up right now. I personally don't mind Adidas, wouldn't mind Under Armour, don't want Nike.

Adidas used to be light years behind Nike and even UA in designs and appeal, but now they are starting to make a comeback. Recruits and younger kids are starting to wear more and more Adidas gear. I personally hope we get a huge Adidas deal when our contract is up, because I'm not a fan of Under Armour and I don't see us becoming a Nike school.

Under Armour has locked up the best basketball player (or at least most popular) in Steph Curry, the best baseball player in Bryce Harper, the most marketable football player in Cam Newton and the best golfer in Jordan Spieth. Now they are going after college football teams.

If you are a prospective investor, this is either the time to get into this company as they seem to be doing everything Nike did when they got huge, or it's time to short them because they are invested to the hilt in these player relationships.

I land on the side of investing in them. The younger generation has much more allegiance to Under Armour than to Nike (in my opinion) and that will pay off in the next 10 years or more.

TBH, I really don't care what apparel maker NU athletics sign a contract with. I think it's silly to think that such things improve your performance. I say that NU Athletics should sign a contract with the company that offers them the best deal. Who gives a rip who other schools sign with? Until we are a national brand again I don't see us having the value of Notre Dame, let alone anyone at the top of that list. And no, signing with Nike/Under Armour will not put us over the top. We won five national championships without them. Oregon has exactly ZERO championships despite a different uniform for every game and all the big money from Phil Knight.

Like it or not, the money matters. This source of revenue wasn't a material factor when we won our championships. I want our share. The program is worth more than the current contract reflects.

Like I said, sign with whoever offers us the best deal. Outside of that, I don't see it matters who that apparel maker is.

I'm pretty terrible at math, but am I reading this correctly that UCLA will be making more in 1 year of their contract through Under Armour than Nebraska will be in 5 total years while with Adidas? If so, good job Adidas.

I can see UA or nike ponying up a ton of cash knowing full well Nebraska fans will go out and buy the new gear like crazy. I already have a couple nike Nebraska t-shirts and nike Nebraska hoodie so its already available. And like it or not it matters to some kids what gear they get for free.

Does anyone have any information on whether or not Nike or UA has already come after NU, and we just stayed with Adidas?

Our product on the field is most important, b/c if NU's most recent titles weren't 20 ish years ago both Nike an UA would be after us like crazy.

I work in corporate apparel sales, and the grip that UA has on the younger demographic is strong and only growing. For that purpose alone it may be wise to make a jump if we had the option.

Love Under Armour. Anything that takes Nike down a couple of notches is a good thing.
